University Transfer ProgramsPCC’s University Transfer Programs allow students to complete two years of coursework at PCC and transfer these credits towards a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. Credits earned in PCC’s Associate of Arts (A.A), or Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees transfer to all 16 University of North Carolina institutions. Students who graduate with one of these degrees are admitted as juniors based on a statewide agreement to ensure a smooth transfer. PCC also offers the Associate in General Education (A.G.E.) and the Associate of Fine Arts (A.F.A.) degrees for students who wish to broaden their education for specific personal interest, growth and development. For more information, contact Benita Graves, University Transfer Advisor; (336) 322-2155, [email protected].

Career and Technical ProgramsStudents who want to earn a two-year degree leading to a career may enroll in an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, diploma, or certificate program. Students choose from among many technical and occupational programs that prepare them for employment. Most A.A.S. degrees are not intended to transfer towards a bachelor’s degree at a four-year school. Some credits earned in A.A.S. programs will transfer. For more information, contact Walter Montgomery, Dean, Technical and Occupational Programs, (336) 322-2258; [email protected], Shelly Stone, Dean, Caswell County Campus Programs, (336) 694-8042; [email protected] and Alisa Montgomery, Dean, Health Sciences and Human Services, (336) 322-2213; [email protected].

Continuing Education ProgramsPCC’s Continuing Education division provides occupational and professional development training, personnel enrichment, seminars and small business counseling, certification and re-certification training, and public safety training directed at meeting the needs of individuals, business, industry, and our community. Take the first step on your path to a better future and let us help you to successfully “cross the finish line” to meeting your goals! For more information call the contact person listed under each course/program offering or Lisa Ashley at (336) 322-2113.

» PAGE 19Mechatronics Engineering Technology

Mechatronics Engineering Technology offers a multidisciplinary curriculum that provides students with the diverse skill set required to install, calibrate, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain automated systems. It combines mechanics, controls, electronic and electrical engineering, computer science, and systems design to create useful products. Examples of mechatronic systems include robots, digitally controlled combustion engines, machine tools with self-adaptive tools, and automated guided vehicles. In such systems, software has become an integral part of the product itself—an actual machine element necessary for proper function and operation.

The curriculum is designed to prepare students for jobs requiring electrical, mechanical, and computer skills necessary to work on complex systems found in manufacturing environments. Emphasis is placed on the integration of theory and the hands-on application of engineering principles. Hands-on instruction develops skills in mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluid power, and automated control systems.

Transfer Articulation Agreement with University of North Carolina System

The North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) is a statewide agreement governing the transfer of credits between N.C. community colleges and N.C. public universities. The current CAA identifies a set of courses which are universally transferable to all UNC institutions as part of the Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC). Some UGETC courses can be taken as part of the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree, while others are aligned with the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. Still others will apply to both the A.A. and the A.S. degrees. If a student obtains a C or above in a UGETC course, then the student is guaranteed that the course is transferable. The following UGETC courses are offered at PCC:

Other General Education courses are available and may transfer in to a four-year university as a General Education course or as a pre-major/elective course.

Additional classes may be added or deleted prior to the start of the semester. For a complete and up-to-date list of classes, go to the PCC website: www.piedmontcc.edu/classschedule or

HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) is being offered at both the Person County and Caswell County campuses as an alternate to GED® computer based testing. HiSET tests at PCC are administered as a paper and pencil test and are offered in an English and a Spanish version. GED® testing also continues to be offered at both campuses of PCC. As with GED® testing, the North Carolina Community College System will issue a High School Equivalency Diploma to those who pass HiSET. HiSET tests measure adults’ skills and knowledge in five core areas that make up the five HiSET subtests:

Language Arts – Reading • Language Arts – Writing • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies

Package price is $50 for those who register for all five subject tests. To register for one subject test at a time, cost is $15.

More information is available about the test and how to register for it on the HiSET website at http://hiset.ets.org. To learn about this opportunity at PCC, contact Cynthia Worth at [email protected] or (336) 322-2142, Person County or (336) 694-8055, Caswell County.

PATRICIA HOLMES In 1999, Patricia Holmes walked across the Mexican border while pregnant and not speaking English. She did not complete high school in Mexico and was seeking education and a better life in America. Determined to make the USA her home, she taught herself English by watching TV with subtitles and talking with speakers of English. After learning English, she took the US Citizenship Exam, passed it, and became a US citizen. She married an American and began a family. Patricia worked various manual labor jobs such as cleaning windows, bathrooms, etc. “Now, I need to set my goals higher and succeed on my GED® test so I can be an example for my kids and maybe get a better job. PCC offered what I was looking for (basic skills classes to prepare for GED® testing) and the personnel here are great! They cheer you on! I tell people to go to PCC. I love to learn and grow and PCC helps me do that.” Patricia said. She continued with, “I love this country because it is the land of opportunities! If you really want to succeed, you have to set your mind to it. It is possible in the USA.”

Patricia plans to enroll in college courses at PCC once she earns her high school equivalency diploma. Her goal is to become a motivational speaker using her story to inspire others.

Success Story

If you are a parent who wants to prepare for a high school equivalency test to earn your diploma and also want to learn how to help your child succeed in school, this is the class for you! Computer literacy, as well as college and career readiness skills, are also included in the content so that you will be better prepared for success. Andrea Childers, ACE instructor/coordinator, is looking forward to working with you in the ACE class at Earl Bradsher Preschool.

When: Mon. - Thurs., 8:30 a.m-2 p.m., Jan. 11- May 13.

Where: Earl Bradsher Preschool, 404 South Morgan Street, Roxboro
