Three sections of the Historic ColumbiaRiver Highway State Trail are now open, with additional sections under construction. This is a separated, multi-use trail. Bicycliststraveling eastbound on I-84 are encouragedto exit at exit 40 and use the trail betweenTanner Creek and Eagle Creek, to avoid thenarrow Toothrock Tunnel on I-84. A stairwaylocated at Eagle Creek provides a groove tofacilitate pushing your bike up or down. A secondsection of the State Trail is open between EagleCreek and Cascade Locks. This leads you directlyinto the city of Cascade Locks, where you can followthe original HCRH alignment along Wa-Na-Pa Streetand Forest Lane (pg. 9). A third section, between HoodRiver and Mosier, includes the Mosier Twin Tunnels.

The Historic Columbia River Highway wasconstructed between 1913 and 1922 and is thefirst scenic highway in the country. It is nowrecognized as an All-American Road, NationalScenic Byway, National Historic Civil EngineeringLandmark, and a National Historic Landmark.

On certain sections (between Troutdale andDodson and between Mosier and The Dalles)bicyclists share the roadway with motor vehicles.Shoulder widths vary from zero to five feet.Traffic volumes are generally light, with theheaviest traffic along the Sandy River to Corbettsection. Grades are moderate. Other portions areclosed to motor vehicles.

This route takes you to six waterfalls, includingMultnomah Falls, the most visited natural site in Oregon. It also takes you to magnificent viewpoints overlookingthe Gorge, including Portland Women’s Forum ScenicViewpoint, Vista House at Crown Point and Rowena Crest. The majority of visitors begin at the city of Troutdale and traveleast on the HCRH. Follow the keystone signs along the HCRH.

Interstate 84 is built to freewaystandards. It is basically flat and hasa wide, eight to ten foot pavedshoulder, except at most bridgelocations. The Toothrock Tunnel islocated at approximately milepost 41eastbound; bicyclists should avoid

this tunnel by using the adjacent HCRHState Trail, accessed at exit 40; volumes

are high, with large numbers of trucks.

While bicycling in the Gorge, youwill have the choice of three differentroutes to view the spectacular scenerythe Gorge offers: 1) the HistoricColumbia River Highway (HCRH) inOregon, 2) State Route 14 (SR-14)in Washington and 3) Interstate84 (I-84) in Oregon. Each willprovide a different experience andtake you to different destinations.

State Route 14 is a majoreast-west highway in southernWashington, providing for boththrough trips and local access. It isoften two lanes with limited or noshoulders. Seven tunnels are locatedin the middle section of the route.Traffic volumes are moderate;however, many trucks use this route.

WEATHERWeather in the Columbia Gorge varies tremendously from west to east. Rain is

most prevalent at the crest of the Cascade Mountains, just west of Cascade Locks. Iceand snow are common throughout the Gorge in January and February, occasionallyresulting in road closures. Spring rains are common. Summer temperatures east ofthe Cascades often reach over 100 ˚F (38˚C). Be sure to carry sufficient water - publicdrinking fountains are scarce, particularly in the east. During the fall, wet leaves onHCRH pavement can present slippery travel conditions. The Columbia River Gorge

concentrates prevailing winds which blow east in the winter and west in the summer. While these winds help make the Gorge the windsurfing capital of the world, bicyclistsshould check weather forecasts and try to avoid the most windy periods.
