The mandolins used on this project are a Northfield “Big Mon” F-5 model #98 on tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13.A Northfield F-5S with an Engelmann Spruce top was used on tracks 3, 6, 7, and 9.

The man in these pictures is my maternal Great Grandfather Tom Carter—aka Big Tom or Poppy Carter. He was A.P. Carter’s cousin and was a circuit preacher and would travel throughout the Scott County, Virginia area preaching. He was also a midwife/country doctor, of sorts. My grandfather (Fred Carter) once told me that the first time he heard a phonograph record was when A.P. Carter brought a phonograph over and played the records of the first Carter Family sessions that they had recorded in Bristol.

The place that I first heard this kind of music was at The Carter Fold in Hiltons, VA—the homeplace of The Carter Family and a place that still has traditional music every Saturday night, and that I still perform at on occasion. This music is something that is very dear to me and I count myself very blessed to have grown up in the East Tennessee/Southwest Virginia area. Having been allowed to hear and perform with so many terrific musicians from this area has made me the musician that I am.

One of these photos is of Big Tom doing a Baptism in what is probably the North Fork of the Holston River and the other is of him getting ready to go hunting. The other is of Tom and Clara (my Great Grandmother) when they were married.

I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the gift of music and all the many blessings he pours out daily in my life. For His grace in giving me so much that I do not de-serve, and His mercy in not giving me what I do deserve. Of these blessings, my wife Tina and my sons A.P. and Riley are my most precious. I love you more than I can ever express and am aston-ished that the Lord has allowed me to share my life with you!

I would also like to thank my father Howard who has shown me how to be the man I am, my mother Linda (I miss you so much every day), my brother Howard Jr., Anita, Noah, and Lindsay Steffey; my sister Tiffany and Scott Glover, Caleb and Ethan Glover; the absolute best in-laws on this earth—Paul and Susan Trianosky; Jerry Smith, Linda Phipps, Mike and Jackie Johnson, Dan and Lesa Watson; Ryan, Annie, and Graham Smith, Stephanie Blevins, Katie Blevins; Tom and Beverley Horton for their kindness and allowing us to take the album pictures on their beautiful farm, Rusty, Nicki, Dallas, and Rachel Breedlove; Barry, Aliceson, and Marshall Bales; Kevin, Kendra, and Mason McKinnon, Keith McKinnon, Whitney Phillips, Heath Roop, Chelsea Colvard, Eric and Jordain Hardin; Brandon, Laci, and Silas Hardin; Aus-tin, Jessica, and Hudson Mikeal, Phillip Jones and all the Jones family; The Snyder Family;

Randy, Bitty, Katy, and Hannah Cook; Rhoda and Barry Kemp, Dee Carter, James and Greta Shelton, Sherry Boyd, Dave Yates, John Goad, John Lawless, Amanda Caudle, Mike and Susan Drudge at Class Act Entertainment for all their hard work, The Boxcars, everyone at Organic Records for allowing me the opportunity to make this album, the students and faculty at the ETSU Bluegrass Program, Wayne Henderson Mandolins, Northfield Mandolins, Collings Mandolins, D’Addario Strings, Blue Chip Picks, and to all the wonderful friends and folks I con-sider family that have followed my career and supported me throughout it all—I am without a doubt one of the luckiest men in the world to be able to do what I do, and to share it with so many terrific people!!!

Special Thanks to Mickey Gamble, Ty Gil-pin, Jeff Collins, and Greg Bentley for sharing and encouraging my vision for this album, and to Van Atkins for his patience and hard work engineering and mixing this project—you’re amazing! And to all the musicians that were a part of this project. It was an amazing feeling getting to play along with each of you and to say I was inspired would be an understatement. This project was something that I have wanted to do for some time now, and working with such professionals as these has made it both easy and fulfilling. I love this music!
