To Find Our Lives
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A)
The Liturgy this week continues to instruct us in the elements of discipleship. We’re told that even the most humble among us have a share in the mission Christ gives to His Church.
We’re not all called to the ministry of the Apostles, or to be prophets like Elisha in today’s First Reading. But each of us is called to a holy life (see 2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:3). At Baptism our lives were joined forever to the cross of Christ, as Paul tells us in today’s Epistle. Baptized into His death, we’re to renounce sin and live for God in Christ Jesus.
We are to follow Him, each of us taking up our personal cross, as Jesus says in today’s Gospel. That doesn’t mean we will all be asked to suffer a martyr’s death. But each of us is called to self-denial, to the offering of our lives in service of God’s plan.
Jesus must be elevated to first place in our lives—above even our closest bonds of kinship and love. By Baptism, we’ve been made part of a new family—the kingdom of God, the Church. We are to proclaim that kingdom with our lives, bringing our fathers and mothers, and all men and women to live as “little ones” under the fatherhood of God and the kingship of the Holy One.
We do this by opening our hearts and homes to the service of the Lord, following the Shunnamite woman’s example in today’s First Reading. As Jesus tells us, we’re to receive others—not only prophets, but also little children, the poor and the imprisoned—as we receive Christ himself (see Matthew 18:5; 25:31–46).
As we sing in today’s Psalm, we are to testify to His favors and kindness in our lives.
We’re to hold fast to the promise—that if we have died with Christ, we shall also live, that if we lose our lives for His sake, we shall find our reward, and walk forever in His countenance.

Chris Ha on– Woburn Catholic Collabora ve Sta
How has COVID-19 impacted you?
Like many, the virus has forced me to work from home and stay with my two daughters; it’s required my two daughters to stop seeing their friends at preschool; and it has increased my concerns about my wife’s safety because she works in a hospital. As the Director of Youth and Evangeliza on, Father Leo Lynch Youth Ministry, this situa on has also forced me to rethink how to do ministry, which I essen al-ly see as rela onship building. But how do you build rela onships when you can’t be around people? So much of the Chris an faith is caught rather than taught, or to put it slightly di erently it’s taught through the rela onships we have with others.
What do you miss most about your parish?
My family is new to St. Anthony and St. Barbara parishes and we had only been a ending for three months when the shutdowns began, so for us the problem isn’t missing something that we are familiar with but missing the opportunity to become familiar.
How do you keep in touch with others?
My extended family lives in North Carolina, so we’re used to video chats. However, it has been di cult maintaining our local friendships, because they are primarily built upon in person interac ons over meals. We’ve only recently been able to invite a small group of friends over for a cookout.
How has your faith helped you?
I’ve never doubted that God is with me, and I know that he’s in control, so there is an abiding peace in my life. I am grateful that my wife and daughters are healthy, and we’re fed, clothed, and sheltered.
What words of encouragement can you o er?
A blessing of this shutdown is that it has slowed down our lives: no sports, no events, no tra c, no rush, no dinners out, no nothing, and if we’re open to it this forced simplicity can redirect us to what’s essen al. It’s made me think about how I spend my me and money, and I have discovered that I can do some things di erently and do without other things. There’s nothing wrong with ac vi es, but a life
lled with busyness and the clu er of unneeded things distracts us from what’s important: our children, our spouse, our parents, and our friends. To be honest, I hope that some things don ’t return.
