Creating a Sacred Space We feel sorrow about not being able to gather together for Mass. During this time as we con-sider the health of our community, we keep vigil together from our homes. Though we are apart for now, we recommend that we all set an intention this weekend to prepare to receive Christ into our homes so that we can worship Him there. We are excited to gather with you digitally through our livestream of the Mass on Facebook. Let us remember that the Church teaches that our families’ homes are the Domes-tic Church. “The Church is nothing other that ‘the family of God.’ From the beginning, the core of the Church was often made of those who had become believers ‘together with all their househould’.” This means that St. Charles is built up of many churches because each of your homes is a Domestic Church. So let’s make our homes sacred spaces and soon we will be back in our church building, St. Charles.

Morning Offering O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sac-rifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. Amen.

Today’s Gospel Reading John 3: 16-18

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not be-lieved in the name of the only Son of God.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Isaiah 54: 10 Though the mountains leave their place and the hills be shaken, My love shall never leave you nor my covenant of peace by shaken, says the Lord, who has mercy on you.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra-mentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there

And unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Canticle of Mary My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spir-it, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART…. The above title was a song that was recorded by Jackie DeShannon way back in the late 1960’s. For some reason the tune, which I had not heard in several years, popped into my head last week. You see, I was listening to all the bad news about the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. As you already know, Floyd was the black man who died at the hands of one police officer’s brutal and inhumane treatment after his arrest. The aftermath of this incident brought a flood of violence in cities all across the nation, in-cluding our own. Stores and buildings have been burned, including one police station. Remember, it was Dr. Martin Luther King, the head of the civil rights movement in this country who champi-oned non violent protests. He certainly would be appalled at what I saw on television the other night. The protestors have every right to be angry but not a right to destroy. America was once a nation directed by Judaeo-Christian principles. Not any longer. When freedom is equated with licence and the ability to do whatever you please, then we are in real trou-ble in this country. As Catholics and as Christians, we follow the teachings of Christ who preached love of neighbor and peace. The night Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, one of the Lord’s apostles, Peter, took a sword and began to swing it about violently. He cut off the ear of the high priests’ servant. Jesus healed the man and said to his apostles: “Those who take the sword perish by the sword.” What that means is that violence begets violence and this is what exactly is occurring as I write this article. The Christian way is different. We are called to love all people and to practice charity. That is not easy at times when mercy, compassion and kindness are considered as weaknesses. On the local scene, there was evidence of that right here on Staten Island a few weeks ago. A woman, not wearing a mask was cursed at and berated by people at a local Shoprite. Again, it was not right for her to enter a store without a mask, but the reaction was horrible and verbally violent. Christians are supposed to be like Christ, and as the song says, to “put a little love” in our hearts! Where can we discover that love? We find it, of course, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The beautiful month of June that we have now entered is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. That big red heart is always the symbol of love. But the Sacred Heart of Jesus is just a bit different. The Heart of our Lord as St. Margaret Mary described it in her revelations was pierced sur-rounded by thorns and capped with flame and cross. That heart exemplifies love in the face of ex-treme suffering. For instance, when Jesus was insulted, he did not offer an insult in return. When he was made to suffer, he did not counter with threats. Rather, the love of his compassionate heart led him to forgive those who had perpetrated terrible violence and injustice against him. In the situations of our own lives, we need to love the way Jesus did. Let’s remember that the Sacred Heart of Jesus is ever present in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament. We can come to him and ask him as God, “To put a little love in our hearts...and the world will be a better place-for you and for me-just wait and see!” Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Jerome
