V-Mart to start rehab assignment in Toledo Sunday

Anthony Fenech

3:39 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Without Victor Martinez in the Tigers lineup, "It's still pretty damn good," Terry Francona said.

"But when you have Victor being healthy," the Indians manager said before today's at Comerica Park, "It adds a dimension that scares other managers."

And that dimension appears to be a handful of days away from being added to the equation.

Martinez will embark on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, manager Brad Ausmus said. He is slated to play four games with

the Mud Hens.

"Then, assuming he feels fine and he's comfortable with where he is at the plate, we'll make a decision," Ausmus said.

Martinez ran and took batting practice again today, and Ausmus has been pleased with the progress his designated hitter has made in rehabilitation.

"There's no question he looks stronger," Ausmus said. "He looks stronger, he looks much better."

Ausmus said his batting practice sessions have been the strongest he has seen all year, including spring training.

Tigers option reliever Nesbitt to Toledo for Verlander's spot

Martinez, 36, has been on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation since May 19. He is hitting .215 with one home run and 15 RBIs this season.

"We need a healthy Victor Martinez's bat, not an ailing one," Ausmus said.

Martinez began his rehabilitation with a week off from baseball activities and has been running at full speed for the past week, Ausmus said.

He completed a number of running drills again today in leftfield.

Martinez's return could come late next week. It would be a boon for a Tigers lineup that has missed the left-handed power punch and professional at-bats the veteran

slugger provides.

"When it's Victor and (Miguel Cabrera) or whether it's J.D. Martinez or (Yoenis) Cespedes, getting through the bulk of that lineup is really tough," Francona said.

And if all goes well in Martinez's four-game minor league rehabilitation assignment, it will get tougher soon.

Rondon's rehab: Right-handed reliever Bruce Rondon is nearing the end of his rehabiltation assignment with Triple-A Toledo.

On Friday night, Rondon allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits in an inning of work. He struck out two and threw 13 of 16 pitches for strikes.

Ausmus said Rondon will pitch on Sunday against Pawtucket, "And then we'll make a decision at that point."

Rondon has been on the 15-day disabled list with right bicipital tendonitis since the start of the regular season.

Outdoors: Tigers' Wilson, Gose go fishing — they're hooked

Lydia Lohrer

2:35 a.m. EDT June 14, 2015

Detroit Tigers reliever Alex Wilson and centerfielder Anthony Gose are warming up for their upcoming game with the Cleveland Indians, Detroit's American League

Central Division foes.

Wilson fine-tunes his command of brown curly tail grubs while Gose catches smallies like he runs down fly balls in deep right-centerfield.

Their watery practice stadium is Lake St. Clair, and to their surprise, the score is Tigers 69, smallmouth zero.

It's the first time smallmouth fishing for either one. They're hooked. And shocked.

"It's unbelievable," says Gose as he pulls in a tubby smallmouth, smiles at it, then releases it gently.

Both of these young players have brought unexpected moments of glory to Detroit. What they didn't anticipate was the bounty of Michigan's wilderness.

Gose came to the Tigers from the Toronto Blue Jays, Wilson from the Boston Red Sox. But they are both outdoor country boys to the core. Impressing them isn't

easy.

"I grew up fishing for trout in the Sierra Nevadas and fished Alabama, too," says Gose, 24.

He hunts as well.

"I eat fish. Everything I kill, I eat," he adds.

Wilson's earliest memory is of driving to Kentucky for Thanksgiving with his grandparents.

"My grandfather was a quiet man, but when he spoke, you listened," he says. He taught me to fish, what to do when the bobber went down, how to use bluegills for

bait."

Today there are no bobbers. They're fishing with Gerry Gostenik, a consummate pro.

Gostenike explains: "There is no magic lure, but right now the mayflies are hatching. As they emerge, they're getting eaten. That brown curly tail grub — green

pumpkin — is like dynamite for two-three weeks during this time."

The cloudy skies, still water and right lure are just the right alchemy for bronze backs.

"It's one of the best fighting fish, if not the best, I've ever caught," Gose says.

Neither player would complain, but this day off between battles is precious.

"They get maybe 12, 13 days off the entire season," Gostenik says.

