GOOD LETTERING DEPENDS UPON THE PRINCIPLE OF UNIFORMITY. THIS INVOLVES CONSIDERATION OF SIX FUNDAMENTALS, NAMELY: WEIGHT, SHAPE, STYLE, SLOPE, SIZE, AND SPACING.

A. UNIFORMITY OF WEIGHT REQUIRES THAT ALL STROKES IN ANY COMPOSITION HAVE THE SAME THICKNESS. IN PENCIL WORK, FREQUENT SHARPENING OF A SOFT PENCIL (H OR 2H) IS REQUIRED.

B. UNIFORMITY OF SHAPE REQUIRES THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE CORRECT LETTER SHAPES SO THAT THEY ARE ALWAYS MADE IN THE SAME WAY.

C. UNIFORMITY OF STYLE PREVENTS INDISCRIMINATE MIXING OF GOTHIC AND ROMAN LETTERS OR THE MIXING OF CAPITALS AND LOWER-CASE LETTERS.

D. UNIFORMITY OF SLOPE MEANS THAT THE STEMS AND AXES OF ALL LETTERS SHALL BE PARALLEL. THIS CAN BE ATTAINED ONLY THROUGH THOUGHTFUL PRACTICE AND THE USE OF SLOPE LINES FOR THE BEGINNER.

E. UNIFORMITY OF SIZE MAY BE ATTAINED BY USING GUIDE LINES AND MAKING SURE THAT THE LETTERS ACTUALLY TOUCH BOTH UPPER AND LOWER GUIDE LINES BUT DO NOT CROSS OVER THEM. THE WIDTH OF LETTERS LIKEWISE MUST BE UNIFORM.

F. UNIFORMITY OF SPACING REQUIRES THAT THE WHITE AREAS BETWEEN LETTERS APPEAR EQUAL AND RELATIVELY SMALL AS COMPARED WITH THE SIZE OF THE LETTER. THE WHITE AREAS BETWEEEN WORDS MUST ALSO BE EQUAL.
