Since its incorporation in 1799, Ashe County has represented the best of what northwestern North Carolina has to offer. located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, our County experiences four distinct and beautiful seasons that encourage a strong tourism sector as people from across the state and nation come to experience the beauty of the mountains and the hospitality of our people. An Ashe County fall offers a patchwork of splendid autumn colors; our winters are picturesque, touched with pristine snowfalls offering a variety of winter activities. Spring offers the beauty of the dogwood and redbud trees and summer offers many recreational opportunities via the mountains and the majestic New River, the oldest river in North America and the first to be designated as an American Heritage River. With Ashe County offering several entrances to the Blue Ridge Parkway, scenic drives, hiking, and biking are a natural part of our region’s offerings.

Ashe County is known for many things including a thriving Christmas Tree Industry that has furnished several trees for the White House and a Choose and Cut season offering an opportunity for families to come and enjoy the mountains and return home with one of our beautiful Christmas trees. GleNdAle SPriNGS. Nestled between the South Fork of the New River and the Blue Ridge Parkway can be found the quaint community of Glendale Springs. It is more than a highlight of visitor trips to Ashe County; it is a place of tranquil enchantment to those who choose to linger in the solitude of its Holy Trinity Church, one of two Churches of the Frescoes within Ashe County. lending a religious aura to the community is an artistic treasure: Ben long’s “last Supper” fresco. This life-sized depiction is permanently enshrined in The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Glendale Springs: visit, shop, canoe the New River, and dine in luxurious surroundings. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and be renewed for a lifetime.

JefferSON. The Town of Jefferson, our county seat, established in 1800 and chartered in 1803, is one of the oldest towns in Western North Carolina. Jefferson is home to the 1904 Courthouse which was replaced with a modern facility in 2001. The vacated 1904 courthouse has been renovated to provide space for a visitors center, a museum and other appropriate entities to reveal the culture and history of Jefferson and Ashe County in earlier times. Also enjoy Foster-Tyson Park and several local restaurants.

lANSiNG. The lansing municipality, located in the mountainous northwestern section of the county, is rich with memories and history. The first post office for the unincorporated community of lansing was established in 1882. It served a primarily rural community made up of a village and outlying farms until the railroad came in 1914. The arrival of the Norfolk and Western Railroad triggered a boom, which culminated in the town’s being chartered and incorporated in 1928. An iron mine operated for a few years, shipping ore. When lansing was just beginning to grow into a prosperous town, a fire almost destroyed it. It began early on a morning in the 1930’s. A community bucket brigade was able to save part of the town. After a second major fire in the 1940s, the community started a fire department. Today there are many interesting things to do in lansing, including the ola Belle Reed Festival in August, the Greater lA Festival held each September and the Haunted old lansing School in october.

TOdd. Mountain music and historic stores are an important part of Todd’s heritage and culture. Todd features the Todd Island Park and the Walter and Annie Cook Memorial Park. Shop at the Todd General Store, the Todd Mercantile & other shops, ride a bike along Railroad Grade Road, listen to the music or visit one of Todd’s festivals, such as the New River Festival held in october.

WeST JefferSON. West Jefferson’s downtown area features more than a dozen galleries, craft shops, and restaurants. The town hosts numerous murals that provide a “walking tour.” The murals are the works of local artists and others in North Carolina that depict the area’s history and unique character. The other Church of the Frescoes resides in West Jefferson: St. Mary’s Episcopal Church hosts three Ben long frescoes. Christmas In July is our annual Independence Day weekend celebration. The downtown festival, which draws more than 20,000 visitors, has its roots in the local Christmas tree industry.

eCONOMY & iNdUSTrYTraditionally an agriculture and textile economy, the industrial make-up of Ashe County is changing. Today, industry is dominated by advanced materials manufacturing, construction, electronics and automotive industries. While our economy continues to recover from the recession, our major industries have remained strong. GE Aviation, American Emergency Vehicles, leviton, Northwestern Vehicles, Southeastern Specialty Vehicles and United ChemiCon offer diversification in our industrial economy. The Gates Corporation made a major expansion this year, locating a sister-facility from VA after their facility was destroyed by a tornado. Dr. Pepper bottling also expanded their shipping and receiving operations into one of our empty industrial buildings. other major businesses include Ashe County Cheese, Elk Creek International, McFarland Publishing, and Screen Specialty.

