BRAND SUMMARY: The Oliva Serie V first had its soft release in June 2007, debuting at a few retailers in the United States, and was officially launched at the IPCPR trade show that summer. Since its release five years ago, the cigar has done quite well in our tastings, appearing on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year list five times. The top priming, Nicaraguan Habano-seed sun-grown wrappers found on the cigars contribute to their strength. (Oliva also occasionally releases limited-edition versions of the Serie V with Connecticut broadleaf wrappers.) In this tast-ing, we found all the Serie Vs consistently medium to full in body. Construction-wise, every size was rolled with an attractive, oily wrapper. Two cigars stood out. The Belicoso, which scored 91 points, was well made, flavorful and full bodied, and remained quite interesting throughout the smoke. The hefty Double Toro scored 90 points for its exemplary construction and flavor. Average Rating: 88.7 points

TATUAJE’S PETE JOHNSON LAUNCHES NEW CIGAR COMPANYBY ANDREW NAGY

Pete Johnson, the owner of Havana Cellars and the Tatuaje

cigar brand, is starting a new com-pany that will unveil four new cigar brands in August.

Called L’Atelier Imports, the new company will be headquartered in Miami, rather than Los Angeles, where Havana Cellars is based. Johnson said he created L’Atelier (Frenchfor “the workshop”) so he could experiment without hurting Tatuaje.

“It’s a chance for me to expand my footprint in the cigar industry without adding to the Tatuaje portfolio, which is already at capacity,” said Johnson. Tatuaje, which has made Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 list for eight straight years, now includes 12 full-production lines as well as a host of limited-release cigars, such as the Monster Series.

Johnson said he also wanted some-thing that could sustain itself in the future with little guidance from himself. While L’Atelier will be overseen by Johnson, day-to-day operations are being charged to K.C. Johnson (Pete’s older brother) and friends Dan Welsh and Sean Johnson (no relation).

Although there are no formal titles in place at L’Atelier, Johnson believes each member of the company offers a strong mix of skill and experience that will help the company succeed. K.C., while fairly new to cigars, has a strong background in sales. Much like his brother, he also possesses a creative market-ing mind. Dan, who has been smoking with Pete since he worked at the Grand Havana Room in Los Angeles, has a head for customer service and a knack for photography. Sean, a seasoned cigar enthusiast, will be called on for logistics, business development and digital marketing.

“They are people that I trust not just in business, but in life,” explained Johnson in an interview with Cigar Insider. “People that could easily make the company great, and they all have uniquely different talents.”

The first cigars from L’Atelier will debut in August at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show in Orlando, Florida. There will be two premium cigar

lines and two bundle lines, each of which will be made in Nicaragua by the Garcia Family, Johnson’s longtime partners. All will be marketed as “produced by the makers and creator of Tatuaje.”

The flagship L’Atelier brand will be rolled at My Father Cigars from all-Nicaraguan filler and binder and wrapped in Ecuadoran leaf. The brand will be medium to full bodied, according to Johnson, and the sizes are a take on the Cohiba Behike BHK trio launched by Cuba in 2010. There will be a LAT52 (4 3/4 inches by 52 ring), LAT54 (5 5/8 by 54), and a LAT56 (6 1/2 by 56), virtually identical to the trio of sizes in the Behike line, right down to the pigtail caps. L’Atelier will sell for $8.50 to $10 and will come in boxes of 15, and boxed samplers of nine cigars with three of each size. Johnson said he also is already planning extensions.

The second premium brand is called Surrogates, also made at My Father Cigars. Surrogates is actually the brainchild of Welsh, who sold the private line through his online tobacconist property New Havana Cigars. Welsh will be licensing the line to L’Atelier Imports. Surrogates is comprised of four cigars. Skull Breaker, a 5 1/4 inch by 52 belicoso, and Bone Crusher, a 5 1/4 by 55, came to market last year. Joining these two will be a new, box-pressed cigar measuring 5 3/4 by 54, called Crystal Baller, and Tramp Stamp, a 5 1/4 by 48 ring smoke that Johnson says “is a little play on Tatuaje and Black Label.” Each is full bodied, combining a Nicaraguan blend with Ecuadoran Habano wrapper. Each will sell for $7 to $8.50.

