OCTOBER 2019
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The school year is off to a great start. September was an extremely busy
month with students getting back into the swing of classes, the start of many
exciting activities and student sporting events. École St. Cecilia has an
environment that is alive and vibrant.
During the past month our grade 7 students participated in the annual retreat
where they had the opportunity to develop new friendships, develop
leadership skills and to get better acquainted with the staff. Soccer season is
well underway, and the boy’s and girl’s teams have been rather successful. The
Cross Country has participated in time trials and finals. Thanks for the
commitment and dedications of the coaches: Ms. Munoz, Ms. Bragnalo, Ms.
Toniolo, Ms. Migaldi and Mr. Labonte. There are numerous other activities
that took place during September so please read the entire newsletter to find
out about the past and future activities at École St. Cecilia School.
We are now into our second month of this school year. It is hard to believe
that 10% of the school year is already over. Thank you to the many parents
who attended “Meet the Teacher Night” on September 19. Your positive
comments and support are greatly appreciated. The evening was an excellent
opportunity for parents and staff to meet, review curriculum and class/school
routines and to share in the daily learning environment of the classroom. We
believe that close communication between home and school is essential. If you
have a concern, do not hesitate to express it to your child’s teachers. Early
and on-going information sharing can help to resolve problems before they
are serious.
Just before “Meet the Teacher Evening” the School Advisory Council held their Annual General Meeting. We
would like to thank all the individuals that have put their name forward to be a part of the executive. This year the School Advisory Council will be having their Casino on December 15th and 16th at Century Casino
on Fort Road. They are in need of volunteers, so please refer to page 7 of this newsletter for information on
how to contact our casino chair. The money raised is used to purchase supplies, equipment, etc. that enrich
the education of your children. Just a reminder, the School Advisory Council will hold their first
meeting on Oct 7th @ 5:30 PM in the Conference Room. Come out and learn more about what is
happening at École St. Cecilia.

As we enter the month of October, a special time of Thanksgiving and prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, we
are reminded of our many blessings: a Catholic community which is supportive and positive, a skilled and
dedicated staff, energetic and responsible students…. We have so much to be thankful for both at school and
within our families and communities. May each of our families continue to be blessed with the Lord’s bountiful
goodness and abundant love. Happy Thanksgiving to each of you!
Mr. Roman Iwanyk Mrs. Carm Shim
Principal Assistant Principal
A Prayer for Thanksgiving:
Thank you, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank you for being
with us in all our joys and sorrows, for your comfort in our sadness, your companionship in our loneliness.
Thank you for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole of our lives. Thank you for friends, for health
and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us.
Amen.

Hello Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Students who attend École St. Cecilia Jr High!
Your School Advisory Council (SAC) needs YOU!! Our council meets 6-8 times per
year at 5:30pm at the school. Our meetings typically last less than 45 minutes and we
use that time to support our students’ success at school by getting informed about
school activities, discuss future school plans, support the bi-annual CASINO, and most
importantly, connect with our fellow parents and community members.
As a parent or guardian of a St. Cecilia Tiger, you are a member of our SAC! Feel free
to join us at our General Meeting on October 7th, 2019 @ 5:30 pm in the
conference room. Come and participate in the important conversation about our
children’s junior high school.
Thank you!

Power teacher Pro Gradebook
Power Teacher Pro Gradebook Explained video for parents: https://youtu.be/boVV98DfVUg
In this revised gradebook, when a teacher creates an assignment, they attach at least one
key learner outcome to that assignment. Along with the numerical grade of the
assignment, a teacher also assesses the connected learner outcome(s) chosen in terms
of levels of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient and exemplary). In the quick-
look ups on PowerSchool, which can be accessed at any time, the achievement of each
student is expressed numerically as well through levels of achievement on the learner
outcomes chosen. This visual representation clearly leads parents, student and teachers
into dialogue about next steps in learning.
At the November 28th and March Parent/student/teacher interviews, the
PowerTeacherPro gradebook along with student work will be excellent resources to
engage in dialogue about each student’s learning to date and to set goals for continued
progress and success. The subject level teacher will follow up through email with
parents of students who show signs of struggle who did not attend an interview.
The June 26th progress reports will include an assessment of student learner skills, a
percentage grade in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion as well as a
summary level of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient, exemplary) for each
curricular learner outcome assessed during the term.
Parent user name and passwords can be accessed by calling the school office.
The ongoing outcomes-based assessment and reporting structure gives parents, students and
teachers clear information about student achievement which informs next steps in teaching
and learning for the continued progress and success of each student.
