The weather was beautiful and everyone had a great time! A message from John Mollenhauer, TCA President Near Term Forecast To say we live in interesting times is obviously a classic understatement. Who would have imagined, for instance, that Ottawa and Queen's Park would collectively own 12% of GM or that Canada's largest insurance company (WSIB) would have a $14 billion unfunded liability; and who in their right mind would have believed that George Bush and Bill Clinton would share a stage and actually agree on a global agenda. No wonder economists are confused. The good news, if good news is possible during these uncertain times, is that a growing number of economists believe that the worst of the current global economic collapse is behind us. The not-so-good news is that the full impact of a troubled economy to the ICI construction industry is arguably 6 - 12 months later. As a result, I'm afraid our forecast for the coming months, despite the optimism among economists, is that most TCA members will likely see things get a little worse before they get better. Thankfully, however, Statistics Canada reports that we have far fewer corporate bankruptcies than in either of the last two recessions and what doesn't kill us will ultimately make us stronger. As always, don't hesitate to call if we can help.
