THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joy-ful Noise was a contempo-rary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young peo-ple, led spiritually and musi-cally by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social

media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who sup-ported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various commit-tees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and un-wind. But fences also may lead to disputes with neighbors if installation is not carried out with etiquette. Always place the fence within your property lines, which can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbors of your intention to erect a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outward to the street and to neighbors’ yards. In ad-dition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighborhood eyesore that irks your neighbors.

DID YOU KNOW?

POWER TOOL SAFETY TIPSPower tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improve-ment projects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. Accord-ing to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of in-juries. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Here’s how:• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use.• Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condi-tion.• Use the right tool for the job.• Always wear eye protec-tion, such as safety glasses or goggles. • Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to pro-tect hands.• Consider the use of ear-plugs or earmuffs with loud power tools.• Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable va-pors, dust or construction materials.• Always check that wires are kept away from blades.• Maintain a tight grip on a tool.

• Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance.

• Pay attention when working with any power tool.

• Only use attachments specifically recommended for the power tools and en-

sure proper installation.

• Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.

• Routinely inspect tools for damage.

• Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.

REDUCE PESTICIDE POLLUTION AT HOMECommercial farms are often blamed for the vast array of contaminants that fi nd their way into water supplies and the soil itself. But home-gardening enthusiasts may also be contaminating water and soil through the use of pesticides.

Data from Green-NetWorld, an environmental advocacy group, indicates Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Pesticide use is a pro-lifi c problem. More than 100 active pesticide ingredients are suspected of causing cancer, gene mutations and birth defects. In addition, a growing list of pesticides may disrupt the immune and endocrine systems and have long-term impacts on infants and young chil-dren. Research indicates that many pests targeted

by pesticides will eventually develop resistance to these pesticides, rendering the chemicals useless.

One way to reduce chemical pollution at home is to fi nd alternatives to pesticides.

• Investigate reduced-risk pesticides. The United States Environmental Protection Agency is examining pesti-cides that pose less risk to humans and the environ-ment than existing pesti-cides. Homeowners con-cerned about pesticides can visit www.epa.gov to learn more about reduced-risk pesticides.

• Use biopesticides. Biologi-cal products, also known as biopesticides, can play a role in a more sustainable food chain. These control agents include fungi, bacteria or viruses and can be applied

like chemical pesticides but do not leave toxic residues. Furthermore, they are rela-tively inexpensive to pro-duce.

• Look to the kitchen. Dish soap can be an eff ective pest killer. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray around the exterior of your house and on plants that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small fl ying insects. Catnip is another natural pesticide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosqui-toes.

• Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt on the leaves of plants in the garden can keep away animals, such as deer or groundhogs, that would otherwise devour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs and snails.

Before homeowners turn to chemical pesticide applica-tions, they can explore many natural remedies to keep un-wanted pests at bay.

DID YOU KNOW? Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, biosolids are carefully treated and monitored residuals formed at sewage treatment facilities. They may be recycled into fertilizers to stimulate plant growth. Biosolids may help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Biosolids can be safe to use, but homeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have been treated to reduce the bacterial content and are approved for use in production agriculture. Home gardeners may want to avoid bio-solids in vegetable gardens because of the potential for heavy metal content seeping into the produce.

DID YOU KNOW? While it might be tempt-ing to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is pos-sible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause signifi -cant damage to the lawn. Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that expo-sure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suff er from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeown-ers should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.

DID YOU KNOW? Feng shui is the practice of arranging a home or of- ce environment so energy ows gently and smoothly throughout the building. Many homeowners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environment that is free of stress. The basis for feng shui is that everything in a given environment has an energy known as “chi.” Proponents of feng shui believe chi not only ows through the body but also through the

environment. When a home environment negatively af-fects this ow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to health problems, nancial troubles or domestic strife. This is why feng shui adher-ents do not allow clutter to accumulate in their homes, as they feel clutter can stag-nate energy ow. In addi-tion, feng shui adherents avoid homes with long, dark hallways or poorly lit stair-cases, as they feel such areas negatively a ect the ow of energy in a home.

