My how time has flown! One-half of the school year is complete. We have many
opportunities for you to support our school this coming month like our second
quarter awards ceremonies, Daddy/Daughter Dance, Book Fair, and our
7th annual International Festival.
I am grateful every day for the opportuni-ty to be called “principal.” I strongly
believe that all parents want the best for their children and want them to be suc-
cessful in school. Our teachers and staff need your help and partnership to make
this happen as we focus on this second semester. Children benefit greatly when
parents/guardians take an active role in their child’s education. Research proves
that when scholars have parental support at home, they enjoy their learning and
school life even more.
Please support our efforts to finish strong by making sure your child at-tends school
daily and on time. Classes begin at 8am. We need your help to reduce daily tar-
dies. Also, please remember report cards go home on February 9th, please take
time to review your child’s report card
and contact their teacher if you have any
questions or concerns.
CALLING ALL FAMILIES!!
Saturday, February 23rd is our 7th annual
International Festival! The festival is from 11am-2pm and admission is $2 per family.
We are celebrating the diversity in our school community. We are looking for
volunteers to share a cultural talent or skill. If you or your child would be willing to share a talent or skill (i.e. dance, play
African drums, sing, etc.,) please notify your child's classroom teacher, or com-
plete the form sent home by your child's teacher to confirm that you will be able to
perform during our International Festival. Thank you for helping to strengthen our
home-school partnership, and for making our International Festival a continued
success! If you have any questions,
please contact Ms. Bourguignon or Ms.
Graham at 980-343-6480.
I will continue communicating information about school events, dates and activities
using email and phone connect-ed messag-

PLEASE CELBRATE WITH US AT
OUR INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
ON SAT FEB 23RD FROM 11AM-2PM!!
We have a lot of celebrations in the month of February. We are celebrating
Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presi-dent’s Day, Black History Month, and
Dental Health.
We are also going to learn a lot about China and celebrating the culture for the
International Festival. Your child will have lots of exciting news from the classroom
to share each week about what we have learned.
Please have your child at school every day by 8 am, and please help us encourage
your children to be independent learners and be on their best behavior.
Continue to read each night with your
child, and sign their agenda. Thank you for your support!

OUR INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
ON SAT FEB 23RD FROM 11AM-2PM!!
Welcome to Third
Quarter! Wow, it is
hard to believe we are
halfway through the
school year! We appre-
ciate all that you have
done to help your child
have a positive year in first grade!
Our Reader’s Workshop lessons are teaching
strategies to study character’s actions and
examine their traits. When reading with your
child, ask them to use evidence from the
story to describe the character's personality.
In mathematics, we are working on identifying
2-D & 3-D geometric shapes based on their
attributes. You can help you child by remind-
ing them that shapes are everywhere! Get in
the habit of pointing out the shapes in your
world, and very soon your child will be doing
the same. Some examples include a cone-
shaped Christmas tree, cylinder shaped pipes,
or a rectangular prism TV. Ask questions
about the shapes: Which ones could you
stack on top of each other? Which ones have
a curve? Which have only flat faces? What
rolls? How many corners does each shape
have?
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday,
February 23rd for Reedy Creek’s Annual
International Day! First grade will educate
you with wonderful projects and creations
about the great countries of Australia and
New Zealand! Mark your calendars for this
exciting event!

OUR INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
ON SAT FEB 23RD FROM 11AM-2PM!!
In literacy we are finishing up our biog-
raphy unit and then moving into our unit on International Studies. Our students will focus on South America
and Mexico.
This will prepare students for our up-coming International Festival.
In math, we are finishing up our focus on multiplication and division and start-ing our unit on fractions.
Students will learn to recognize frac-tions as part of a whole, read them,
write them, order them on a number line, find equivalent fractions and com-pare them according to size.
Please continue to make sure that your child is reading each night and studying
math facts.

Can you believe we are halfway through the
school year?! Mid-year testing is coming to a
close. Report card grades were submitted
prior, so teachers will communicate scores
as tests are completed.
We are so excited to be participating in the
MORE study curriculum where we are
integrating reading and writing with science
and social studies! We are learning all about
dinosaurs and are writing opinion pieces
based on information we’ve gathered
through research. In math, we are continu-
ing to work on strategies to solve various
problems and are using regrouping.
Please continue to support your child’s
academic growth during second semester.
Continue reading with your each night.
Monitor that your child accurately answers
comprehension questions using details from
the text as evidence. Please practice telling
time, counting collections of coins, and
reviewing the concepts on math sheets sent
home. Please continue to check and sign
your child’s agenda nightly, and to return
their Friday Folder weekly.
Keep a lookout for information regarding
our Valentine’s Day party!
Thank you for
your continued
support!
Attendance Counts! The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in
academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher
and the class to build their skills and progress if students are frequently ab-
sent. Please partner with us to increase school attendance.
If your child will be absent from school,
please send an e-mail to [email protected].
Please be sure to include the following information:
Your child's name and grade/
teacher
Parent name
The reason for absence
A callback phone number
You can also call the school at 980-343-6480.
This will support us tremendously.
Thanks for your support!

Math—February is a busy month full of
learning new math concepts. We will begin
by adding and subtracting decimals to the
thousandths, transition into multiplying multi
-digit whole numbers, and end by multiplying
decimals. Scholars are encouraged to prac-
tice multiplication fact families at home to
aid in their success this month.
Reading—During the month of February,
fifth grade scholars will be reading Historical
Fiction books to practice applying fiction
reading strategies. Scholars will spend time
noticing the setting, and how the time peri-
od affects the story line and the characters’
actions. Scholars will make inferences about
daily life and make connections to nonfiction
information about that time period.
International Festival—This month, we
will also begin to prepare for our Interna-
tional Festival by reading, discussing, and
completing activities about African folktales
and fairy tales. We hope you’ll join us on
February 23 to see our hard work on dis-
play.

when they return to school. Please let us know how we can support you in making sure your
