What is at the Museum?
How Did it Work?
Attitudes OVERALL
Attitudes Welcome Be welcoming - from the car park attendant to the curator; from car park/foyer, back to car park/foyer
S Families are welcomed in the TIC where they pay for tickets and again by Visitor Assistants in the barn or courtyard. The VAs in particular are good at being proactive in greeting families because it is seen as part of their role. When the new car park is operational, there could be some signage that welcomes families to the Museum. An image would work well. When Abbot’s Hall and the cottages are open, they will provide a free entry experience that will be able to model family friendliness and welcome and encourage families to pay to explore the rest of the site.
Be positive and accommodating: show through staff attitudes to families and children that you value their custom and understand their needs.
S Staff will try to accommodate families, pointing out resources and keeping an eye on buggies if families want to leave them, although the whole site is accessible to buggies and most families prefer to take buggies with them, as the distances are quite large.
Ensure staff can be clearly identified
S Staff wear an informal uniform that makes them approachable. Their fleece style jacket carries the Museum logo and they have a name badge on a chain.Wearing a family friendly pin badge or a “families welcome” or “here to help” badge might be useful especially on family activity days, but also for staff that visitors are likely to meet further into the site (away from the entrance).