HOW TO HANDLE WEED GROWTHHomeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens know just how problematic weeds can be. Weeds can make otherwise well-manicured and thriving lawns and gardens appear unhealthy and ill-kempt. But homeowners don’t have to sit back and accept weeds as an inevitable byproduct of warm weather. The fol-lowing are a handful of ways homeowners can handle weed growth so all their hard work is not masked by unwelcome weeds.

• Pull weeds after watering. It might seem odd to water weeds, but watering weeds

can actually make it easier to pull them out so they never return. When you pull weeds from soggy soil, you can more easily pull weeds’ entire root system from the ground. That means you aren’t just pulling the stems and leaves, but the entire weed from the ground.

• Lay mulch. Mulch can bene t a garden in many ways, not the least of which is helping to prevent the growth of weeds. Mulch pre-vents sunlight from reaching weed seeds, helping to pre-vent the growth of weeds before they even appear to cause you headaches. In addition, mulch helps soil retain moisture, which ben-e ts plants as summer tem-peratures rise.

• Lay landscape fabric. Homeowners who want to do more than mulch can lay landscape fabric in their gardens as well. Landscape fabric will work in much the same way as mulch, block-ing sunlight from reaching weed seeds and therefore preventing the weed seeds from germinating. When lay-ing landscape fabric, simply cut holes in the fabric where the plants will be, lay the fabric down and then cover the fabric with mulch.

• Plant strategically. How you plant also can help defeat weeds before they ever ap-pear. Speak with your land-scaper or a local lawn and garden professional before planting, asking if it’s possi-

ble to plant particular plants close together to prevent weed growth. Plants that are planted in close proxim-ity to one another will block sunlight from reaching the soil, which will make it more di cult for weed seeds to germinate.

Weeds are a formidable and unwelcome foe to home-owners who take pride in their lawns and gardens. But there are several ways to combat existing weed in-festations and prevent their return in the future.

PRICED atHomeowners hoping to ex-pand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the first they will have to make is which direc-tion to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, in-creasing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.

Professionals urge prospec-tive remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each

expansion option, including which direction to build.

One of the first consider-ations is land space. Build-ing horizontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another feature. Proximity to neigh-bors and the dimensions of your property will also help to determine if expanding horizontally is a good idea.

Building codes and neighborhood re-quirements also must be considered before making any renovations. Some municipalities may have rules in place that govern renova-

tions. Add-ons may not be allowed to exceed certain height limits, nor may struc-tures be built within a cer-tain number of feet of prop-erty lines.

Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to contend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the prem-ises at a certain point. Also, extensive renovation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether it’s to shore up the structure, clean up after the renova-tion or repair ceilings, dry-wall and other components where levels meet.

It may seem easier to ex-

pand outward, but this requires laying additional foundation for the new building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be necessary if your home

is structurally sound and can bear the weight of the addition.

Building out typically in-volves the least disruption to your life and the existing space. Homeowners should keep in mind that any reno-

vation will require permits or variances. In addition, if the project increases the value of the home, home in-surance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin. Homeowners need to consider whether to

build up or out when they add on to homes.

Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier life-style. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon trans-form into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several win-dows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their energy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggish-ness, which can compro-mise workout routines. In addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unneces-sary items that will only be a distractions during work-outs. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mir-ror, which can help men and women focus on their move-ments and ensure they are performing exercises cor-rectly. Homeowners build-ing a home gym also should consider fi nding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on ellipti-cal machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeowners should con-nect a streaming device to

the television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to fi nd space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a workout.

WATERING TIPS TO PRODUCE HEALTHY LAWNSSummer is a season for land-scaping, and homeowners who live in regions that get especially hot in the sum-mertime often worry that their lawns won’t make it through the dog days of summer looking lush. But lawns don’t have to suc-cumb to the sizzling summer sun. Oftentimes, the right watering strategies can help homeowners nurse their lawns through the hottest months of the year, ensuring the lawns make it to autumn looking as green as they did back at the height of spring.