Gusto builds as they surpass 80 fish. Every smacking, writhing bass is a smile, a home run for the team.

"I love Michigan," Gose says. "There's a lot of outdoors that I didn't know about, a lot more going on here than I ever knew. That has made it really enjoyable to be

here."

Wilson, 28, thinks about his family. His grandfather who taught him to fish, Jim Wilson, died last year. "He loved his family. Nothing was more important," Wilson said.

"He followed baseball for me, for no other reason."

Wilson hopes to share his grandfather's legacy one day with his 6-month-old daughter and 2-year-old son. In the meantime, he plans to take another precious day off

and bring his wife, Kristin, fishing.

Gose thinks it's a great idea. "There's something special about this place."

Gostenik is not surprised. Though there is no magic lure, he knows what these Tiger cubs are learning — Pure Michigan is enchanting.

Troops scout sections of Iron Belle Trail

Michigan's Iron Belle Trail, which will stretch from Belle Isle Park on the Detroit River to Ironwood on the Wisconsin border in the Upper Peninsula with a hiking and a

bicycle route, is 60% complete, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops got to experience it.

As part of National Trails Day on June 6, troops across the state took part in hikes on the route. The event kicked off a summer of events along the Iron Belle.

Around 2,100 hikers from 130 scout troops participated, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The distance hiked ranged from a couple of

miles to more than 20 miles.

Boy Scout Troop 426 of Manchester took a 6-mile hike from Gregory to Stockbridge.

"It was fun," Boy Scout Chance Lowery told the DNR in a news release. "We saw a lot of wildlife — rabbits, a deer, lots of birds — and we saw a turtle laying eggs."

More Iron Belle events will be posted at michigantrails.org/events/calendar-events until Michigan Trails Week in September. For more information about the the trail,

Souvenir of the week: Tigers' Fourth of July cap

Steve Schrader

12:50 a.m. EDT June 14, 2015

This is the Detroit Tigers' version of the cap that all MLB teams will wear for games on the Fourth of July this year.

It features an Old English D over the U.S. flag.

In history, of course, the Stars and Stripes came out on top of the Old English, which is why we hold the holiday in the first place.

The caps are $37.99 at tigers.com, and net proceeds will go to the Welcome Back Veterans Fund.

Seidel: Verlander's impressive return a welcome sight

eff Seidel

10:50 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

It's hard to tell who breathe a bigger sigh of relief: Verlander, Ausmus or the fans

The fans in Comerica Park stood and applauded — finally, he's back! And the water fountain sprayed high into the air beyond centerfield wall, and an Eminem song

blared through the sound system, as Justin Verlander took the mound for the first time this season for the Detroit Tigers.

"I had some nervous energy," Verlander said. "I was anxious to get out there and back on the mound."

After missing the first third of the season with a triceps injury, Verlander had a solid, encouraging debut on Saturday afternoon. Verlander pitched five innings against

the Cleveland Indians, allowing two earned runs. When he left the game, the Tigers had a 3-2 lead.

"Overall, it felt pretty good," Verlander said. "Hopefully, my body and arm responds well, moving forward."

After Verlander left the game, the Tigers' bullpen blew it, letting that lead slip away. Verlander ended up with a no-decision as the Indians rallied for a 5-4 victory. But

Verlander was the story of this game.

"I'm glad to have him back," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He brings another energy. He lifts up the team. He lifts up the crowd. It was good to have him back.

It was a good first outing."

Verlander threw 87 pitches, 55 for strikes. He seemed to tire in the fifth inning, getting out of rhythm when the adrenaline started to kick in, but there were several

positive signs. Verlander was able to ramp it up, touching 97 miles per hour. And that velocity was encouraging to Ausmus. "I thought it was better than it was a year

ago," Ausmus said.

Page 19: Club: Detroit Tigers Level of Play: MAJ Position …mlb.mlb.com/documents/3/4/4/130566344/Reds_vs_Tigers_2wc...Club: Detroit Tigers Level of Play: MAJ Position Type: BB Ops As of:

Verlander had command of his fastball, walking just two batters and allowing three hits. And he was able to snap off his curve without a problem. "In the big picture, I

think today was pretty good," Verlander said.

