PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

TERM 4 BEGINS Welcome back to term 4 and a busy 9 weeks. I would particularly like to

welcome Santa in year 1 who has joined our school community from Nigeria. I

would also like to welcome Chris Turnbull who is taking over teaching in room

21 from Erin Moncrieff who is on maternity leave. I would also like to welcome

back staff who were on leave for all or part of term 3.

TEACHING UPDATE Term 3 is always a really important term in coordinating staffing for the following

year. It has been exciting to work through the process of appointing another 3

teachers to permanent positions at CLG starting in 2020. Appointing staff is a

wonderful part of my job as I know the difference employing the right staff can

make. In my time at CLG, with these new additions, I will have been involved in

appointing 12 permanent teachers to CLG. We have a great blend of new staff

and those with long term CLG experience and expertise.

Again we had 100s of applications as Colonel Light Gardens is a highly sought

after location to work at and we had many outstanding applicants to choose

from. After reading applications, contacting referees and interviewing for a full

day, I am thrilled to announce the following appointees:

Erin Moncrieff – Erin has been on contract at CLG for these past 3 years

and is a highly skilled and collaborative staff member. Prior to working at

CLG, Erin taught at Enfield Primary School. We have some amazing

contract teachers at CLG and it is fantastic when they are able to secure

permanent employment.

Kristy Noble – Kristy is a highly experienced teacher having worked for 20

or so years in the Riverland, most recently at Renmark North Primary

School. Kristy drove down for her interview and really impressed the

panel with her knowledge and expertise. Kristy has extensive teaching

and leadership experience. Her current principal is extremely

disappointed to be losing her.

Sam O’Neill – Sam is returning also from a stint in the country working at

Reidy Park Primary School in Mt Gambier. Sam is returning with his wife

and young family and is really pleased to be appointed to CLG. Sam

also comes highly recommended from his principal and has had

leadership experience this year at his school working 1 day a week as

the literacy coach.

STUDENT PLACEMENT PROCESS Next week we begin the process of determining teachers and classes for 2020.

Thank you to the parents and carers who decided they wanted to contribute to

the class placement process by providing relevant information for your child’s

current class teacher/s to consider when placing students for the following year.

Any remaining 2020 Placement Information Forms need to be returned to

your child’s teacher/s this week. This form is available from the school office or

emailing me at rick.bennallack149@schools.sa.edu.au to request a copy.

Providing this additional information is completely optional.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

PARENT OPINION SURVEY Every year, we send a survey link to a random selection of parents, asking them to provide feedback on how they feel we are going. The sample size is about 10% of the school community which for CLG equates to about 70 students. About 60% responded.

Parents were asked to rate their level of agreement with each statement below. 5 = strongly agree, 4 = agree, 3 = neither agree nor disagree, 2 = disagree and 1 = strongly disagree. Here is a summary of our results. Achieving a score in the 4s is the aim at every school for every statement. These results show the level of parent satisfaction has improved again this year. Thank you to all those who completed the survey. I will share some more results in the next newsletter.

Let’s get ready! - Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion - Thursday Week 4, Term 4

It’s time to get excited!

Our school will be holding a School Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion on 7 November 2019 to raise money for the CLGPS Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA).

In week 10 last term, each family received a letter with the event details, including how to create an online student profile page to request donations.

Thank you to the families who activated an online account and received generous donations. If you haven’t already, there is still plenty of time - you have three weeks from today to help raise money for our school and to earn yourself awesome prizes… so start fundraising as soon as you can!

A reminder also that each student is required to wear a white t-shirt on the day.

RUN 4 FUN COLOUR EXPLOSION

Colour Explosion I n f o r m a t i o n U p d a t e

On Thursday 7th November 2019 (term 4 week 4), Colonel Light Gardens Primary School will be holding a COLOUR EXPLOSION to raise money towards the building of a COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) over the basketball court next to the Mortlock building. This is our major fundraiser for the year. We are aiming to raise $15,000.

