GO THE EXTRA MILE
Jesus tells us to do some-thing that so many find quite hard to do, that is: to love our enemies, to offer no resistance and no act of vengeance to the wicked, to forgive those who hurt us.
Have no doubt, Jesus challenges us to “go the extra mile.”
Christian writer, Corrie Ten Boom, was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Many of her family and friends died a cruel and inhumane death. She herself suffered terribly.
After the war, she traveled about Europe giving talks on forgiveness and reconciliation, urging victims of the war to forgive those who caused so much pain and death.
One night, after a talk in Munich, Germany, a man approached Corrie. Corrie recognized the man as one of the most hated guards of the concentration camp where she had been prisoner. The man held out his hand in a gesture of reconciliation. Corrie froze. She could not move. She could not lift her hand to meet this man's hand. She had too many bad memories. Emotions of hatred and anger swirled around within her.
Yet, in that moment Corrie prayed: "Jesus, I cannot forgive this man on my own. Help me with your grace."
Corrie explains that a power came from within her. Her hand lifted up and toward the other. She told this man: "I forgive you. You are my brother in Christ." And, Corrie never forgot the wave of peace and sense of freedom that swept over her.
Back in 1981, I was teaching at an all-boys high school down in New Orleans, Louisiana. I remember when the announcement came over the PA system that Pope John Paul II was shot in Rome. I could still feel the angry reaction of the boys who were my students. As we processed that tragic information, one of the boys asked: "If the Pope lives, what do you think he will do to the man who tried to kill him?"
I know I said the right words when I said: "I would hope he would forgive him."
The boys had a mild uproar, and questioned: "How could he forgive the person who tried to kill him? And I said: "Because that's what Jesus would do."
And, when Pope John Paul II did recover from his gunshot wounds, he did visit his would-be assassin in prison, and forgave him. The Pope lived out the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
So, you see, it is possible to love and forgive your enemy. But to do so you need the grace of God. Jesus calls us to “go the extra mile” and He will go with you.

A parishioner of Holy Cross is in desperate need of a kidney. If you feel you can help through your donation of a kidney, please contact the pastor. Your name and the name of the one in need will be kept confidential. Thank you.
COFFEE & DONUTS VOLUNTEERS for Febru-
ary 26th are the Burton family for the 8:00 a.m. Mass crowd, and Anthony & Jean Thomas for the 10:00 a.m. Mass crowd. Thank you for your gift of time!
PARISH NURSE NEWS. The Parish Nurses will
be taking blood pressure next Sunday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Undetected high BP can lead to heart disease and other health problems. Take advan-tage of this free service. It could save your life!
JUST FOR KIDS!
There are children’s church envelopes in a small basket at the back of the church so that you can give your own gift of treasure to God just like Mom and Dad. Pick one up as you come in to church or take a few home to bring back next Sunday. (Parents, teach your children the importance of giving back to God at an early age.)
STEWARDSHIP “Everything is a gift from God”
In today’s first reading, the Israelites are urged to love their neighbors as themselves. In the Gospel, Jesus spells out how we are to do that — to give generously to those who ask of us and not to turn our backs on those who seek to borrow.
PRO-LIFE
LOOKING FOR A NANNY
A Holy Cross Family is looking for a Nanny. Primary role is care of three children, ages 11, 9, and 4. Additional re-sponsibilities include general upkeep and support of the home and of family life. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact the current nanny at 703-732-1525 or [email protected], or the children's father at [email protected].
FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
JESUS IS CALLING YOU!
All Are Invited. Each Friday Jesus holds a special open house in our beautiful church. He invites us to spend quiet time with Him to give thanks for blessings received and to tell Him about our pressing concerns.
Please consider signing up for a half-hour or more to visit Our Lord on Fridays beginning after the All-School Mass and ending with Benediction at 4:45 p.m. Jesus would love your company! And by signing up, the Parish Office Staff will know when someone is spending time with Jesus.

PRAYER CORNER
“Gracious and Loving God, open our hearts so that we may discern your will, and trust you in the choices that we make each day. Renew our lives so that we may always reflect your love in our encounter with others. Breathe in us new life so that we may be inspired to bring comfort to the af-flicted, justice to the poor and hope to those in despair.
“May we be attentive to the needs of our Church and the communion we share. And by the strength of your Spirit, may we always be good stewards of your abundant grace. We ask this in your name. Amen.”
DONATIONS FOR CAKE MIXES & FROSTINGS are needed for the Fish Fry Cake Table. It
takes three boxes of the same mix to make one sheet cake, and three cans of
frosting per cake. Please drop off your donations in the back of the church or
at the Parish Office. Donations for eggs would also help as it requires up to three dozen per week. Please bring eggs to the Parish Office to be put in the refrigerator. We would also appreciate donations of vegetable oil. Thank you!
Proceeds from the cake sale benefit the orphanage that is home to our sponsored child, Lydia Patrick, through Children of Hope and Faith. Volunteers are also needed to bake cakes at the Parish Center and serve at the dinners. Please call Tracy Duchinsky at 721-2524 to volunteer.
Also needed: A gluten-free dessert, one item each week. If you’d like to prepare a gluten-free dessert (brownies, cookies, etc.), please call Tracy Duchinsky to let her know which week or weeks you are willing to bake for.

OUR SCHOOLS
Holy Cross School 356-9521

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK. Our school celebrated a
wonderful week, Jan. 30-Feb. 3. The students enjoyed an out-of-uniform day on Monday. Tuesday was Vocation Day. Fr. Dave and Fr. Mike talked to the students about their own priestly vocations and what it means to them. They gave the students cookies and St. John Bosco balloons too. Wednesday was our Open House. We love to share our school with family, friends, and members of our parish! "Souper Bowl" Thursday was a big hit. We collected cans of soup for St. Vincent DePaul Pantry and soup broth for Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. The students wore their favorite sports jersey. We also played board games that afternoon. We enjoyed Friday most of all. We began the day with our School Mass—a celebration of St. John Bosco's feast day. Our week ended with the annual Holy Cross Talent Show. We enjoyed talent from our Kindergarteners all the way up to our faculty/staff and Father Dave. We feel so blest to have our school. Thank you to everyone for supporting our children in their faith formation and educational growth!