All in all, it was an impressive beginning, a welcome sight for the Tigers, considering Verlander hasn't pitched in a big league game since he was injured March 27

while throwing in spring training. He had only two rehab starts, a forgettable one and a good one.

So there was no predicting what would happen in this game. Basically, his arm is still in spring training mode.

In the big picture, this was a critical moment for the Tigers. The Tigers need Verlander desperately, considering they have experienced so much inconsistency in the

starting rotation. David Price and Alfredo Simon have pitched well for the Tigers but you never know what you will get, at least this season, with Anibal Sanchez. And

Shane Greene is gone now, jettisoned to Toledo.

So there was plenty of drama at the beginning of this game. How would Verlander respond? Would he try to push it?

But that first inning couldn't have started out better for Verlander, thanks to a fine play by Ian Kinsler and a ridiculously fine play by Anthony Gose.

In the first inning, Michael Brantley crushed a ball into deep centerfield, which looked like a certain double. But Gose took a perfect route, looking like a rocket ship on

grass. He dove toward the warning track, doing a Superman impression, his entire body suspended in the air as he snagged the ball, completing a fantastic play.

Verlander stood on the infield with both hands raised. In the scorebook, it was three up, three down. An efficient inning. But those defensive plays were huge. Without

those plays, this start wouldn't have looked as impressive.

"I told Gose, 'You saved it for me,' " Verlander said.

In the fifth inning, Verlander got into a serious jam, loading the bases on two walks and a single. "That last inning, in the fifth, I tried to step on the gas a little bit and

fell out of rhythm a little bit and walked a couple of guys," Verlander said. "That's more effort than I've had to put in, yet."

On his 87th pitch of the day, Verlander threw a 96-m.p.h. fastball, which Carlos Santana crushed to rightfield, but it was caught by J.D. Martinez to end the threat.

Verlander was done for the day. And he showed a level of maturity to not push it and fight to stay in the game.

In the end, this was just the first step. He's back. Not all the way. But it was encouraging.

Tigers' Lobstein hits roadblock in recovery

Anthony Fenech

7:15 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Kyle Lobstein's road to recovery has stalled.

The Tigers' left-hander received a cortisone shot Friday and will take a few days off to see how his left shoulder responds to the treatment.

"That was more to just kind of get me over the hump, so to speak," Lobstein said. "My shoulder had been getting better and it was feeling good, but I just kinda

needed a little something extra to get me all the way back."

Lobstein has been on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left shoulder since May 24.

Victor Martinez to start rehab in Toledo on Sunday

Manager Brad Ausmus said Lobstein underwent another MRI exam recently, which looked the same, and the team is hoping the cortisone shot can knock out the

remaining inflammation.

Lobstein had thrown only once before the cortisone shot.

"I only played catch once and it just wasn't feeling 100%, so that's why we re-evaluated and decided to go the route with the cortisone injection," Lobstein said.

Tigers to decide on Rondon after Sunday rehab outing

Chris McCosky

3:10 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Detroit — Tigers reliever Bruce Rondon is scheduled to make his ninth rehab appearance Sunday. He will be with Triple A Toledo in Pawtucket.

His eighth appearance on Friday went much better than the stat line may have indicated.

"He threw well," manager Brad Ausmus said. "The linescore is very misleading."

Rondon threw 16 pitches, 13 strikes and was charged with two runs (one earned) and two hits with two strikeouts in one inning. One of the hits was a pop-up that fell

in.

Ausmus called it a step forward.

"He will have one more rehab outing Sunday and we will make a decision at that point," he said.

Rondon, who has given up 10 earned runs, 14 hits and four walks in 72/3 innings over eight appearances with Toledo, has been on the disabled list all season with

biceps tendinitis.

Injury updates

… Catcher Alex Avila (left knee) took batting practice on the field Saturday for the first time since last weekend in Chicago.

… Pitcher Kyle Lobstein (shoulder) had a cortisone shot to alleviate the persistent pain and swelling. "He had another MRI and it looked the same, not worse,"

Ausmus said. "They think the cortisone will knock the inflammation out."

