HistoryThe Smoky Hill Stagecoach Line and the Twelve Mile Stagecoach House were once located inside the DOLA, the latter a stopping place for supplies and for entertainment, such as a $5 dinner and music show. Although they are no longer visible, they remind us of the rich history of the area. For generations, Native Americans followed a route similar to the Smoky Hill Line. When gold was discovered west of Denver in 1858, a stagecoach line was developed, with the first stagecoach reaching Denver on May 17, 1859. Despite the gold rush, the stagecoach line only operated for 90 days.

The Smoky Hill Line came back to life in 1865, when a group of partners invested $3 million in the dormant line.

Riding the Smoky Hill Line was rough, sometimes crowded (up to 13 people), often dangerous, and always uncomfortable. At $75 each way, the Smoky Hill Line offered an exciting and expensive ride. The arrival of the Iron Horse brought an end to the stagecoach era. The Smoky Hill Line was abandoned in 1870 when the Kansas Pacific Railroad reached Denver.

The Dog Off Leash Area (DOLA)The Dog Off Leash Area at Cherry Creek State Park is unique among dog parks. The combination of 107 acres of short grass prairie with Cherry Creek running through the western edge makes it an oasis and destination for 250,000 dog lovers a year. Even more impressive is the protected wetlands preserve and full service horse stables that border the DOLA.

The DOLA is carefully managed to preserve and protect these unique qualities and provide for the safety of everyone using the area. We need everyone’s help to accomplish this. So please consider volunteering and follow the rules set in this brochure.

The DOLA reaches capacity when all parking spaces are full. Please plan your visit accordingly.

DOLA Rules:• Park is open from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM • Access to the DOLA is through designated entrances only. • Each handler is allowed up to 3 dogs. • Each handler must have a leash and waste bag for each dog. • Each handler must display a valid dog off leash pass (on

person) and a valid vehicle pass (in vehicle). • Each handler must immediately collect and dispose of all dog

feces. • All dogs must be leashed until they are inside the DOLA.

This includes the parking lot. • There are no restrictions on dog breeds. • All dogs must be properly controlled, even if off leash, and

may not create a nuisance or disturbance. • Dogs are prohibited from chasing or harassing wildlife,

including coyotes.

DOLA Etiquette:• Dogs must be properly vaccinated and licensed. • Dogs should not dig holes or disturb the vegetation. • Handlers should stay on the designated trails. • Dogs that are in heat or dogs that are aggressive should not

enter the DOLA.• Horses are not permitted inside the DOLA but are common

outside. When encountering a horse, please yield to it and be in physical control of your pet.

• Bicycles are allowed in the DOLA and must yield to pedestrians and dogs when in the DOLA. Dogs must be under control and should not harass cyclists.

• Place litter and used dog waste bags in the trash cans provided.• Handlers are responsible for the actions of their dog, which

must be able to return after the 1st command. Use caution while enjoying this area. • Prairie rattlesnakes and Bull snakes are often seen in this

area. It is best to leave any snake alone. • Coyotes and other wildlife can be seen throughout the year

in the DOLA and interactions may occur. Please report any concerns to a Park Ranger.

• The waters of Cherry Creek can be swift during certain times of the year. Be aware of the water level and current prior to your dog entering the creek.