Agriculture continues to be a vital industry. The thriving Christmas tree industry makes Ashe County the largest producer in North Carolina. Ashe has furnished the White House Blue Room Christmas tree several times in the past few years.

The tourism industry has increased over the past few years and is now estimated to be an approximate $40.3 million dollar industry. The thriving arts community with galleries, antique shops and the Florence Thomas Art School brings visitors from across the state and beyond. The recent enhancements to downtown West Jefferson and the opening of the Virginia Creeper Museum in the 1904 Courthouse in Jefferson are attractive and interesting additions to our economy. With the Blue Ridge Parkway, the beautiful mountain scenery, New River and Mt. Jefferson State Parks, and the historic New River as major draws, tourism will continue as one of our major industries.

TrANSPOrTATiON

Four major highways offer Ashe County accessibility to major interstates and arteries. US 421, US 221, NC 16 and NC 88 are the major thoroughfares. Additionally, seven freight lines are available. Ashe County also has an excellent local airport featuring a 4,300-foot paved and lighted runway. Several commercial airports are located in the area, including one within 65 miles.

edUCATiONAshe County has a small but progressive school system with 3,200 students enrolled in its three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Five preschool classes serve 88 three and four year olds. Schools are housed in modern facilities, the newest of which opened in 2004.

Ashe County has a tradition of academic excellence, consistently scoring well on the NC State Assessments. During the 2011-2012 school year, four out of five schools were designated as Schools of Distinction as defined by the State ABC standards. out of 241 classroom teachers, our elementary schools have 43% with advanced degrees, the middle school has 52% and the high school has 51%. our school system has 43 teachers with national board certification.

Technology plays a vital role in Ashe County Schools. All classrooms have internet access and teachers integrate technologies in the classroom with traditional instruction. The use of SMART Boards, iPads, iPods, laptop carts, digital projectors, document cameras and web-based instruction are all regular educational experiences. At the high school level, students have the option to take on-line courses through the NC Virtual Public School.

High school students have the opportunity to enroll in courses that provide instruction geared toward their post graduate goals. Students may choose to enroll in Advanced Placement, Career and Technical education and community college courses.

Ashe County students are provided opportunities to participate in both visual and performing arts. At the high school level, students may choose to extend their study to piano, guitar, banjo, choral music or band. Visual arts classes are offered at all grade levels.

Collaboration is essential to the success of each school. Partnerships with the Ashe Campus of Wilkes Community College, Appalachian State University, Ashe County 4-H and other local agencies, businesses and the faith community are a valued part of educational programming.

Academic excellence strong cultural arts programs and a focus on technology create an outstanding school system in Ashe County.

Ashe County Schools just completed a comprehensive 3-year strategic plan to guide and direct the work of our educators through the 2014 school years. The development of this plan was a collaborative effort with 80+ community members taking part. The Arts Are AliveArt has provided the link between the past and the future of Ashe County. Formed in 1978, the Ashe County Arts Council has played a vital role in the preservation of traditional arts and crafts and in the development of the thriving West Jefferson Arts District. located in downtown West Jefferson, the building in which the Arts Council is housed is itself a destination. Built in 1938 as a WPA project, it is a beautiful stone structure befitting its purpose. A wide variety of talent is regularly displayed within its walls where pottery, fine art, photography, jewelry and much more can be viewed and purchased.

The result of 30 years of dedication to the arts cannot be contained within the walls of one building, albeit a marvelous one. The buildings of downtown West Jefferson are themselves a palette upon which local artists share the history and heritage of the County. A mural of the Virginia Creeper Train, which connected Ashe County to the rest of the world during a time when transportation was limited, is among the many murals. Fifteen murals adorn the historic buildings throughout downtown depicting the musical heritage, colorful landscape and diverse culture of the region. A walk through town is, in itself, a visual delight.

