  • Welcome!

No matter the season, Columbia County is filled wi

    th lots of

fun waiting to be discovered and all just a short

    drive away.

Find fun with 11,000 acres of lakes, 16,000 acres of

    public hunting

and wildlife land, 49 miles of trout streams, 27 boat

    landings and

3,000 campsites. The area is rich in Native-Americ

    an history,

and proudly showcases attractions of the early set

    tlers and

explorers, and the role they all shared in shaping t

    he area as we

see it today. A visit to the local Amish communities

    and their

businesses will help connect the past to the presen

    t, as well.

Wonderful drives, such as Scenic Byway 60 or High

    way 51,

will bring you within minutes of scenic landscapes

    featuring

beautiful barn quilts, the National Scenic Ice Age T

    rail,

Wisconsin Dells, Lake Wisconsin, and the Merrimac

    Ferry.

Combine all of that with comfortable lodging, fanta

    stic restaurants

and friendly people and youll understand why Col

    umbia County

is another Wisconsin destination waiting to be exp

    lored.

Use this guide as your first step in planning a geta

    way to

Columbia County. More resources and travel infor

    mation are also

    available on www.TravelWisconsin.com or downloa

    d our Travel

Portage Arts & Cultureunique cultural experiencesThe Portage Center for the Arts is dedicated to the cultural growth and enhancement of those living in Portage and the surrounding area, by providing a community venue for the arts. The center hosts a variety of theatrical events and art exhibits including the Performing Arts Series, the Zona Gale Young Peoples Theatre and the Gale Singers. Additionally, the Drury Gallery hosts free monthly art exhibits from September through May, showcasing local and nationally recognized artists.

The Portage Community Theatre Group is a group of community members dedicated to bringing theatrical performances to our community. Theatrical projects take place at many times throughout the year while helping to enhance the quality of life of residents. This group is working to make sure that everyone is sure to be touched by the performing arts.

The Portage Community School District also supports the arts by offering theatrical and musical performances. In addition, you will find a seven-screen movie theater (Portage Theatre) in the heart of our downtown showcasing many movies in Dolby Digital 3-D along with the areas sharpest, brightest picture and best in digital surround sound.

The Portage Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Historic Portage. Portage is a wonderful place to grow your business, raise your family or just visit. The area offers small town charm with residential neighborhoods and growing commercial and industrial business sites, next to the beautiful Wisconsin and Fox Rivers. Our strong historical heritage offers an excellent environment in which to live and work. We are certainly eager to share this rich history with all who pass through.

The historical distinction of Portage lies in its unique geographical location between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Here, the two rivers, one flowing north to the St. Lawrence, the other south to the Mississippi, are separated by a narrow neck of land over which, for two centuries, adventurers and settlers traveling the waterway had to portage their canoes and heavy packs from one stream to another. The settlement, which grew here because of the resulting traffic, was first known as Wau-wau-onah, Winnebago for carry on the shoulder. During the French occupation, it was simply le portage (from porter: to carry). This was eventually Anglicized to Portage.

Today, Portage boasts many outdoor recreational resources, wonderful homes, excellent schools and well established industries that provide solid employment opportunities. Both residents and visitors can relax and unwind in one of Portages many parks, take in the areas beautiful scenery along the rivers or visit any of our seven historic attractions.

Our historic downtown contributes to the history coming alive in Portage. You will find a variety of quaint niche stores, restaurants and specialty shops all located next to our

Historical Portagebeautiful Portage Canal and levee walking path. Complimenting the downtown are many other dining establishments, specialty stores, entertainment venues and a variety of larger national retail chains located in the community.

You are sure to find some entertainment options by taking in a movie at our seven-screen Theatre or stopping in for an art show or play production at our Portage Center for the Arts. Keeping yourself active will be easy by taking in a game of golf at one of our local courses or during the winter months you can take part in curling at our local club or skiing at Cascade Mountain.

Whether you are interested in visiting our community or you are looking to relocate and make Portage your home, we hope you explore and discover all that we have to offer.