… Ausmus had right-handed hitting Rajai Davis hitting leadoff and left-handed hitting Anthony Gose hitting ninth against a right-handed pitcher for the second straight

game. "I wouldn't read anything into it," Ausmus said. "I may have Gose leading off tomorrow."

Tigers' Martinez expected to begin rehab assignment

Chris McCosky

4:07 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Detroit — Barring any unforeseen setback, Victor Martinez's rehab assignment will commence Sunday afternoon in Pawtucket.

He is expected to join the Triple A Toledo Mud Hens there Saturday night, play Sunday, then travel with the team and play three more games Monday through

Wednesday in Syracuse.

"Initially he will play those four games and assuming he feels fine and he's comfortable where he is, we will make a decision (about reinstating him) following the

Syracuse series," manager Brad Ausmus said.

That was all pending how Martinez felt after his pre-game work Saturday. He took batting practice, as he has since he rejoined the team from Lakeland on Tuesday.

He also did running drills with strength and conditioning coach Chris Walter.

He seemed to come through it with no issues.

"There's no question he looks stronger," Ausmus said. "He's looked much better since he's been back."

Ausmus said Martinez has been hitting the ball better left-handed these past few days than he was at any point in spring training."

"We need a healthy Victor Martinez back, not an ailing Victor Martinez," Ausmus said.

Martinez, who had arthroscopic surgery to repair his left meniscus on Feb. 10, was put on the disabled list on May 19.

Tigers-Indians lineups: Verlander set to make debut

Staff Writer

2:39 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

For Justin Verlander and the Tigers, the wait is over.

The right-hander makes his season debut Saturday against the Indians at Comerica Park. First pitch is at 4:08 p.m.

Verlander has been out since late March with a right triceps strain. He hasn't pitched in a major league game since Game 2 of 2014 American League Division

Series.

Though the rotation is a bit in flux — starter Shane Greene was sent down to Toledo on Friday after another rough start — Verlander joins the Tigers as they appear

to be picking up steam. They've won four of their last five, including Friday night's 4-0 victory over the Indians to open the three-game series.

The Tigers entered Saturday's game in third place in the American League Central Division, 31/2 games behind the Royals.

Niyo: Verlander's return underscores how crucial he is to Tigers

John Niyo

Detroit — It's not how he starts, it's how he finishes.

Same goes for Justin Verlander's team, though, and that his season debut was spoiled by another bullpen disappointment seemed oddly fitting.

A reminder, in a way, of just how important his healthy return to the rotation would be for the Tigers, whose staying power in the AL Central division race remains

inextricably tied to their starting pitching.

The stronger Verlander gets, and the longer he lasts, the easier it'll be to ignore this team's obvious flaws and like the Tigers' chances of defending their title.

A day after the team's new staff ace, David Price, delivered another dominant nine-inning performance, Verlander offered up one that was decidedly less complete in

a 5-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians before a sellout crowd of 41,620 at Comerica Park.

But it was promising, nonetheless, as the 32-year-old former Cy Young winner came back from his first career stint on the disabled list — two months in exile due to

triceps tendinitis in his right arm — and showed some encouraging signs.

Good velocity. Decent command. And some uncommon restraint, too, as there was no real argument from Verlander — just a healthy discussion — when it came

time to decide his day was done after only five innings and 87 pitches.

Verlander had struggled with his control in the bottom of the fifth as he tried to turn up the heat, hitting 96-97 mph a handful of times as he worked his way in and out

of trouble. It was a mix of fatigue and mechanical trouble, he admitted later, but where the vintage Verlander model would've refused to hand over the keys, this one

knew it "kind of made sense."

Bigger picture

"Obviously, I would've liked to have gone deeper in the game, given us a better chance to win the game," said Verlander, who allowed three hits and two walks in his

five innings of work. "But I guess going through this whole process maybe I learned a little bit of patience, from all the doctors and trainers and everybody telling me

you have to be cautious in this situation and not push yourself too much, which kind of goes against everything that I've always done."

What he has always done is not what matters now, of course. What he can do for this team is, which is why the Tigers have smartly taken the long view with

Verlander's health this spring.

That's something the team admittedly hasn't done all that well with others, including Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, the past few years. And it's something

Verlander struggled with a year ago as he came back from an offseason core muscle surgery.