The numerous galleries dotting the streets of West Jefferson are filled with objects d’art to delight the serious collector as well as the casual viewer. on the second Friday of each month during summer and early fall, a festive atmosphere fills the streets as the galleries open their doors to the sidewalks and host the monthly gallery crawl. The artists mingle with crawlers, share their vision and graciously provide tempting treats as well as musicians throughout the town.

A visit to a small country church is a delight in itself but the experience is enhanced when that church also houses world famous frescoes. Glendale Springs and West Jefferson are the locations of the Churches of the Frescoes. Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s are home to the first of Ben long’s fresco work in the United States. The beauty of this art is truly enhanced by the sanctity of the settings.

Ashe County is also home to a thriving little Theater group. Planning your visit to take in one of the four shows produced each year is well worth the effort. Experience the talents of the year-round and seasonal residents while enjoying the comfort of the 300-seat Ashe Civic Center Auditorium.

A relaxing drive through the country can turn into a treasure hunt as you seek to locate the Barn Quilts that adorn barns throughout the county. The Barn Quilt Trail combines the heritage of agriculture with traditional quilt patterns to extend the downtown murals project into the rural parts of our county. A map can be obtained at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson.

And while you are driving, visit Florence, a new school for the arts in Glendale Springs. over three dozen classes in the visual arts and master crafts are offered each year in the beautiful pastoral setting adjoining the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Whether strolling through the Arts District or seeking out the many public art displays, a visit to Ashe County is a visual delight enhanced by the natural beauty of the region. Where better to view the creativity of man, than the gallery of nature.

Ashe County is very proud of its musical heritage. The traditional mountain music was born of the melding of the Scots, Irish, and English, the primary settlers of the region in the 1700’s. This musical heritage is celebrated and honored in many ways. Ashe County is host to the Junior Appalachian Musicians Project (JAM), a significant Arts Council-sponsored program that impacts Ashe County’s young people. JAM focuses on the traditional musical roots and the preservation of the musical heritage by teaching the next generation to play guitar, fiddle, and banjo. What better way to preserve the past than to pass the traditions along to the future?

local music venues invite visitors to bring their instruments and experience the true culture of the music at one of the many local jam sessions held throughout the county, such Phipps Country Store and Todd General Store. You can sit and enjoy or join right in!

Merlefest takes place in neighboring Wilkes County, where, every spring, the musical talents of the Grammy-winning composer and performer Doc Watson are showcased. Doc is one of many who perform at Merlefest during a three-day celebration named after the late Merle Watson, Doc’s only son. Musicians from all over the world arrive to celebrate traditional bluegrass music.

Enjoy the concert series held monthly in the summer months. The West Jefferson Community Partnership sponsors concerts in the BackStreet Park in Downtown West Jefferson.

You’ll enjoy some of the regions best Celtic musicians at the New River Celtic Music Festival at River House Inn. Bring a chair and a blanket and join us!

The Christmas in July street festival is held in West Jefferson every year. Featuring local musicians, dance performers, and vendors in a street fair atmosphere the event also includes a juried exhibit of local art and craft.

The Rotary Club of the Jeffersons sponsors the Ashe County Bluegrass and old Time Fiddlers Convention every summer and is another opportunity to experience old time music.

The life of ola Belle Reed, known as the mother of bluegrass, is celebrated during the ola Belle Reed Festival in August. Held in lansing, the festival brings together musicians from all over the country to celebrate her significant contribution to bluegrass music.

The New River Blues Festival takes place every year on the banks of the historic New River. Blues at its best!

THE HISToRY of Ashe County

The lands that now make up Ashe County were first used during the Paleo-Indian period of 12,000 BC to 8000 BC. It appears likely there were temporary camps on the uplands used by hunter-gatherers, whose permanent camps were located in eastern Tennessee. Woodland period (500 BC to 1000 AC) sites are found as well, suggesting the valley was an important food-gathering route through the mountains.