• Reconsider when you’re watering. Come summer-time, homeowners may want a glass of water at high noon, when temperatures seem to be at their hottest. But you and your lawn are different, so the best time to satiate your thirst is not necessarily the best time to

water your lawn. Watering in the middle of the day is often ineffective, as water tends to evaporate quickly in the afternoons when tempera-tures are peaking. Nighttime watering can contribute to the growth of fungus, which can create an entirely new set of headaches for home-owners. Morning watering sessions tend to be most ef-fective during the summer-time, as temperatures tend to be cooler in the morning, leading to less evaporation. Less evaporation means all that watering isn’t going to waste.

• Reconsider your sprinkler. If you can’t afford an in-ground irrigation system, which many landscaping professionals feel is the most effective and efficient way to water a lawn, then you likely will rely on a sprinkler to keep your lawn looking

lush through the summer months. When choosing a sprinkler, look for one that shoots water out horizon-tally as opposed to vertically. A vertical sprinkler system is more vulnerable to wind and evaporation than one that shoots water out hori-zontally, so make sure your sprinkler system is sending water into your lawn and not into summer breezes.

• Avoid overwatering. How much water your lawn needs in the summertime depends on a host of factors, includ-ing where you live and how often rain falls in that region. Overwatering can promote the growth of fungus and adversely affect your lawn’s root system, making it diffi-cult for roots to grow deep. Speak with a local landscap-ing professional to deter-mine how often you should water your lawn each week.

• Strategically position your sprinklers. When choosing where to put down your sprinklers, hook them up to your hose, turn them on and then watch to see where the water is going. Areas that exposed to sun are most in need of water, so make sure the bulk of your water isn’t going to shaded areas beneath trees. In ad-dition, make sure you aren’t wasting water on sidewalks, patios and driveways. Sprin-klers should be positioned so none of the water they’re shooting out is landing on surfaces that don’t need water. It sounds simple, but too often homeowners drop their sprinklers down, turn them on and then walk away without waiting to see

where the water is landing. Position sprinklers or adjust sprinkler heads so all the wa-ter is landing on your lawn.

Keeping a lawn lush and green at the height of sum-mer requires homeowners to adopt effective strategies. Such a strategies can make the difference between a lush landscape and one that succumbs to summer heat.

Poorly placed sprinklers that shoot water out onto driveways and other surfaces that do not need water can rob a lawn of water it desperately needs when temperatures climb in the summertime.

or visit our website at:www.saratoganursingcenter.com Renting out a home is a

great way for homeowners to earn some extra income. Some homeowners rent their homes in an attempt to wait out a sagging hous-ing market, while others see renting their homes as a long-term commitment to their fi nancial futures.

Being a landlord has its advantages and disadvan-tages, and the decision to rent out a home is one that homeowners should not take lightly. The follow-ing are a handful of factors homeowners should con-sider as they try to decide if renting out their homes is the right move for them.

Time

Being a landlord is a 24/7/365 commitment, as tenants will expect their landlords to be on call at all times. Tenants will call their landlords should plumb-ing fi xtures suddenly burst in the middle of the night, and landlords must be avail-able to answer such calls no matter how inconvenient they become. If you are not willing or able to devote the time necessary to tend to tenant needs, then being a landlord may not be for you.

Maintenance

Whereas homeowners may be able to delay making certain repairs in the homes

where they lay their heads, such a luxury is not aff ord-ed when they are renting out their other properties. Repairs and maintenance of rental properties cannot be put on the back burner while you save money to fi x them. In addition, if even minor repairs typically pose a problem for you, you may soon discover that hiring a handyman or discounting rent for live-in supers is cut-ting into your profi ts or mak-ing it diffi cult to pay bills. Before deciding to rent out your home, determine the potential costs of maintain-ing a second property and use that information to de-cide if renting the property is a sound fi nancial invest-ment or one that might put you in the red.

