COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Mechanical EngineeringWHY MECHANICAL ENGINEERING?
Because it’s exciting and all-encompassing.You’ll learn the engineering aspects of almosteverything that moves in the universe, including fluids, solids, thermal systems, robotics, the human body, automotive parts, energy, materials and aerospace technology.
Mechanical engineers play a role in much of what people drive, play with or live in. ey design and build engines and artificialmuscles, computers and wind turbines, hovercrafts and satellites. It is theirresponsibility to design devices — from asimple doorknob to a complex space shuttle— whose parts and assemblies function in asafe, reliable, predictable and efficient fashion.
Mechanical engineering students are indemand. With an average starting salary ofmore than $60,000, UMaine’s mechanicalengineering students are among the highest-paid graduates in four-year degree programs.
WHY UMAINE?
At UMaine, you will learn how to addresssome of the most pressing issues of our time, including clean energy, environmentalsustainability, efficient transportation andcutting-edge health care technology.
At UMaine, engineering classes are small. Our mechanical engineering program isaccredited. UMaine’s College of Engineeringoffers a five-year B.S.–M.B.A. degree with theMaine Business School, as well as a minor inengineering leadership and management.UMaine is home to one of the country’soldest honors programs.
When you become a UMaine mechanicalengineering student, you become part of astrong, well-connected network. Our alumniare leaders in energy, public utilities, manufacturing, aerospace technology and
transportation, but they also make a mark inbusiness and entrepreneurship. ecurriculum and hands-on researchopportunities at UMaine give students anadvantage in the job market and a strongfoundation to pursue a competitive graduateprogram.
UMaine’s American Society of MechanicalEngineers (ASME) coaster car team has wonBest Design at the Coaster Car Derby in NewBrunswick. e student design team thatcreated UMaine’s human-powered submarineplaced third in the speed category atInternational Submarine Races in Maryland.e University of Maine Clean SnowmobileTeam has placed fifth in the Society ofAutomotive Engineers Clean SnowmobileChallenge in Michigan.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
ere are too many undergraduate researchopportunities for mechanical engineeringstudents to list here, but undergraduates areable to gain hands-on experience in ourbiomedical engineering lab, advanced roboticsand robotics surgery lab, and inflatable spacestructures/lunar habitat lab. One of thestrengths of the Mechanical EngineeringDepartment is the senior design capstone, ayearlong class in which students gain hands-on experience. Seniors can choose from avariety of design projects, which haveincluded land drones, rescue rovers, remote-controlled aircraft, human powered vehicles, aquaculture data buoys, and hydrofoilingsailboats.