Because of Ashe County’s remoteness, it is often referred to as the “lost Province” and until 1725 there was little established colonization. It was the westward movement in the colonies that brought settlers. The Celtic people who traveled here were drawn by the promise of land and opportunity. Though not of the landed class, they were educated and had a history of a lifestyle uniquely suited to the mountains. These very independent immigrants were beyond the regulation of colonial governments and could build herds with a minimum of land. An abundance of wild game and fish, along with crop cultivation, helped them to survive the harsh winters and thrive.

In 1828, Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for whom Mount Mitchell was named, visited Ashe County. From his vantage point atop Mt. Jefferson he exclaimed:

“Nearly the whole county of Ashe lay at our feet, the merrymanders of the river can be traced as on a map. Some of the plantation in view also presented a noble appearance, but oh, what an ocean of mountains!”

Dr. Mitchell’s description still has meaning for the Ashe County of today. The county is organized by its geography of mountains and winding routes of the New River and its many tributaries. Even today the county is rural with the modest farm complex from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century being the most numerous property type. Decentralized communities served these farms with general stores, post offices, schools and churches. Many examples of each of these buildings can still be found in the county.

The Museum of Ashe County History, located in the historic and newly renovated 1904 courthouse, displays many artifacts and treasures, providing insight into the county and the people who settled the area.

The New River is formed in Ashe County by the confluence of the South Fork New River and the North Fork New River and is one of only 14 American Heritage Rivers in the United States. Flowing 320 miles north through southwestern Virginia and into West Virginia, a trip up the New River provides beautifully scenic pastoral vistas so breathtaking that in 1998, a 26.5-mile section of the New River in Ashe County was designated a National Scenic River.

Formed prior to the uplifting of the Appalachian Mountains, the New River is second only to the Nile as the oldest river in the world. Because of shallow, gentle waters, the New River is ideal for canoeing, kayaking and tubing, while the opportunity for occasional minor rapids adds just a bit of excitement to the trip. Higher water levels occur during May and June. August and September are low-flow periods. Canoes, kayaks and tubes may be rented through local outfitters. Public launch areas are located in the New River State Park, where you can also enjoy picnic areas, hiking trails, primitive camp sites, fishing and educational programs.

The New River is also recognized as prime for sport fishing. Smallmouth and redeye bass traverse the waters and trout fishing is excellent in the smaller, faster tributaries, most designated general trout waters and stocked regularly with rainbow and brown trout. Anglers need a state fishing license in order to fish these waters. A license can be obtained online at www.ncwildlife.org.

... and BY WAYS The Blue ridge Parkway is one of the most impressive national parks in the nation. Referred to as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the 469-mile parkway, which winds through the high mountains of the southern Appalachians and joins Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks, has since after World War II been the most visited site in the National Park System. It was built over a 52-year period from the turning of the first shovelful of dirt in September of 1935 until its completion in 1987. For more than 30 miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway traverses the ridges


of Ashe County, showcasing spectacular long-range views, picturesque log cabins and truly breathtaking pastoral settings.

Barn Quilt Tour. The Ashe County Arts Council has brought together members of the community to design, paint and mount quilt block paintings on barns throughout the County. The treasure hunt begins with the help of a brochure pinpointing the locations of each barn quilt. Stop by the Arts Council in West Jefferson for a brochure or visit the Arts Council web site at www.AsheCountyArts.org.

Virginia Creeper Trail. For a one-day outing, consider the short drive from Ashe County to Damascus, VA for a 17-mile bicycle ride—all down hill! The Virginia Creeper Bicycle trail is considered one of the most spectacular bicycle trails in the world. A shuttle will take you to the top of White Top Mountain where the gentle ride down the mountain begins. Created on the existing rail bed of the old Virginia Creeper train, the trail leads over original train trestles, through the woods and over flowing mountain streams. You can spend the day on the Creeper Trail and be back in Ashe County in time for dinner!