To accompany the premium lines, Johnson and his team have created a bundle cigar for consumers on a bud-get to enjoy every day. “We wanted to give the smoker a true bang for their buck,” said Johnson. “Obviously the bigger ring gauge is a trend right now, and we wanted to make a bundle cigar that was worth it.” The result was El Suelo and Trocadéro, fat, bundle brands that come in packages of 20 and sell for $3.75 to $4.75 each. The blends are a mix of American,

Ecuadoran and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The bundle brands will be rolled by the Garcia family at TACUBA, a facility about a mile away from My Father Cigars. Trocadéro, which Johnson calls mild to medium, comes in three sizes: Cambon (5 1/4 inch by 52 ring), Honoré (5 3/4 by 56) and Montaigne (6 1/4 by 60). El Suelo, which he says is more medium to full, also comes in three sizes, including the Prado, a 5 3/4 by 58 belicoso, Terreno (5 1/4 inches by 56 ring gauge) and Campo (6 1/4 by 60).

Johnson says that the entire run for the four brands this year will be about 100,000 cigars.

“We’re going to wait to see the response at the trade show,” said Johnson. “But, we’re going full-force to make sure we have enough product to ship to retailers.” n

GOLDEN PUNCH REGIONAL EDITION HITS U.K.BY DAVID SAVONA

The United Kingdom’s second (and final) Regional Edi-tion cigar for 2011 has finally arrived, just in time for

the games of the XXX Olympiad, which open in London next month. The Punch Medalla d’Oro (Spanish for Gold Medal) had its official launch on May 31 at the summer party thrown by Hunters & Frankau, the importer of Cuban cigars into the United Kingdom. It is in stock in British shops now.

Measuring 6 1/8 inches long with a ring gauge of 50, the cigars are wrapped in gleaming golden foil. The distinctive wrapping extends past the halfway point of the cigar, with the red and silver regional edition band (reading “Exclusivo Gran Bretaña”) extending past the end of the foil. A close examination of the foil shows that it has been stamped over and over with the words “EMS 2012,” EMS referring to English Market Selection.

There are 3,000 boxes, each one containing 10 cigars, for a total run of 30,000 cigars.

The cigars are quite pricey. A box of 10 Medalla d’Oros retails for £275 (about $428), or £27.50 ($43) per cigar.

The smokes are styled after the Bolivar Gold Medal, a significantly thinner smoke (42 ring gauge) that came par-tially wrapped in gold foil. The Bolivars were discontinued in the early 1990s, brought back in Germany, then reissued as a Casa del Habano special, but the cigars were once again discontinued within the last few years.

The Bolivar Gold Medal proved popular in certain ci-gar circles, but never did exceptionally well in blind tast-ings in Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider. The cigar was rated three times, scoring 87 points on one occasion, and 88 twice.

Punch is a relatively small Cuban brand, and it’s proven quite popular in Regional Edition form, where Cuban cigar importers work with Habanos S.A. to create special sizes available in limited-edition form for their specific mar-kets. The biggest Cuban brands, such as Montecristo and Cohiba, are off-limits, so brands like Punch and Bolivar make frequent appearances on the RE list. The Medalla d’Oro is one of four Punch Regional Edition cigars for 2011, and the last to reach the market. The others are the Punch Clasico for Switzerland; the Punch Sabrosos for Asia/Pacific, and the Punch Descobridores for Portugal. n

EXCLUSIVE: MONTECRISTO EPIC COMING NEXT MONTHBY DAVID SAVONA

A bolder, artistically packaged Montecristo from the Dominican Republic is almost ready for cigar shops.

