Reading Hong Kong, Reading OurselvesEdited by
Janel CURRYProvost, Gordon College, U.S.
Paul HANSTEDTProfessor of English, Roanoke College, U.S.
978-962-937-235-4 • Pb • 336 pp • 159 x 210 mm • HK$195 • July 2014
This book, written by fourteen reflective scholars about living and learning from Hong Kong,
builds on the growing interest of using “place” as text while providing a model of deepening cross-
cultural encounters. Each chapter is written in a personal and experiential style, exploring Hong
Kong through the lenses of a range of disciplines that shaped individual author’s perceptions and
encounters.
The city is like a text one reads and deciphers, linking one’s sense of other cities with one’s present
experiences of this city in this moment of time. In reading the city, readers discover not only what is
“out there” in the ever moving surround of Hong Kong’s urban life, but also what is inside oneself as
newcomer and as from another city and culture.

Mao Zedong was a Chinese communist leader and founder of the People’s Republic of China. He
developed his own ideology and methodology known as Maoism or Mao Zedong Thought, and his
thought has a great influence in China or even overseas.
This book aims at bringing a group of scholars to address the uses of Mao in China (PRC) today with
special reference to the Bo Xilai case. It also provides insights and detail on how and what we know
about modern China. Contributing authors, including a number of French scholars, illustrate how
Maoism influences and engages in government, business sector or social life.

China’s economic growth during the last couple of decades has been impressive. Around the turn
of the millennium, China’s energy situation changed drastically. Before 2000, about 96% of China’s
energy demand was met domestically. Since 2001, however, this position of near self-reliance has
changed. With steadily increasing energy demand, China’s need for foreign energy has grown. Today,
China is the world’s biggest energy consumer and emitter of greenhouse gases.
This book summarizes China’s energy and environmental policies with special reference to the 2011–
2015 Twelfth Five-Year Plan (FYP). By reviewing and investigating China’s recent efforts and to resolve
the misunderstandings by addressing the key criticisms of its energy policies, this book presents
both the domestic approaches and the international agreements in which China participates.

New Trends of Political Participation in Hong Kong Edited by
Joseph Y. S. CHENGChair Professor of Political Science and Co-ordinator of Contemporary China Research Project,
City University of Hong Kong
978-962-937-233-0 • Pb • 532 pp • 170 x 220 mm • HK$238 • July 2014
This volume in 15 chapters serves as a useful overview of various significant aspects of the new
trends of political participation in Hong Kong. Written by a team of experts who have been
astute observers of Hong Kong Politics, the book covers a wide spectrum of topics ranging from
a conventional understanding of political participation (e.g., the activities of political parties
and interest groups) to a more specialized form of participation (e.g., the relationships between
government and legislators in policy-making). The study of the rise of new social movements by
the Post-80s generation would be of particular interest to those who are keen to comprehend the
sharpening inter-generational differences.
There will be a readership among academics and university students. This can also be a valuable
reference for the media, policy-makers, or anyone interested in Hong Kong politics.

Girls and Media—Dreams and RealitiesKara CHANProfessor and Head, Department of Communication Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University
978-962-937-226-2 • Pb • 272 pp • 152 x 229 mm • HK$180 • July 2014
The role of media in any society is vital and is closely related to brands and consumption especially
in a vibrant 21st century Asian city. Hong Kong with its free-market economy and urban bustle is
a perfect place to observe this in action. But Hong Kong is also deeply conservative in many ways
especially with regard to family values, and the presence of overtly sexualized images in advertising
sits uncomfortably with the values of modesty and traditional sexual mores that exist there. Young
girls are also discovering their identities like any other groups of girls in the world, and often this
journey will not be easy.
This book deals with media and the extent to which media representations influence girls in
Hong Kong and how they are affected by this ubiquitous presence. Through the quantitative and
qualitative studies, readers could examine and understand how tween girls and teen girls in Hong
Kong interact with the media and how they interpret the messages from the media.
The observations found in the studies are also valuable to parents, educators, and communication
scholars to better understand the influence of media on the value orientations of girls; and we hope
that responsible marketers and educators can use these research findings to communicate with girls
in ways which can improve their well-being.

Different global healthcare challenges bring threats to the healthcare system. Governments of
various countries have a leading role in protecting the population by managing daily health care in
a sustainable manner.
This book, written by a team of renowned scholars and leading practitioners, is organized into three
main sections. It aims to evaluate how different parties can assist in building up local community
capacity to achieve sustainable health and wellness. Apart from pointing out the limitation of the
current system, it also discusses the future directions of the health care system in order to cope with

Self-Access Language Learning (SALL) has played a prominent part in language education in
universities. Its role is to foster autonomous learning among students. With the wide-spread
implementation of SALL and its increasing impacts on students, it is important to understand how
SALL is managed in order to meet the learning needs of the users in the most resource-effective
way. This book provides readers with an understanding of SALL management by setting the
discussion against a wider backdrop and also examining details of current good practice.
The authors examine issues of leadership and management in education before turning to look
at the roles of a SALL manager, and suggest how these roles are changing and what the future
may hold for managing SALL. Case studies are used to illustrate how SALL is managed in different
universities as a way of contextualising the issues discussed in the book.
The book is of relevance to institutional and departmental managers, classroom-based language
teachers, teachers more directly involved in providing SALL opportunities and, of course, SALL
managers.

The book provides guidelines and practical creative exercises which equip creative-major students in
early semesters as well as creative practitioners with fundamental knowledge on creation methods.
Combination of functionality, simplicity and aesthetics in modern design is considered a
fundamental design principle in the Bauhaus School in Germany, and, inspired by the School, the
creative handcrafting exercises and the concepts introduced in this book are primarily coherent
with this principle.
The book draws a direction between two and three dimensional material-based design and modern
digital creation process. The first part of the book introduces various creative handcrafting exercises
on proportion, geometry and modularity, among other fundamental design principles. The creative
exercises will sensitize students on aesthetical and structural issues, and thus serve as an essential
building block for application of the design principles to computer-based creative processes, which
are introduced in the second part of the book.

Keeping memories of individuals and groups is perhaps one of the most significant characters that
distinguishes human beings from other species. For many centuries in the past, historians and others
have strived to preserve as many historical materials as possible for records and for shaping the
past. There has always been an assumption that the past can be clearly and accurately reflected in
records, and that archives is an essential element in the formation of social and cultural memories.
This book is an unusual study of a subject that was nearly invisible in colonial Hong Kong when,
for many reasons, the society was unconcerned about the narrative of local history. In 11 chapters
using the interview approach, readers are encouraged to learn from the conversations recorded in
this book that, archives of various scopes have been created in recent years by private institutions
and groups, though public access of these archives has been restricted in one way or another.

SERIESCARING FOR YOUTH SERIES
Youth is a time of life for the search of self-identity and personal values,
and for the development of potential and social responsibility and
commitment. In Hong Kong, while young people have the opportunity to
enjoy the benefits and increased prosperity of society, many of them are
weaker than their previous generations in handling emotion and solving
problems.
Youth cannot be considered in isolation. Their lives are in constant
interaction with various institutional systems that make up their world.
Family, school, peers, employment and technological advancement all
shape the development of young people. In particular, the technology,
media and telecommunications systems have made a great impact on
modern life. This “Caring for Youth Series” has incorporated various research
interests within a holistic and systematic perspective, with the assumption
that issues confronting youth are interactional in nature.
