About SNUSeoul National University (SNU) is and has been the indisputable leader of advanced education in Koreasince its establishment in 1946. SNU has earned this reputation by maintaining the highest standards inboth teaching and research. Kwanak Campus, the main campus of SNU, accommodates four graduateschools, eleven colleges, sixty- six research institutes, and other supporting facilities. Yeongeon campus is the medical campus which includes the University Hospital as well as other research institutes andorganizations related to medical sciences. About 20,000 undergraduate students and 11,000 graduatestudents enroll at SNU every year. The faculty, consisting of 1800 professors and instructors from aroundthe world, teaches students and conducts research at SNU.

Seoul, the city of Soul!Seoul is the capital of Korea with a history of 600 years. It always had been the nation’s capital since YiDynasty which was founded in 1394 and it has become the center of administration, economic, business,culture, technology and education. Seoul has four distinctive seasons. Temperature shows large seasonalvariation - reaching as high as 38.4 degrees Celsius in summer and dropping as low as minus 19.2 degreesCelsius in winter. The total area of Seoul is 605.52 square kilometers or 0.6 percent of the entire countryand has a population of approx. 10,300,000 which accounts for about a quarter of the total nationalpopulation. The number of foreign residents in Seoul is more than 130,000 and consists of almost 100different nationalities. They form a small global village in each part of Seoul. Seoul is truly a metropolitancity where tradition meets modernization.

Road to SNU SNU offers international students various ways of study, not only as degree-seeking students but also asshort-term students such as exchange students, visiting students or joint/double degree students. A largenumber of international students in the past have enjoyed studying and grasping Korean culture at Korea’smost prestigious university. Out of 31,000 students, more than 1,200 students are international students,and about 200 among them are international exchange/visiting students. These short-term staying studentsexplore not only Korea but also other neighboring Asian countries because of its geopolitical location.Many international students who studied at SNU have become academically professional or competentworkers specializing in Asia in their own fields.

Exchange Student ProgramExchange program is for students in SNU’s partner universities who wish to study at SNU for one or twosemesters and transfer credits to their home institution. The first official student exchange programlaunched in 1995 with the University of Tokyo and the number of institutions where they agreed for studentexchange program has increased to approx. 400 institutions all over the world. To be an exchange student,candidates must be officially nominated by their home institution and pay the tuition fee at their homeinstitution. Dormitories are provided and fees for taking Korean language course will be partially supported

Visiting Student ProgramVisiting student program is offered to students who are from non-partner universities but wants to study atSNU for one or two semesters. Students should pay the tuition fee at SNU and may request for credittransfer at their home institution. Dormitory is not available for visiting students and also subsidy for Koreanlanguage program is not provided. To apply for a visiting student program, students must apply directly atthe Office of International Affairs, SNU.

Application Criteria & Process

1. Eligibility Qualification● Must be enrolled at least 2 semesters at home institute

● Have a GPA 3.0 or above / 4.0

● Language proficiency of either English or Korean is highly recommended, but not compulsory

All applicants for Visiting Student Program should pay the application fee when they submit the completed application documents.

Restriction● The College of Medicine is restricted to students who are currently studying medicine at their home

university.

● The College of Dentistry is open ONLY to masters level students currently enrolled in a master program at School of Dentistry or equivalent at their home university. The student exchange program is NOT available at the undergraduate level for the College of Dentistry.

● Applicants, who apply for the Korean History major, must provide a proof of Korean language ability.A satisfactory level of Korean language ability should be either (1) Level 5 or above of official Korean Language Proficient Test or (2) Level 5 or above of the Korean Test conducted at the SNU LanguageInstitute.

● MBA program does not accept exchange program through the OIA. In order to apply for an exchange program at MBA, please inquire at [email protected]

Applicationdocuments are non-returnable once they have been submitted to the OIA. Please be aware that we willbe unable to continue processing your application if you do not submit ALL the required applicationdocuments.

4. Screening ProcedureThe OIA receives applications and reviews that allapplication requirements have been met. The applicationpacket is then forwarded to the screening committee ofeach college for assessment. Not all candidatesnominated by partner universities are successful, butsome may fail to have an admission if the requirementsdo not meet the committee’s expectation. When theacceptance is confirmed, the OIA notifies the resultthrough students’ home institution. The OIA is notresponsible for the selection process and its results sincethe decision is made by each college.

5. Acceptance PackageThe acceptance package will include Certificate ofAdmission, Course registration guideline & Courseregistration form, and other necessary information.

Academics & Students Life

1. Academic Calendar

* Academic transcript will be sent to home institution for exchange students for credit transfer in mid-August andin mid-February. Academic transcript for visiting students will not be sent to the home institution from the OIA andvisiting students must request for an issuance of academic transcript at the Registrar’s Office.