But now "he's aware," manager Brad Ausmus says, "that injuries are a part of life. And sometimes rather than pushing your way through something, or being kind of

a bull in a china shop, you have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I think he's understanding that a little bit more now."

DETROIT NEWS

Verlander commends Gose on catch of the day

If he was upset at the way Saturday's game ended, it'd be understandable, too, as the lead he left behind didn't last long.

Detroit's bullpen ERA in the month of June is now a robust 5.47 after Saturday's effort, with Blaine Hardy the surprising culprit this time. He'd allowed just one earned

run in his last 21 outings, but after coming on to start the sixth against the lefty-dominated Indians lineup, Hardy was hit hard and a 3-2 lead quickly became a 4-3

deficit. An eighth-inning run, courtesy of Ian Krol and Al Aburquerque proved just as costly, as a pair of late-inning threats by the Tigers produced one run too few.

But that's nothing new for this team, or for Verlander, who right off the hop was greeted by an early reminder of something that is different from a year ago: The

Tigers' vastly-improved defense.

A nifty play by Ian Kinsler robbed Jason Kipnis of a leadoff single in the first inning. And two batters later, Verlander watched Anthony Gose make a terrific diving

grab in center field to deny Michael Brantley of an extra-base hit.

Gose had joked with Verlander during batting practice earlier in the week, telling him he was saving a highlight-reel catch for his debut.

"And then he goes and makes a spectacular play in the first, so I had to give him props for that," said Verlander, who threw both arms in the air to celebrate then

waited for Gose at the top of the dugout steps to say a proper thanks.

As Ausmus noted before the game, "Balls are being caught that weren't being caught last year."

There was, however, no catching the ball Carlos Santana launched leading off the fourth, a 94-mph fastball he dropped into the right-field seats to cut the lead to 2-1.

For Santana, that was his sixth homer off Verlander in 46 career at-bats. And for Verlander, it certainly wasn't the only hard-hit ball he allowed Saturday.

But it was a positive sign, nonetheless, as he was sitting 93-94 mph on the stadium radar gun for much of the game, averaging 93.7 with his fastball.

"I thought his velocity was good," Ausmus said. "I thought it was better than it was a year ago."

Throwing heat

It was, and if it can stay that way, or get even better yet, Verlander, just might be able to get back some of that mojo that was missing last year, when he finished with

the fifth-worst ERA (4.54) in the AL among qualifying starters.

Verlander, whose fastball averaged 93.1 mph in 2014, struck out only two in five innings Saturday, and there weren't many whiffs. But it sure looked — and felt — a

bit better than expected for a guy whose last outing came in a Jurassic Park-themed uniform against the Indians' Triple-A affiliate.

"It was nice to see it coming out pretty good there, especially when I haven't had a lot of opportunity to build arm strength and really hit my stride," said Verlander,

who has been idled since late March but still could make as many as 20 starts if he stays healthy. "I basically condensed spring training into a (simulation) game and

two starts.

"So when you think about it like that, it takes a little while hit your midseason form and get your arm in shape to throw 115 pitches and be able to feel good. I think

today was a very key step, and it was a good sign."

And while Saturday was an important first step, Sunday is another, as he gauges how the arm responds.

"I would say it's a big day," Verlander agreed.

But he sounded confident it will respond, "and I would expect it to be better and better every time," he said.

And before long, he expects it'll be "back to business as usual."

For the Tigers, that certainly would be good for business.

Verlander commends Gose on catch of the day

Chris McCosky

9:36 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Detroit – A couple of days ago, Justin Verlander was in the outfield shagging fly balls in batting practice. Anthony Gose was out there, too.

Let Verlander pick up the story from there.

"Gose made a nice play while we were shagging fly balls and he said, 'Hey Ver, I'm saving that one for you in the game,'" he said.

Gose is a man of his word.

In the first inning of Verlander's first start of the season Saturday, Gose stole at least a triple from Indians' Michael Brantley. He was playing straight-away center field

and a little bit in.

Brantley hit a shot to the right-field side of center. Gose had to run a long way toward the track and made a remarkable diving catch with his back to the infield.

