  • Traditional Conception of Teacher and Knowing

Through the things and examples of past, we can catch some good and creative ideas that would make the world to be happier.

Teacher having Profound Knowledge with Virtuous character

  • Need for Innovation in the Current College of Education System1. The Rise of the knowledge and Information-oriented Society and Newly Required Roles for Teachers

Teachers as Researcher with InformationForeign LanguageMulti-cultural Capabilities

  • 2. Training New Teachers as Comprehensive Leaders equipped with Intellectual and Moral Excellence

educational justice and ethics based on communal solidarity

an educational institution system that can provide teachers with these capabilities through a kind of long term curriculum (e.g., The New Jersey Project, The Theory of Major Transition, Prognostic Socialization, etc.)

  • 3. Strengthening on-the-job training and teaching specialty

The need of continuous & in-depth practical research on both the context of teaching materialsand methods of teaching

Students in Colleges of Education should be provided with at least a 6-month practicum

-in order to have the capability to manage a class, -to provide sufficient guidance to students, and -to carry out the other myriad affairs required from a teacher.

  • 4. Guaranteeing Social Status and Pride in Teaching

To consider such aspects as -responsibility, -knowledgeable professionalism, -a sense of pride, -the level of commitment in education, -social respect, and -and other motivations behind the activities of teachers

    Qualitative Developmentof Education in Korea

  • Preconditions for designing a 6-year education system1) Teacher as a practical researcher 2) Requirements for Professionalism in Teacher 3) Openness and Comprehensiveness of the Teacher Education System

  • 1) Teacher as a practical researcherteacher as a practical researcher

    - To have intelligence and ethics, rather than a simple messenger of knowledge, and - To strengthen their field experience in order to adapt to the changes in society, add overseas training, and - To strengthen their professional ability by having them complete curriculum-pedagogies courses, - To display openness, comprehensiveness, plurality and specialization, according to the development stages of each society Korean colleges of educations, within the boundary of universities, have achieved, to a certain degree, openness and comprehensiveness. However

-Teacher training programs have been easily influenced by outside pressure, resulting in failing to systematically promote teacher specialization and professionalization.

  • 2) Requirements for ProfessionalismQualitative excellence is generally connected to internal conditions of professional authority of teachers.

Internal conditions, whether innate or learned, are

-abilities and qualities that are inherent to the teacher as an individual. -the state where excellence in curriculum knowledge, specialty of pedagogies and a mature personality are integrated.

The main purpose is to expertly teach his/her subjects which requires sufficient knowledge in terms of research and the application of excellent pedagogy.

  • 3) Openness and Comprehensiveness of Teacher Education SystemAn open position must be

    - adopted on the grounds of recruiting talented people and securing the flexibility of teacher training, based on a purposive system for teacher education.

An open-comprehensive 6-year model, which has openness in admitting students with the basis of purposive 6-year system of college of education, would be reasonable, considering the lack of teacher ethics, the teacher's role as a practical researcher.

  • Characteristics of the 6-year-Teacher Education System 1) Integration: -Training education leaders with intelligence and morality-including general ability, curricular ability, personality, and sense of values and ethics

    2) OpennessThe idea of openness is to 'avoid limiting system management to internal structures, and to implement with flexibility in relation to society and neighboring systems.'

  • In sumThe 6-year curriculum model must meet the following requirements. The subject of education and research area should be expanded to include leaders and researchers of school and social education, centering around the current middle school teacher training system.

This may be done by allowing excellent talent from other colleges and universities to transfer to colleges of education, and by providing an infrastructure that could train competent teachers from a variety of backgrounds.

Double majors or minors should be made obligatory in order to meet the various demands of teachers.

Foreign language will be intensively taught to students of college of education for qualification of globalized and multi-cultural society.

A practical knowledge of education and ethics may be developed through taking liberal arts and general studies.
