WEEKLY WISDOM

Session SevenThe New Commandment and Life in the SpiritSome of the apostles feel overwhelmed by the New Commandment Jesus gives in John 13:34…”Love one another as I have loved you.” Even though we have sinned, Jesus loves us perfectly – totally, completely, and unconditionally, not expecting anything back. How can we possibly love our neighbor as Jesus has so perfectly loved us? On our own, such a high standard of love would be impossible for us fallen sinners. But Jesus promises to send his Holy Spirit, the Counselor, who will help us do what we cannot do on our own. Jesus says the Spirit will dwell within us and help us remember Christ’s teachings and bear witness to him. Most of all, the Spirit will take what belongs to Jesus and proclaim it to us. Let’s now consider how that life in the Holy Spirit can transform our weak, fallen hearts and enable us to love one another with Christ’s love radiating through us. Throughout the week ahead, may you feel the power of the Holy Spirit working in you to reach out and love others the way He has loved us. Amen.Note: “Follow Me” Between the Masses and on Monday evenings is canceled until further notice.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 29, 2020

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”AN EASY WAY TO CONSERVE AND SAVEIt’s easy to save water, energy, soap, and time by doing the following: REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE BATH TOWEL YOU USE!What? Let me explain. First try a little experiment. Find a towel that is about 28 inches long and 18 inches wide. That gives you about 504 square inches of drying surface. (You can determine the number of square inches of a towel by multiplying its length times its width.) Now, take your bath or shower and use that towel to dry yourself. I think you will find that this size towel will dry you sufficiently. What do you think, did the smaller towel dry you sufficiently? (However, if that size doesn’t work for you, find a size that does.) Now, compare the size of that towel with the size of the bath towel you usually use. In this regard, I measured the size of a bath towel at an Embassy Suites hotel, and it was 54 inches long and 28 inches wide. That is 1512 Square inches of drying surface or 3 times the size of the towel I asked you to use. The towel you usually use may not be that big. But, for this explanation let’s assume your usual drying towel is twice as big as the size of the towel we are using for this experiment. Now, consider, if you use a towel ½ the size of what you usually use, you are cutting your towel usage in half. That is significant, because, if you are using big bath towels, I think you will find that such towels will make up about ½ of you wash load. So, if big towels make up ½ of your wash loads, using towels ½ their size will reduce your washes by ¼. That means that if you have been washing 4 loads a week, you now need wash only 3 loads a week. That one load a week is your savings for using the smaller bath towels! What does reducing your clothes washing by one load a week mean to you, to the rest of the people on Earth, and to the Earth and the environment? It means that you are putting fewer gallons of soapy water into the earth. It means you are using less of the purified water the city provides, less soap you buy at the store, and less electricity used for washing and drying the towels. When you use less water you are conserving a valuable resource of the Earth, and when you use less electricity you are helping in the fight against Climate Change. If hotels follow your example and reduce the size of their bath towels, it also means they can make more money for their owners, or they can pass the savings along to their guests – a possibility. The next time you stay at a hotel, suggest to the hotel management that they reduce the size of their bath towels for the reasons set out above. If 1000 families in a Congregation reduce the size of the bath towels they use, we will be reducing soapy water going into the environment by thousands of gallons a week. And, if hotels in the USA and 300 Million people in the USA all reduce the size of the bath towels they use, just think of all the easy savings we would have! So, please do your part and start with doing the experiment of drying with the smaller towel. Also note, that you can save even more by using the towel you dry with today as the bath mat you use tomorrow - after hanging it up to dry until your next bath or shower.

Bob Lincoln – Holy Family Environmental Ministry

The Sixth Bishop of RichmondIn 1888 Bishop John Keane resigned as Bishop of Richmond to become the President of the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. Bishop Keane appointed Fr. Augustine van de Vyver, a priest of the Diocese, former pastor in Harpers Ferry and Vicar General to be the administrator of the Diocese until a new bishop would be appointed. Van de Vyver had strong support from the clergy of the Diocese and in June 1889, Pope Leo XIII appointed him to be the Sixth Bishop of Richmond. On October 20, 1889 Van de Vyver was consecrated as Bishop by Cardinal Gibbons, Bishop John Keane and Bishop Leo Haid of North Carolina.Unlike his predecessors, Bishop van de Vyver concentrated his attention exclusively on the working of the diocese. He was less interested and involved with the issues that were dividing the American Church at that time, such as the increased “Americanization” of the Church, more openness to Protestant churches, and, despite the resistance from German immigrants, the requirement for Catholic children to speak English in both parochial and public schools. This “Americanization” which stressed the separation of Church and State in public affairs was strongly supported by Cardinal Gibbons and Bishop Keane but was viewed by Rome as “watering down” the doctrine and discipline of the Church. In 1899, Pope Leo XIII condemned what he saw as heretical elements of “Americanism.”For the most part, Bishop Van de Vyver stayed out of the fray; he was content with governing the Diocese of Richmond. He worked closely with the priests of the diocese and concerned himself with the pastoral needs of the people, especially in his outreach to African Americans. Also during his tenure as bishop he was the beneficiary of financial bequests, most notable of which was that of Thomas Ryan to build the new Cathedral (Sacred Heart) in Richmond.

2020 Annual Diocesan Appeal:Building Our Family of FaithIn honor of this landmark year for our Diocese, Bishop Knestout has announced a special Bicentennial Challenge to raise $5 million through this year’s Annual Appeal.Reaching this challenge will allow the Diocese to fund three key priorities: the education of our youth, care for our elderly poor, and support for our mission parishes. In addition, this success will flow back to all parishes and provide significant boosts to all the ministries supported by the Appeal. It is with these goals in mind that we hope our parishioners will join with us this year in making a pledge to the Appeal to help us launch our Diocese into the next 200 years.