"I had to give him props for that," Verlander said. "He said he was going to save it for me."

Gose mostly shrugged it off.

"I made a catch and he said 'thank you,'" he said. "Got to keep playing the game."

He was asked if he realized just how good a catch that was.

"It was a good catch," he said.

Verlander just shook his head.

"He never ceases to amaze me out there," he said.

The Tigers made several stellar defensive plays Saturday. The first batter Verlander faced, Jason Kipnis, hit a hard ground ball between first and second. Second

baseman Ian Kinsler had to go far to his left to snag it and throw Kinsler out.

In the sixth, right-fielder J.D. Martinez robbed Brandon Moss of extra bases with a lunging catch running toward center.

In the eighth, left-fielder Yoenis Cespedes first made a deft running catch on a shallow fly ball by Michael Bourn, and then, while still running at full speed, fired a

seed to second to double off Yan Gomes.

"I think it's big," Martinez said. "I take a lot of pride in it. I know a lot of guys take a lot of pride in it, as well. I feel like if you're out there and you can save a run, it's

just as good as hitting a run in.

"Anytime you can go out there and give your pitcher a little bit more confidence out there, I think it helps. It goes a long way."

Tigers bullpen wastes Verlander's solid debut in loss

Chris McCosky

9:23 p.m. EDT June 13, 2015

Detroit — The narrow view is that it was another frustrating loss.

Not only did the bullpen give away a 3-2 lead, but the Tigers also stranded the tying run on second base in the eighth inning and on third base with one out in the

ninth.

From that perspective, the 5-4 loss to the Indians was kick in the pants.

The broader view is more encouraging.

Justin Verlander is back.

"He brings a lot of energy," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He lifts up the team. He lifts up the crowd. This was a real good first step."

A sellout crowd of 41,620 turned out to see the long-awaited season debut. Verlander, who had been out with a strained right triceps, pitched five innings, allowed

two runs and three hits. He struck out two and walked two and left with a 3-2 lead.

"I would have liked to go deeper in the game and give us a better chance to win," Verlander said. "But overall I felt pretty good. It was nice to get back out there, first

and foremost."

He wound up throwing 87 pitches (55 strikes). He used primarily three pitches — a four-seam fastball that stayed mostly between 92 and 94 mph, a curveball that

was especially sharp through the early innings, and a change-up. He threw very few sliders against the predominantly left-handed Indians lineup.

The only loud hit he allowed was a long home run to right field by Carlos Santana in the fourth.

"He did a nice job, especially for his first day back on the mound in a big league game," Ausmus said. "I thought he was strong. He got slightly tired at the end, but

nothing concerning."

DETROIT NEWS

Tigers' Martinez expected to begin rehab assignment

In the fifth inning, he flashed some of the old Verlander heat, but it was tempered with his new-found sagacity.

"I think he's aware, with this being the first time he's been on the DL, that injuries are actually a part of life," Ausmus said. "And sometimes, rather than forcing your

way through something like a bull in a china shop, sometimes you need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

"He is understanding that a little more now."

The Tigers had just taken a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Rajai Davis, who tripled and scored in the first, doubled home Jose Iglesias. To that point, Verlander

had allowed two hits and no walks.

But with one out in the fifth, he walked rookie Giovanny Urshela and gave up a single to Michael Bourn. That's when the old Verlander showed up. He started dialing

up his fastball to 95, 96, even 97 mph.

"He reached back for a little extra velocity when he needed to," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "That's kind of been his MO."

It had mixed results. Good to see the velocity, but he walked Mike Aviles and gave up a sacrifice fly to Jason Kipnis.

Page 23: Club: Detroit Tigers Level of Play: MAJ Position …mlb.mlb.com/documents/3/4/4/130566344/Reds_vs_Tigers_2wc...Club: Detroit Tigers Level of Play: MAJ Position Type: BB Ops As of:

"When I tried to step on the gas a little, I fell out of rhythm and I walked a couple guys, Verlander said. "That's more effort than I've had to put in to anything yet, so it

kind of made sense why the rhythm wasn't there."

Against the last three batters he faced, Verlander threw six fastballs at 95 mph or faster. He was able to get out of the inning, getting Santana to line out to right.