Montecristo Epic, a cigar made with tobacco dating back to 2007, is scheduled to reach tobacconists in July. The brand extension will initially come in three sizes, with a third, limited-edition size following later in the year.

Described as the fullest-bodied Montecristo in the entire Altadis U.S.A. Inc. portfolio, Montecristo Epic is being made with a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican filler tobaccos (some of it grown in 2007) a Nicaraguan binder and Ecuadoran Habano wrapper, one of the most popular wrapper varieties being used today.

Cigar Insider smoked a sample of the cigar, which had an earthy quality and a peppery flavor. It definitely tasted fuller bodied and fuller flavored than most Dominican Montecristos, and it held a beautiful, extremely solid ash.

Altadis says the cigars—which are made at its Tabacalerade Garcia Ltd. factory in La Romana, Dominican Republic, are rolled by an elite group of cigarmakers it calls “Grupo de Maestros.” The cigars will come in Robusto, Toro and Churchill vitolas, with suggested retail prices of $12 to $14. A limited-edition No. 2 will be added later in the year.

The cigars are packed in beautiful and extremely colorful boxes. There’s a large, outer cardboard box of canary yel-low, red and gold, with an oversized “MO” for Montecris-to. The glossy inner box, ultra sleek and heavily varnished, features the same design. Inside are ten cigars cradled in slots custom made for the shape, with secondary gold,

yellow and brown bands beneath a punched up version of the original Montecristo band. Each box comes with a signed certificate, showing the lot number, cigar rollers and group of inspectors behind the creation of the cigar.

This is the second bold looking redo of a major Altadis brand, following the spring release of Romeo by Romeo y Julieta, which was packed in very bright red and white boxes. Like the Montecristos, those Romeos were also made with Ecuadoran Habano wrappers.

The regular Altadis Montecristo, sometimes referred to as Montecristo Yellow, is quite mild, with a Connecticut-shade wrapper. There are several other varieties. Montecristo is the linchpin in the Altadis U.S.A. brand portfolio, although it makes more Romeo y Julietas.

Look for a tasting of the new line in an upcoming issue of Cigar Insider. n

NEW BRANDS, NEW FACTORIES FOR EIROABY G. CLAY WHITTAKER

Christian Eiroa’s Tabacaleras Unidas, the company behind

his CLE brand of cigars, has announced its first extension— Asylum Cigars. Asylum will consist of three cigar lines, all of which will be rolled in the Tabacos Rancho Jamastran factory in Honduras, where the Camacho brand is made. But Tabacos Rancho Jamastran is just one of three factories that will eventually be producing cigars for Eiroa.

Asylum Cigars is the brain child of Kevin Baxter and Tom Lazuka. Lazuka was a former sales rep for Camacho, and Baxter, a former marine, spent two and a half decades in corporate America after his military service. Together they’ll be producing two premium lines under the names Asylum and Asylum 13, as well as a third short-filler line called Schizo.

Eiroa is excited about the relationship, and says the part-nership with Baxter and Lazuka is “perfectly aligned with my vision to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to live their dream, while building a strategic portfolio of innova-tive brands.”

Danielle Hawthorne, the chief marketing officer for Tabacaleras Unidas, said that all Asylum cigars will be Nicaraguan puros.

Eiroa’s relationship with Tabacos Rancho Jamastran goes back considerably. The longtime president of Cama-cho Cigars, Eiroa (along with his father, Julio) sold Cama-cho to Davidoff in 2008. He recently told Cigar Insider about the release of his first cigars since leaving Camacho, the CLE brand, which is to be rolled in Tabacos RanchosJamastran in Honduras, where Camacho cigars have always been made.

At this point Tabacaleras Unidas considers Tabacos Ran-cho Jamastran essential to its production. Eiroa says that the relationship with the Camacho factory will continue in part because the factory has access to special leaf he wants to use: “There are some tobaccos that Tabacos Rancho Jamastran has that we can’t get.”

