The Customer

Ueda Heavy Gear Works Ltd. is one of the Japan’sflagships of heavy industry.

Established in 1893, Ueda Heavy Gear Worksbecame the leading gear manufacturer in Japan, supplying large gears, pinions and other powertransmission components to all major steel andmachinery manufacturers in Japan.

Located in Osaka, specialising in manufacturinglarge cylindrical girth gears, pinions and also bevelgears, Ueda Heavy Gear Works has a large numberof MAAG gear cutting machines.

Why CNC Design?

CNC Design has developed a complex solution forCNC conversion of the MAAG shapers and tested itin several successful installations around the world(Australia, USA, Japan, South Africa) for all typesof MAAG heavy duty gear cutting shapers (SH250,SH450, SH600, SH1200)

Mr Masakatsu Ueda, President of Ueda HeavyGear Works, explains his decision to work withCNC Design:

“CNC Design has done conversions for many typesof machine tools and we trusted they have thebest solution for our MAAG. I am happy theysolved all the requests for our MAAG shapers”

CASE STUDY / Reference #43

Retrofit of a Maag SH600 from conventional machine to full CNC with SINUMERIK 840Dsl.

The Challenge

CNC Design’s task was to develop a CNCconversion solution which will retain themachine’s flexibility and accuracy and offeradditional high level functions such as: gearmeasuring; simpler operation, integration with thefactory network, easy work setup and increasedmachine productivity. For this type of machine,CNC conversion requires significant mechanicaland electrical re-design including: newtransmissions for all axes, new electrical controlcabinet, new machine operating system andtraining for the operators. Very short installationtime was also critical to maximise availability ofthe equipment. Working closely with machineusers in developing this solution was essential forthe successful completion of this project.

The Result

Our first project in Osaka for a MAAG SH250/300was completed in April 2011, in record time (twoweeks full installation). With Ueda Heavy GearWorks Ltd having already placed an order toconvert an even larger machine, their MAAGSH600/735, to CNC, the success of this project isundoubted. In Mr Ueda’s words:

“After the conversion done by CNC Design, wehave been using our MAAG shapers without anytroubles. The removal of many mechanicalsettings and the user friendly operating panel aresaving us so much time. Our MAAG shapers wererevived completely by CNC Design”