"I exerted more energy than I have yet in my rehab," Verlander said. "I wouldn't say I was completely tired, but I could tell I was putting more into it than I had at any

point yet…It was nice to see the ball come out of my hand like that, but I haven't done it in a while, so mechanically and the feel of it wasn't quite there."

Verlander, Ausmus and pitching coach Jeff Jones had a good discussion after the fifth and mutually agreed that his day was done. Verlander of old would have put

up more of a fuss.

"Through this whole process, maybe I have learned a little bit of patience," he said with a wry smile. "The doctors and trainers have been telling me, you have to be

cautious and not push yourself too much — which goes against what I have always done."

Things went quickly downhill once Verlander left, though.

The Indians treated left-handed reliever Blaine Hardy like a substitute teacher. Michael Brantley singled sharply. Brandon Moss hit a screaming liner that J.D.

Martinez flagged down in right-center.

Then David Murphy whacked a triple to right-center.

Alex Wilson came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to Yan Gomes to make it 4-3.

"Hardy has been so good lately," Ausmus said. "This was just an off-day."

The Indians tacked on what became the winning run in the eighth. Ian Krol, recalled from Toledo on Friday, hit Murphy with one out. Al Alburquerque came on and

was greeted by an RBI double from Yan Gomes.

Only an outstanding defensive play by Yoenis Cespedes kept it from being worse. He made a excellent running catch on a shallow fly ball then made a strong snap

throw to second to double up Gomes.

The Tigers, though, went down fighting.

After J.D. Martinez homered into the center-field shrubbery off Bryan Shaw to make it 5-4 in the eighth, Iglesias' two-out single chased Shaw. Francona brought in

closer Cody Allen.

Anthony Gose, who made a spectacular diving catch in the first inning, singled to bring the tying run to second. Davis struck out to end the threat.

In the ninth, Miguel Cabrera walked with one out and went to third on a single by Cespedes.

Martinez, though, bounced the first pitch to short for a game-ending double play.

Bittersweet day for the Tigers.

"We're really grateful to have (Verlander) back," Martinez said. "It just looked like he was out there and he was throwing strikes, getting ahead of guys and making

good pitches when he needed to. It was just unfortunate we couldn't get that win for him today.

"But I think he pitched really well and I'm excited for the future, for the rest of the season."

Green: Baseball society cherishes game's young stars

Jerry Green

12:25 a.m. EDT June 14, 2015

Detroit — Once, way back when, Eddie Lake played shortstop for the Tigers in Briggs Stadium. He was a diminutive ballplayer, just a scrawny 5-foot-7, and he joined

the Tigers in 1946 in a trade away of hulking Rudy York with the Red Sox.

Lake wore No. 7 with the Olde English D covering his heart for five ordinary seasons.

But then Lake was an ordinary ballplayer. Nondescript would be an apt adjective. Lake managed to hit a total of 39 home runs in his 11 big league seasons. His

batting average lifetime was .231.

He did very little to be immortalized as a major league ballplayer. But that is the perverse reason Eddie Lake has been immortalized in Detroit. Because he was

ordinary, because he played with flair and with histrionics during a post-World War II period in Detroit — the wartime Arsenal of Democracy.

So it is that a group of baseball addicts — ordinary men and women — meet monthly in the gab sessions of the Eddie Lake Society.

The Eddie Lake Society was the brainchild of the late News columnist Joe Falls as a way to celebrate baseball in Detroit.

Columnist's inspiration

The other day, 71 Eddie Lakers met in Warren to listen to Hall of Fame-bound Tom Gage, former News baseball writer, discuss his passion.

Funny thing, most of those baseball addicts were bald or gray ancients, some crotchety. I fit right in. The common thread was that we all love baseball.

Luncheon with the Eddie Lakers started my mind whirling — about the sport, the game, its place in America as the erstwhile National Pastime.

The kids of today — the majority of them, supposedly — believe that baseball is a game for old-timers. They regard it as a sport that appeals mostly to fossils. Guilty!

The kids maintain that baseball is dying. That it is slow and time consuming. That it is dull and boring.

