“I JUST LOVE THIS GOSPEL!”Today’s Gospel never fails to remind me of Msgr. James Coffey, Seminary Rector “inmy time” — seventy-six years a priest, ninety-something at his death in 2007, very muchstill “sharp as a tack”. Long-time Seminary professor, Msgr. Coffey was foundingPastor in Plainview [1955], first Rector of our Preparatory Seminary [1958], Pastorin Bay Shore [1973]. His usually formal manner made quite surprising - startling, even! — his comment about today’s Gospel, a Risen Christ’s lake-side encounter

with the Apostles. I can still see and hear him saying, quite emotionally, “I just love this Gospel!” Thanks to him,and so many others along way, this and several other Gospel moments are among my favorites.

What’s not to love about today’s Gospel? When the Apostles first met Jesus, He took them fishing. Noaccident, then, that a Risen Christ meets them fishing once again; for at least four of them, this was theirlivelihood. Then and now, they had fished all night, and caught nothing. Then and now, the first of threeinvitations from Jesus, each of them as simple as they are profound: “Cast your net once more”.

“Cast your net once more ..”Nothing had changed! Everything had changed! The Apostles had seen the risenLord at least twice before in the Upper Room; they heard Cleophas and his companion’s breathless and breath-taking account of their walk to Emmaus, and celebrating Eucharist together. Still, they seemed a bit hesitant, abit bewildered, even anxious that things get “back to normal”. But as was said so prophetically after”9/11", “Wehave a new normal now”.

Jesus’ second invitation, “Come and eat your meal”. Nothing like freshly-caught fish, and “Just baked” bread, eaten al fresco at seaside — what Msgr. Coffey called “ that picnic break-fast”. And after breakfast, some chores nodoubt - and one task in particular. Peter’s denial ... Sooner or later, he and Jesus would have to speak of it.Apology? Explanation? What words could possibly express Peter’s remorse, explain his cowardice, describe hisregret? And so, Jesus’ third invitation, “Simon, do you love me?” Whatever Peter was trying to say, however hecould stammer out an apology, Jesus knew all about it. Jesus’ words make up for all that was lacking aboutPeter’s words, “Simon, do you love me?” And for Peter, Jesus’ third invitation, repeated three times, “Feed my lambs... Feed my sheep”. Still, Peter isn’t quite there yet, resenting however briefly Jesus asking “Do you love me? “ yet athird time - quite appropriate, since Peter had denied Jesus three times. Peter was forgiven, and heard Jesus tellhim what his future held for him.

“I just love this Gospel!” “... that picnic breakfast ...” A banquet, really — each course a smorgasbord for thoughtand prayer, second and third helpings ours for the asking. There is so much in today’s Gospel - always, anotherinvitation to feast on all that happens, and on all that is spoken. Do you have a Gospel event that you love, aspecial favorite which you especially enjoy hearing at Mass, or one which helps nurture your private prayer? Is ita moment in Jesus’ life? - His birth - a conversation with the Apostles - His time with someone like Bartimaeus,Zacchaeus, the Samaritan woman, the widow at Naim - His meals at Bethany with siblings Martha, Mary, andLazarus — some portion of His Passion — his walk to Emmaus with Cleophas and another disciple? Is it aparable whose lesson especially strikes us? A miracle whose details are particularly inspiring? Perhaps even, it istoday’s Gospel. But if it is another Gospel, or several others, I am sure that Jim Coffey won’t mind it a bit!

Blessings galore! Alleluia!
