MAPS
There are different kinds of maps.
A road map shows national and state highways, major roads connecting various cities and
towns, airports and railroad tracks These maps are usually used for directions while driving.
A weather map indicates the weather conditions and patterns of cities, states and countries.
A grid map is a map which has a set of squares or a grid, which are used to locate places.
Each location uses a letter and a number on the grid.
A physical map indicates the various geographical features of a state or country. These are
mountains, hills, plains, deserts, rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.
A political map shows boundaries of states and countries, major towns and cities. A capital
city is usually marked with a star within a circle on a political map.
SCALE
To measure distances accurately on a map, mapmakers use a map scale. It tells us how much
each unit, as shown on the map, really measures on the earth. If a map says that 1 cm = 10
km, it means that 1 cm shown on the map, actually represents 10 km on earth.

Answer key- Worksheet 2
Q1. Fill in the blanks using the words from the help box.
Oxygen carbon dioxide photosynthesis water food- making sunlight
chlorophyll glucose blue-black starch
Leaves are the food making factories of green plants. Leaves contain a green substance called
chlorophyll. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the air. Roots absorb water and other
nutrients from the soil. Chlorophyll converts water and carbon dioxide into glucose. This
process is called photosynthesis. Oxygen is produced as a by-product of photosynthesis.
Iodine solution can be used to test the presence of starch. Starch turns blue-black on coming
in contact with iodine.
Q2. How does the rate of photosynthesis change on:
a).Decrease in the amount of water the rate of photosynthesis decreases.
b). Increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and sunlight the rate of photosynthesis increases.

KINDS OF PLANTS
There is a large variety of plants on our planet. Some plants are terrestrial plants that grow on
land while others are aquatic plants that grow underwater.
The different kind of terrestrial plants are:
1. Plants on mountains- plants are tall and straight; branches are slanting which allows
snow to slide down easily. These trees usually have no flowers; their seeds are
enclosed in cones; leaves are shaped like needles and have a wax-like coating on them
which protect them from extreme cold.eg. pine, deodar, fir.
https://youtu.be/Q-6B9rTzPoQ
-
Fern, moss and lichen are small sturdy plants that grow on soil, rocks or other trees on
mountains.
-
2. Plants in plains- plants have branches that spread wide and have several leaves on
them eg. neem, peepal, gulmohar
3. Plants in deserts - Some plants and trees have adapted very well to the dry and harsh
climatic condition of the desert. As there is very little water available in the deserts,
these plants have fleshy stems that allows them to store water in them. The root
system of these plants spreads over large area underground in search of water. They
have very few leaves, if any. A cactus plant has thorns instead of leaves to cut down
on water loss. Examples of plants found in desert are cactus, keekar, date palm.
-
4. Plants in areas with heavy rainfall - Large number of trees grow here. eg. rubber,
pepper, teak, cashew and cash crops such as rice and sugarcane.
Plants in this area have many leaves and remain green throughout the year.
-
5. Plants in swampy areas- It is difficult for plants and trees to grow here as the soil in
such areas is sticky and salty. Mangroves have adapted to such conditions by growing
breathing roots above the ground that help them to absorb air.
6. Plants in coastal areas- Plants that can survive in salty water, along the coast, with
heavy rainfall grow here. Palm trees are common. Coconut trees grow abundantly in
coastal areas.
-
Q1. State whether true or false. If false, write the correct statement below the false
one.
a). A cactus has thorns instead of fruits.
_________________________________
b). Plants growing on hilly areas and mountains are tall and have straight branches.
_____________________________________
c). Mangrove trees have breathing roots, which breathe underwater.
____________________________________
d). Pants in coastal areas can survive in heavy rainfall.

-
Q2. Name them:
a). Plants growing in areas with heavy rainfall