But Tabacaleras Unidas will also have its own factory at some point, and will eventually have cigars made in various places. The company is building a space in Danlí, Honduras, out of an old movie theatre called El Aladino owned by the Eiroa family. “My Grandfather had movie theaters, and we’re converting El Aladino into a factory,” said Eiroa, who expects the remodeling to be finished by August.

A third factory in the U.S., called Wynwood, will also produce cigars for Eiroa. Look for more information on Wynwood in an upcoming Cigar Insider.

All of the brands under the Tabacaleras Unidas umbrella are expected to arrive in early July, when Eiroa’s non-compete agreement expires. The Asylum line will come in four sizes: 4 inch by 44 ring, 6 inch by 50 ring, a 6 by 54 torpedo and a 6 by 60. The line will retail between $4.40 and $6.60. The full-bodied Asylum 13 line will come in three sizes: 5 by 50, 6 by 60, and a massive 7 by 70 smoke, priced at $5, $6 and $7 respectively.

Asylum will be sold in 25-count boxes, and Asylum 13 will be sold in 50-count boxes, except for the 70-ring cigars, which will be sold in boxes of 30. It should be noted that Eiroa’s Tabacaleras Unidas is unaffiliated with the G.R. Tabacaleras Unidas factory where Gran Habano cigars are made. n

NEW “TEASER” FROM BRICK HOUSEBY G. CLAY WHITTAKER

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is releasing a new size of Brick House, and it’s a short smoke designed to offer the

smoker the foundations of the blend in a fraction of the time. The Teaser is 3 1/2 inches long by 56 ring, and is built like a Brick House but smokes for just a few minutes. It’s meant to give a quick taste of the Nicaraguan puro.

IN THE NEXT CIGAR INSIDER

Breaking news from around the cigar world, along with ratings on hot new cigars. Read about it first in Cigar Insider.

Your Next CIGAR INSIDER Arrives on Tuesday, July 3.

J.C. Newman Cigar Co., the owner of the Brick House brand, says the cigars will pack the same complex flavors and aromas of as regular-sized cigar, and are designed to be “tasting” cigars. “Similar to a wine tasting,” they explain, “the size and blend gives the recipient just enough taste to experience the Brick House flavor.”

The company says the smoke will last approximately 20 minutes. “We literally wanted to provide a ‘tease’—just enough flavor to get them excited about the great flavor of Brick House cigars,” said Eric Newman, president of J.C. Newman, which is headquartered in Tampa, Florida.

The Teaser does not have a suggested retail price at this point, as the smoke is not for sale and the company has no plans to release the cigar for purchase. For now, the small smokes will be available only at Newman’s Brick House events, given out free of charge to the first 50 people who attend Brick House Bashes. There are more than 40 events scheduled around the country between now and the end of the year. Brick House Bashes kicked off earlier this month with simultaneous events in Maryland and Florida. A full schedule of events is available at jcnewmanonline.com. n

AGING ROOM SMALL BATCH GETS TWO NEW SIZESBY GREGORY MOTTOLA

Made solely with Dominican tobacco, the Aging Room Small Batch M356 brand will be getting two new

sizes, bumping the portfolio up to six cigars. The line was first launched at last year’s IPCPR trade

show and gained notoriety after an impressive vertical tasting in Cigar Insider and eventual placement in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2011. (The Presto scored 92 points, earning it the No. 16 spot on the list.) Now the brand will have two new expressions: a double-tapered classic perfecto called The Forte, which measures 5 7/8 inches long by 50 ring gauge, and the Motivo, measuring 6 by 46. The Forte has a suggested retail price of $8.24, while the Motivo sells for $7.49. Each will be introduced this summer at the IPCPR trade show in Orlando.

Aging Room Small Batch M356 is distributed by Boutique Blends, which is a subsidiary of the Habana Cuba Cigar Co., owned by Rafael Nodal. The are produced at Jochi Blanco’s Tabacalera La Palma factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. n