2. CoursesMajority of courses are taught in Korean but each college or department offers number of courses inEnglish. List of courses for a new semester is available at the beginning of January or July each year.Undergraduate students can take courses up to 17 credits and graduate students can take up to 12 credits.

3. Housing● On-Campus Housing: The Gwanak campus is the main campus of the SNU. Most colleges andschools are located at the Gwanak campus except for the College of Medicine, which is located at theYeongun campus in northern part of Seoul. Housing for exchange students is available at theKwanaksa (Gwanak campus dormitory).

● Off-Campus Housing: Off-campus housing is available around the campus. SNU does not providean assistance to find off-campus housing and it is students’ own responsibility to find accommodationoutside campus.

4. Students ActivitiesSNU offers variety of students activities andsports clubs. Students clubs includemusical bands, choir, orchestra, dance,painting, photography, students newspaper,traditional Korean music, travel clubs andSNU International Students Association.Sports clubs are available in fencing, golf,basketball, rugby, scuba-diving, snowboard,ski, horse riding, baseball, yacht, judo,kendo, soccer, taekwondo, tennis, etc. Themost popular students clubs amongst theseare taekwondo, judo, kendo and travelingclubs.

6. Visa It is mandatory for every exchange/visiting student to obtain travel medical insurance. Students shouldcomply with the following guidelines:

* Note to Chinese Students: If you wish to study in Korea, you must obtain permission from the KoreanMinistry of Justice. You can do this easily by obtaining a certificate for confirmation of visa issuance (CCVI)from the OIA. If you would like us to send your CCVI along with your Certificate of Admission, please sendus the four (4) documents listed in the Checklist of Required Application Documents (Paragraph 7, SectionH). Please be aware that we provide this service ONLY to exchange students.

7. Insurance & Health CareTravel Insurance It is mandatory for every exchange/visiting student to obtain travel medical insurance. Students shouldcomply with the following guidelines:

● You have to be insured by an insurance company which takes effect in your country or in Korea ● The insurance policy should cover sickness, accident and death during your study in SNU ● You can register for courses after submitting the copy of the insurance policy which states the above

conditions ● Insurance policies in languages other than Korean or English should be notarized before submission ● In case the insurance expires before finishing the course, you have to resubmit the insurance policy

copy or the notarized document after renewal or reapplication of the insurance policy ● Any inquiries and information regarding insurance should be conducted by yourselves with the staffs

of insurance company. SNU does not involve in any insurance-related affairs

Medical Mutual Aid Service SNU provides students medical mutual aid service, which provides partial support for the health cost ofa student’s medical expense on illness, accidents (occurred on campus) and other medical care.Students can receive the benefits of the mutual aid by paying the fee of 2,500 KRW per semester uponthe entrance of SNU. It is not mandatory but is recommended to register for the service.

Korean Language Program for Exchange Students

at Seoul National University


SubsidyKorean language program is separate from regular university courses, and students have to pay thetuition fee. For exchange students only, however, the OIA and LEI made a special arrangement infinancial subsidy during regular semester periods (spring term & fall term ONLY):

● Students who are majoring Korean Studies or Korean Language in home institution: Full financial support

● Students who are not majoring in Korean Studies or Korean Language in home institution: 70 per cent of the tuition fee is supported from the OIA and 30 per cent of the fee should be paid by the students

* Above financial subsidy is not available for visiting students. For any other types of financial support, please

inquire to LEI at [email protected].

2. ApplicationThe OIA will collect applications from exchange students and will forward applications along with recommendation to KLEC. The notification of acceptance and detailed schedule will be forwarded tothe applicants along with the admission package for exchange students.

● Application Procedure: Students shall apply for the language program through the OIA. Further notice will be announced once the acceptance is confirmed.

● Transcript: Students completing this course will receive an official transcript from the KLEC. Please be advised that the grades you have earned at KLEC will not appear on your general SNU transcript.

3. OthersTaking Additional SNU Courses While registered in the KLEC's program, you will be allowed to register for regular university coursesoffered by SNU. However, in consideration of the heavy course load of the KLEC's Regular KoreanLanguage Program, we strongly recommend that you enroll in no more than 2 regular universitycourses if you are registered in this program.

SNU Buddy Program

The OIA organizes a buddy program forinternational students in order to assist theiradjustment in Korea and campus life. Uponyour buddy request, the OIA matches you withone of SNU buddy students, who will be yourhelper and friend throughout the semester.