We are really clear that this is a blatant attempt to raise as much money as possible to build something that will benefit all students. We know through experience at many schools, that prizes do work as incentives to raise more money. This was proven 2 years ago when we raised over $30,000.

We only do this type of fundraiser once every 2 years. It has been approved by the Governing Council. Most other local schools have had a similar colour run this year. The students are very excited about participating.

Although you may not agree with incentive based fundraising, we are asking everyone to see the bigger picture. Schools have limited funds. We are wanting to build a COLA to benefit all 700 students and we need your support.

We are clear that: the fundraising component is voluntary for every student a child can still participate in the run without raising anything no student has to participate in the colour part of the day – they can choose to just miss that station a student can wear their school uniform on the day, however they won’t be participating in the colour part we are having lots of other activity stations

How will it work? 1. What to wear

we invite students to come in older casual clothes (not school uniform) to maximise the colour effect we particularly invite each student to wear a white t-shirt if you don’t have an old one at home, a white t-shirt is available at Big W for around $3.00 you however don't have to buy a t-shirt or anything students are invited to wear swimming goggles or sun glasses if concerned about getting powder in their eyes although we are told the colour washes out, blonde hair is most at risk of the colour remaining after a shower

2. Groupings We will split the school into 2 groups of 13 classes

o Group A – Doolette, Reade and Lower Mortlock o Group B – Upper Mortlock and Grange

3. The format each group will participate in a 30 minute session after lunch times for each group are to be advised, however it will either be 1:50pm or 2:30pm parents and carers are welcome to come and watch if it is a warm day we will have some gentle sprinkler frames students can choose to run through helping the

powder stick and run on the t-shirt classes will start at different stations and participate in a range of activities as they move around the school we have plastic bottles of the coloured powder to squeeze on students as they run past the colour area one station will be a 20 m track students run through to be squirted with the coloured powder by teachers

and the fundraising committee each group will be involved for about 30 minutes passing the colour station around 3 to 4 times so students don’t go back to classroom, parents are welcome to take their child home after it is finished if they are staying to the end of the day, they will be supervised outside

4. The fundraising our goal of $15,000, works out at an average of $23.00 per student a host of prizes are available for those who raise different amounts – the student nominates their prize the prize list is on the posters displayed around the school any family with an objection to the prize option is invited to just make a donation if you don’t want to register online, a paper donation form is available from the office

PIANO CONCERT

2019 PIANO CONCERT Well done to all of those students who performed in the piano concert in week 10 last term. It was lovely to listen to the

students play and see how clever they are on the piano. Concerts are a great way to give students the opportunity to play

in front of an audience, making their learning purposeful. Thank you to all of the families and friends who came along to

listen to the students and to our wonderful piano teachers, Angela and Matthew for supporting. It was a proud night for all

involved.

Private piano lessons are available during school hours and take place in the piano room on the mezzanine floor below

room 21. The duration of the lessons is half an hour. Piano tuition forms are available at the front office. If you would like

Once registered you are able to select which day/s and timeslots you are available, you can also select those times as single occasions or for regular re-occurring occasions. OSHC PUPIL FREE DAY: Friday 8th November 2019

On Friday 8th November (Pupil Free Day) OSHC is going to Wallis Cinemas Mitcham to see the movie “Arctic Justice”. Children must be at OSHC no later than 8.45 am. We will be catching a private bus.

Please make sure that appropriate clothing is worn (i.e. sensible walking shoes, hats etc.)

There are no half day bookings. Cost for the day is $59.35 per child (normal CCS applies) Cancelations later than 48 hours prior to the day will incur the full fee.

Staff must be given any medication (in original packaging with instructions) that their child might require during that day. All children must bring their own recess and lunch (no spending money). Afternoon tea is provided.

Year 7 student, Jacob Harris was excited to have

been the only CLGPS student selected for City South

SAPSASA District Soccer. His team tied at second

place on the ladder for Division 2, which means City

South will be promoted to Division 1 next year.

He had a great time and due to the very high playing

standard, feels the experience has helped him improve

as a player. Well done Jacob!