Tenants

Many people who have rented have a horror story or two about an absentee or indiff erent landlord, but landlords also have their own such stories about nightmare tenants. When mulling whether or not to rent out your home, con-sider who your prospective tenants will be and if your community will supply the steady stream of renters you will need to pay your mortgage and bills without jeopardizing your fi nances. The last things fi rst-time or

even experienced landlords want are tenants who can-not pay their rent and/or those who are disrespectful of their neighbors and their landlords, so it’s best to give ample consideration to your potential pool of renters before deciding to rent out your home.

Help

Many landlords work with local real estate agencies or property management fi rms who will do much of the leg-work with regard to fi nding tenants and maintaining properties. Research the cost of such help to deter-mine if you can aff ord it and still make renting your home fi nancially viable.

Attorney fees are another cost prospective landlords must consider. Landlord-tenant laws can be diffi cult to decipher for fi rst-time landlords, so it helps to have an attorney who can help you decipher these laws and how they should govern your actions as a landlord. But attorneys are not inex-pensive, and they must be worked into your budget as well.

Renting a home is a great way to earn extra income, but homeowners must con-sider a host of factors before putting their homes up for rent.

DID YOU KNOW? Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can af-fect how prospective buyers view their automobiles. For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer war-ranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes fi rst. That may make a vehicle less at-tractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking price of the vehicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, in-cluding new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their preowned vehicle as quick-ly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their vehicles and showcase the service re-cords to prospective buyers. If not, sellers should be fl ex-ible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know that signifi cant mainte-nance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.

AGING AND DRIVINGGetting behind the wheel and enjoying the freedom to travel is a luxury few are anx-ious to abandon. But there comes a time in nearly every person’s life when he or she must take inventory of his or her driving and assess if that next joy ride is a safe and smart decision.Driving may help older adults remain independent and mobile, but the chance for a motor vehicle acci-dent increases as one ages. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says fatal crash rates per mile traveled increase starting at age 75 and increase notably after age 80. This is largely due to increased susceptibility to injury and medical compli-cations among older driv-ers rather than an increased tendency to get into crash-es. Road accidents tend to increase around a person’s 65th birthday.Authorities in Canada re-quire physicians to warn patients if the doctors have

any concerns about their pa-tients’ ability to drive. Doc-tors also must report these concerns. There are no such requirements in the United States, where individual drivers and families must use their own judgement to decide if it is still safe for a particular person to be on the road.

Minor fender benders, traffi c citations, trouble remem-bering directions or fre-quently visited stores, may be early indications that a driver is no longer at his or her best behind the wheel. Some experts say that fami-lies should institute driving directives, much in the way a person would spell out medical desires or end-of-life plans. This way, when the time comes to assess driving ability, the conversation al-ready has been started.

There is no set age when a person’s keys should be tak-en away, as aging does not guarantee drivers’ abilities will decline. In fact, there are many things people can do to prolong their time on the road.

• Get routine vision and hearing checks. These ex-aminations will help to de-termine your fi tness to be on the road and shed light on any issues that need to be addressed. Those who wear contact lenses or glasses

may need to update their prescriptions.

• Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can aff ect the body in many ways, including re-ducing reaction time. Fall-ing asleep while driving can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists.

• Know your medications. Certain medications can make you drowsy, so read the labels so you know not to drive while taking them. Speak with your doctor to see if there are any substi-tutes that won’t aff ect your performance behind the wheel.

• Recognize your limitations. You may not like driving at night or in inclement weath-er. Stick to driving when you feel most comfortable.

• Enroll in a refresher course. Sign up for a defensive driv-ing course to review your driving skills. Not only may it make you safer on the road,

but it also may help reduce your insurance rates.

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to quit driving right away. Recognize the signs of a decline in driving ability and fi gure out how long it is safe to remain be-hind the wheel.
