Key Issues - Sixth formTo ensure viability of sixth

form we must work in partnership to maintain subject offer and manage group sizes.

We have worked together with MCT over the last two years to save post 16 education at our schools.

We are making progress together as the Forest Heath 6th Form

But issues remain that need to be solved:

• We cannot share all of our teaching.

• Logistics aren’t perfect. Some students have to leave lessons early and some arrive late.

• We need to ensure a fair time allocation. Currently some students get 8 hour taught time a fortnight and some 10 ½.

Key Issues - Extracurricular provision

It is clearly a good thing for students to partake of extracurricular and enrichment activities outside of the commitment to normal lessons

For some students structure and encouragement to do homework would be beneficial.

We have some very good provision– Sport & fixtures– Drama, productions

and Glee– Art club– Rockestra– GCSE RE– AS Archaeology

When we become a new school in September 2012 we want more opportunities and uptake by our students.

Key Issues – parental contact

We are looking for ways to support parents in becoming more involved in the education of their students.

How can we support parents to have access to teachers to allow a meaningful conversation as and when issues arise, not wait until a parents evening.

There is a successful model from another school which has led to a significant improvement in parent – teacher dialogue and parent contact over the year.

This allows time on a 8.30 – 9.30 slot for parents to make an appointment to see any teacher.

A possible timetable for a year 7-11 student

Sixth Form

• 6th form lessons start at 9.30 in Newmarket.

• A bus will leave Newmarket at 8.30 every day for 6th form lessons at Mildenhall.

• 6th form period 5 is 90 minutes long• Each 6th form subject will have one 2

hour session and one 2 ½ hour session a week. So total teaching time will be 9 hours per fortnight.

• Each session will be divided into two lessons if teaching is shared.

• Transport at start and end of day and at lunchtime.

• Each 6th form subject will have one morning and one afternoon session per week.

Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

• All lessons are 60 minutes long.• 20 minute tutor time, 20 minute

break, 35 minute lunchtimes• Tutor time after period 1 (9.30 –

9.50)• Wednesdays start at 9.30 all other

days at 8.30• Monday and Friday finish at 2.45• Wednesday, Tuesday (and /) or

Thursday finish at 3.45

Period 6

• A formal 60 minute period 6 at the end of the day on Tuesday (and /) or Thursday

• There will be options for extracurricular and enrichment activities or study support– Extracurricular e.g. hockey team,

archaeology, chess club– Enrichment e.g. geography club, forge

metalwork– Study support e.g. homework club, BTEC

Week 1• Parent teacher meetings can be booked

by parents or teachers in the 8.30 – 9.30 slot

• The question is whether this can replace parents’ evenings or whether we can run a “mixed economy” of the Wednesday appointment system alongside parents’ evenings.

Week 2• Challenge Wednesday – extended

learning day• Faculty and theme based learning.

• Would students change Enrichments, termly or half termly (carousel)– I think a termly options process would

be about right.• Would different starts affect the bussing

arrangements?– I don’t think that will be a problem.

Few students or indeed constraints on times

• Maximum amount of students for period 6? Will they have an option block style choice so they have to select some academic subjects too? Is there a minimum number to run a viable extension class?– Clearly there will be minimum and

maximum numbers, but to some extent this will be staffing and activity dependent. There will be two blocks Tuesday and Thursday.

• Will this limit the number of revision classes students can attend/teachers can offer. – Revision classes should be part of the

period 6 offer.• Three lessons after lunch for KS3 – too

much?– On Wednesday week 1 only. How can

we manage that? A 10 minute break and a 50 minute period 5?

• Will we be doing detentions; – Yes probably Tues and Thurs in period

6.

FAQ

• What if Science need to see a student for BTEC catch-up in study support and they want to do sport?– They might need to be directed. They might

be able to choose two sessions.• What sanctions are there for absence?

– The same as there are for any other lesson.• Will there be funding or can we charge

students? Can the Extension activities be off-site (as a trip)?– Trips would be welcome but in these harsh

financial times all costs will need to be paid for by students.

• Is it Year 7 through to 11? – Yes.

• How do they get assigned – do they choose?– Yes but clearly limitations by group size, and

some students may need to be directed into study support.

• Can 6th form ever attend enrichment time?– They can attend if they do not have an

extended period 5 on their timetable on Tuesday or Thursday.