During your stay at SNU, the SNU buddy shallmeet up with you regularly or irregularly to buildgood relationship. At the beginning of thesemester, SNU buddy°Øs main jobs are to helpyou to settle in new environment, which mayinclude :

● airport pick-up services ● help you to find accommodation or guide

you for a dormitory life● help you to register or change classes & may

give you information related to classes● show you around the campus and Seoul● help you with other necessary administrative

procedures such as foreign registration at the Immigration’s Office, and opening bank account

● obtain cultural experiences as well as participate in many events for international students and buddies organized by the OIA

By participating in various activities held at theOIA such as International Food Festival,Cultural Heritage Tour and Wine & CheeseParty with international students, they becomeyour best Korean friends. Many internationalstudents had great experiences with their SNUbuddy students during their stay at SNU andkeep their good friendship even from thedistance.

To be honest, when I first came to Korea in fall I did not like it too much. I hadproblems with the language, I knew almost nobody, and the food was either tastelessor too spicy. And sitting 6 hours a day in classes was something I was not used toanymore as a grad student. But in time I came to like it here very much. The OIAarranged great trips, which I can strongly recommend for new students, and mybuddy put much effort in making my life comfortable. By roasting the kimchi beforeeating it (which makes it less spicy) I adapted slowly to the food and now I can eatalmost everything. By participating in the SNU events I got new friends quite quickly.Many customs and places felt strange and uncomfortable in the first place, but

experiencing them and trying out new stuff turned out to be the funniest thing after a while. For example many times Iwalked by places which looked like crappy shacks owned by the mafia from the outside, so I thought nothing is goingto get me in there ever. But one day when I was drunk, I walked into one accidentally, and once inside, it turned out tobe a beautiful traditional drinking place with very kind and curious people. Ever since I enjoy meeting friends andsearching for weird looking bars together. Surely, for the SNU is the most admired university in Korea, there are timeswhen you can do nothing but study week after week. But life is what you make of it, so if you are open minded,confident, willing to learn and try out new stuff you can have a hell of a time here. I know already when I go back toAustria I will miss many things. Probably hot meals available around the clock, bars which serve food, a library openedon weekends, and a pretty girl at the office who is there for you every time you need help.

My experience at SNU has been full of highlights. Most of all I have enjoyed meetingpeople from Korea and other parts of the world. I arrived in Korea in the middle of winterabout one month before semester was due to start. I stayed in a backpacker’s inInsadong. I was impressed with the restaurant culture in the area and enjoyed going outfor foods and drinks with some friends I made whilst staying at the dorm...... My subjectsat SNU have been terrific. They are all taught in English and have had a warm and friendlyclassroom atmosphere. Other foreign students and Koreans have joined to create anatmosphere of respect and interest where students could put forward their differingpoints of views, often reflecting on the contrasts between Korea and their own countries. Iam glad I chose Korea to complete an exchange semester. The people have been veryfriendly and inviting and it has been easy for me to settle in.

I always dreamt of studyingin SNU and now that I amhere, I experience a lot goodthings more than I expected.SNU really do have a lot ofthings to offer! Here, there isa balance between learningand having fun. SNUprovides me with not onlyopportunities to learn andunderstand the Koreanculture, but also to get toknow cultures from different

parts of the world. Here, there are a lot chances to get toknow new friends who makes my stay in this countrymore interesting. And because of the SNU Buddyprogram, I can meet a lot of people who are kind andwilling to help foreign students like me. So far, I can saythat the quality of education I am getting in SNU will behelpful for me in the near future when I pursue furtherstudies about Korea. Aside from these, SNU provides mewith a lot of outside-of-the-classroom experiences suchas study tours and cultural exchange activities, thus I amable to broaden my perspective of the world. The SNUcampus gracefully changes its ambience as the seasonchanges; making campus life more enjoyable. Only twomonths have passed since I came here, but in that shortspan of time, I have easily gotten accustomed to the life inthe city of Seoul. I am sure that in the coming days, mystay here will become more exciting and worthwhile.

When people ask me about how I liked my time at Seoul National University, I neverquite know where to begin. There is a wide range of reasons that always made mecoming back- the first two times as student and finally as lecturer. The one thing I cansay for sure is, that these times here have been the most meaningful, important andimpressive periods of my studies. I am sure that holds true for most people havingstayed here. Why is that so? SNU provides a perfect infrastructure for perfectly individualized studies on a highscientific level. Being the No 1 Korean University does not only create a prestigiousreputation for every student here, it also makes you choose from Korea’s top notchscholars. They offer classes on the most up to date scientific level possible.Simultaneously, high practice orientation and student involvement will make you apply

learned concepts directly. The extensive list of courses offered in English makes it possible to cover almost every topic.At SNU I found extensive support for all my problems, requests and concerns. Professors are very close to students andaccessible for all academic concerns. Outside University grounds an amazing country is waiting to be explored. Seoul is amarvelous mixture of sparkling modernity and traditional complexity. The mountainous nature surrounding SNU is amazingand even if you are not quite a friend of hiking yet, I bet you will be after your stay. I hope I could make you feel what makesSNU such an extraordinary place to spend your time at. See you soon at Seoul National University!