And with the mind spin, I smiled inwardly — what a load of bunkum that is.

Seventy years after Eddie Lake played, Major League Baseball is blessed with the largest assemblage of brilliant young players in personal memory. Some are

already stars, the others are destined for stardom.

Bryce Harper. Kris Bryant. Joc Pederson. Mike Trout. Giancarlo Stanton. Anthony Rizzo. Jose Iglesias. Anthony Gose. Yasail Puig. Jose Altuve. Jean Segura. Wil

Myers. Andrelton Simmons. Freddie Freeman. Jorge Soler.

And I'm just counting position players among this galaxy.

Every one of them is 25 years old or younger. Everyone plays with flair and spirit and remarkable skills.

Harper is the king of the newbies — the pacesetter. The top grabber of headlines and controversy.

At 22, Harper is already in his fourth major league season with the Nationals. He brought a feisty character to MLB and a powerful bat. He has hit 21 home runs this

year behind only the mighty Stanton for the Miami Marlins. This is Harper's breakout season after decent true stats in his previous seasons.

His four-year total is 76 home runs.

That figure compares, according to those geeks who keep track of such things, as a home-run total higher Henry Aaron's and Barry Bonds' at age 22.

The sabremetricians at Fangraphs.com inform avid stats freaks that Harper has the top WAR in the majors in the two months plus of 2015 baseball.

WAR, you know, is wins above replacement — which is an accumulation of a variety of stats, blended into one. It squeezes in defensive attributes. It does not take

into account the temper tantrums, hangovers, nocturnal carousing or bouts of diarrhea of any athlete, including Mike Trout.

Harper's got the stuff

What Harper brings to Major League Baseball is personality.

Already Harper has captivated New York — and the media rumor quacks there have him ticketed as joining the Yankees when he attains free agency. Which is only

in 2019.

Earlier this season, Harper cajoled fans in Yankee Stadium by appearing selfie photos with citizens armed with mobile phones.

"The fans were going crazy out there," Harper said the other night in an interview on the MLB TV channel, as documented in his hometown Washington Post. "And

they were taking these selfies and I was looking up at them, smiling and thumbs up and stuff, and I was, like, you know what, I'm going over there and take a selfie

with one of their phones.

"It's a lot of fun, being able to enjoy it with the fans a little bit. They cheer me all night long."

Harper this season has taken over the position of baseball's most celebrated young player from Mike Trout. Trout, at 23, already has a most valuable player trophy in

his collection It was Trout, who made the sabremetricians drool in his rookie season with the Angels in 2012.

Trout plays with greater all-around skills than Harper, due to his defense. Indeed, he made this grizzled media warrior declare him the most skillful player to enter

baseball since Willie Mays some 60 years earlier because of versatility. Willie — or the under-appreciated and gallant Roberto Clemente.

Among the others, Kris Bryant, at 23, has received plaudits as a rookie third baseman with the Cubs. Bryant, along with teammate Rizzo, was fun to watch – and stir

comments – this past week when the Cubs played the Tigers at Comerica Park.

The flamboyant Puig, 24, certainly has been a marvelous – if uncontrolled -- athlete with the Dodgers. And right now, Joc Pederson, at 23, has been a power force

out there in Los Angeles with the Dodgers – pretty much playing center field in the image of a young Duke Snider.

And then there is the gigantic Giancarlo Stanton, at 25, baseball's premier slugger. Stanton stands at 6 feet 6 inches, nearly a foot taller than the late Eddie Lake.

Giancarlo's home runs ride with memories of the long-range shots of Mickey Mantle, and before that, of Babe Ruth. Stanton leads the majors with 22 homers (again

before Saturday's game). He is the National League's reigning home-run champion, 37 last year before he was felled by a pitch that hit shattered his face.

Amid considerable debate, Stanton stayed with the lowly Marlins with a contract worth a crazy $325 million for 13 seasons. He is signed through 2027. Crazy.

And before the current season is over, Stanton is likely to hit more home runs in a single year than Eddie Lake did lifetime.

The young ballplayers are skilled and appreciated — and they are in the process of rescuing their sport.

But for those of us crusty, ancient curmudgeons — we cherish memories of diminutive Eddie Lake.
