The Year of Mercy Pope Francis says the modern church stands at a crossroads of two ways of thinking: “We can fear to

lose the saved and we can want to save the lost.” The thinking of the “doctors of law,” he said, would re-move danger by casting out the sick or sinful person. But God’s way is to show mercy and accept this per-

son, turning condemnation into salvation. That has always been the church’s way, too, he said. This means the church must “leave her four walls be-hind” and not only welcome people who knock at its doors, but also seek out those on the “outskirts” of life,

including the sick, the suffering and the spiritually alienated. It also means “rolling up our sleeves and not standing by and watching passively the suffering of the world,” he said.

The Year of Mercy has begun. We are called to serve the person in need. Often this call is uncomfortable. We are asked to give; this can be upsetting. We are invited to help, this means changing our ways of living. We are to notice those who are on the fringes of our daily live, this challenges our routines. We are asked to help those in need, this means doing things dif-ferently. This Year of Mercy asks us to forget the usual response to an invitation when we say, “We never did it that way before.” Msgr. Frank Kelley

Invite your family and friends to join you on the 14th February. Msgr. Frank Kelley

The Gospel reading today “The Wedding at Cana in Galilee” has brought me back to my childhood in Italy, living in a farm-house where everyone was always welcome and there was al-ways food and lots of wine ready to be served. I also remember that water was very precious. At that time there was no indoor plumbing and any water that was used was from my uncle’s well. My older sisters would fill large pans and bring the water to the house. Water was never wasted. It was used cautiously and appreciated. I also remember that the wine that was served to the workers in the early morning was “l’aquata”, a weaker wine which was wine made with grape skins and water, so that the workers would not get drunk. When they had finished working, the good wine was served with their meals. In a way, it was a celebration. Many workers would come just to get a meal. Most peasant farmers would drink only “l’aquata” so that they could sell the good wine. So, what is this Gospel reading all about? Was the action of Jesus a precursor for what we do today when we come together at Mass to celebrate our Faith? Receiving the host, the wine and water that is brought to the celebrant by the altar servers is similar to the servers that brought water to Jesus so that he could do his miracle by turning it into wine. Coming together at Mass is a celebration like a wedding, a union between Jesus and us, especially when we receive the host and drink the “good wine” that has been mixed with water. There are so many messages in this reading that one can relate to. First, who would not listen to a mother when she asks or tells you to do something? Secondly, Mary is “The most pow-erful woman in the world” according to National Geographic, but to Jesus she is his mother and you listen. You might disa-gree or rebel but you listen and do it even though it might not be the right time, as Jesus said, “my hour has not yet come”. As a good son, Jesus told the servers to “Fill the jars with wa-ter.” Similarly, our young servers who serve at Mass bring the wine and water to the celebrant. Why did he choose the wed-ding of Cana to reveal his first miracle even though he had said that his hour had not come? Did he choose or, at that moment, had to rescue his family from the embarrassment of not having any more wine? I believe he did both. As peasants, they drank the weaker wine, but then Jesus turned water into “good wine”. Why was it the good wine? I believe that the goodness of that wine was because Jesus blessed it. As Christians, when we come together at Mass, it’s a celebration, a wedding when we receive the host and the wine that has been mixed with water. It’s a reminder that we as a Christian family come together in union with Jesus to celebrate our belief and the miracle of Jesus similarly as his disciples began to believe and celebrate the glo-ry of Jesus. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 17, 2016

Misericordiae Vultus DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO
