*Source: Economic Modeling Specialist, Inc.after layoff, wife and Mother of two retrains for new career. Greene County resident Lois Brock was informed in 2007 by her Charlottesville-area employer that her job as receiving clerk would end with the relocation of the firm’s operations to Mexico. She had worked there 17 years on assembly lines and most recently two years in receiving. Her options included paid training through provisions of a trade act or looking for a job while collecting unemployment. “I chose to come to PVCC to get more skills,” Brock said.
Assisted by staff in PVCC’s Career Services Office, she evaluated her individual interests, attitudes and values to discover which career areas were most compatible. Business ranked high on the list, and she started taking classes full time in summer 2008, eventually opting to train for the Administrative Support Technology Certificate. She will graduate in December 2009 and plans to use PVCC’s job placement services to help with resume-writing and other job-search strategies.
Looking back, she described her first class at PVCC. “It was overwhelming. I left in tears because it had been 20-some years since I’d been in school,” said the 1985 graduate of William Monroe High School. “I had been telling my kids ‘Be the best that you can be. Knowledge is power.’ I had to show them that I could do this. The instructors were so encouraging, ”she continued, “and I have gained so much self-confidence. PVCC has provided me with the skills I need to have a successful career.”
Office and administrative support occupations is one of the top-10 job-growth categories in Central Virginia through 2019, according to Economic Modeling Specialists, Inc.* To learn more about degree and certificate programs at PVCC that can position you for a brighter future in this or another profession, ask our admission advisors in the Welcome Center.

provide a scholarship for deserving students! PvCC students are veterans returning from iraq and Afghanistan, moms with children in school, teenagers seeking higher education their families can afford and adults in mid-career who have lost their jobs. PvCC students persist often in the face of incredible odds because they believe education will change their lives. As one student put it, “i want to show my grandchildren that education is the most important thing in life.”
your gift to the PvCC Educational Foundation can provide scholarship assistance for deserving students. use our secure Web site to make a gift for scholarships or to make an unrestricted gift.
go to www.pvcc.edu and click on “giving to PvCC.”thank you for thinking of PvCC students who need our help so they can make better lives for themselves and their families.
Scholarships created in honor of PVCC Professor Emerita Chica Tenney, seated right, were awarded this year to (clockwise from bottom left) Susannah Cadwalader, Hairuo Yi and Jennifer Elmore.

PVCC is creating a “culture of writing” at the College. We believe that writing has value and that the demonstration of good writing skills and clear thinking are essential for our students’ success in jobs and at four-year colleges to which they may transfer.