The first settlers to Ashe County, mostly of English, Scottish and Irish descent, came looking for land suitable for farming in 1770. They were attracted by the natural “grassy balds” covered with bluegrass and by the large stands of chestnut, black walnut, hickory, maple and pine trees. The hilly, mountainous terrain yielded an abundance of wheat, rye, oats, barley, buckwheat and vegetables and offered land for pastures on which great numbers of cattle were raised. Today, agriculture continues as a significant contributor to the local economy.

Since the early 1960s, the production of Christmas trees and holiday greenery has become the largest single agricultural enterprise in the county. With over 700 local growers, Ashe County is recognized as the largest producer of Christmas trees east of the Mississippi. Members of the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association have been honored to provide the official White House Christmas tree more often than any other county in the state – 8 times since 1973!

The soil and weather conditions in Ashe County are very well-suited to grape production and have spawned several vineyards. organic crops have also found a niche in the county and can be purchased at the Ashe County Farmers Market. Take advantage of the opportunity to visit local farms and “self-pick” fruits and vegetables.

Ashe County is a large producer of beef and other meats. Miniature cattle are raised in the county and one needn’t travel far to see herds of buffalo, cattle, and goats roaming the fields.

The Handmade-Homegrown Farmers’ Market takes center stage in downtown West Jefferson on Saturdays and Wednesdays beginning in mid-April, and ending with a Holiday Market at the end of November and into December. Featuring fresh produce, nursery stock, handmade crafts and organic products, the Farmers’ Market provides a glimpse into the culture and heritage of the region. Each year the Ashe Chamber of Commerce solicits nominations for the Ashe Chamber of Commerce “Small Business of the Year” award. This award is presented to a small business demonstrating business practices championed by the Chamber. The nominee must be a Chamber member in good standing, provide a quality product or service and practice excellent customer service and employee relations. A strong commitment to the community through chamber-sponsored programs and community volunteerism is also required. The nominee must be in operation for more than 3 years and have a staff of fewer than 25 employees.

The award symbolizes both Ashe County and the Chamber by its representation of a fiddle, which is the Chamber’s logo. The fiddle is hand-painted by artist and Chamber member Raney Rogers and is, in itself, a coveted prize.

The first year this program was initiated, it contributed around 500 cans of food. The Scott Brothers also help yearly with the School Booster Club, sponsors Rotary Club functions and support youth sports through sponsorship.

BUSINESSThe first settlers to Ashe County were entrepreneurs in the truest sense. Arriving with determination and a strong work ethic, these early pioneers built the county. That spirit continues with the independent character of the people and the abundance of natural resources that are still plentiful today. Ashe County plays an active role in encouraging the entrepreneur and supports a growing business community.

Examples include the county’s participation with the Certified Entrepreneurial Community (CEC) designation, an AdvantageWest initiative to promote and support entrepreneurial activity. Ashe County, through a Golden lEAF grant and NC REAl, is benefiting from teacher training to instill entrepreneurial skills within the K-12 program. The new expansion of the airport demonstrates Ashe County’s active preparation for the continuing economic growth in the county. Construction is underway on a new 5,000-foot runway, which will accommodate the next level of jet and other aircraft. Additional hangar space is planned and the entire site is redesigned to allow for future growth.

In recent years, the growing tourism market has spawned many supporting industries. New hotels have opened and cabin rentals are increasing to accommodate the lodging needs of visitors. Restaurants are thriving. Retail stores and art galleries are prospering as visitors to the county seek that special item to take home. The construction industry is also experiencing growth as many visitors make the transition from tourists to settling down as residents. New showrooms have opened to accommodate the growing home building industry, providing the equipment, materials and services needed to build a new home. Banking, mortgage, insurance and property management companies are experiencing growth as well.

Agriculture always remains an important segment of the economy. Christmas trees, organic products, grapes, heritage apples, and self-pick berry farms are only a few of the agricultural endeavors actively supporting the Ashe County economy.

The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce strongly supports small business and industry. Within the Ashe Chamber Business Alliance, the Chamber is now providing confidential consulting services at no cost to currently operating small businesses and new start-ups in the Ashe County area.
