JUST IN PASSING . . . ._____ The last time the first Sunday of March fell on March 1 was in 2015; before that, all the way back to 2009. 2015 was not a leap year. Neither was 2009. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION & BENEDICTION__

In a recent letter to his priests, Cardinal Dolan asked that we schedule one or both of the Lent-en First Fridays as times set aside for devotion to the reserved Eu-charist. He proposed the simple intention of growth in holiness for the Church in New York. Because Fridays do not work well for your

pastor, we have chosen two hours THIS SUNDAY, March 8 -- from the end of the 11 AM until Bene-diction at 2 PM. The Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent, always one of the three accounts of the Trans-figuration of Our Lord, provides a perfect background for visiting Christ in His sacramental pre-sence. Some parishioners may wish to simply stay after Mass for a few moments of reflection and prayer. Others may get a bite to eat and come back or just attend the 2 PM Benediction. Perhaps there are children who have never experienced this Liturgy ? This might be a teachable moment!! The serendipitous occurence of Our Lady of Assumption parish’s Passion Play at 4 PM also offers the possibility of attending Bene-diction, having lunch nearby and following up with an afternoon at the “theater.” Danny’s Inn, Las Man-anitas, Pasta D’Oro, The Wurtsboro Diner, the Bloom-ingburg Diner and other restaurants in Bullville, Bloomingburg and Fair Oaks are all at our disposal.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND____ Another one ?!? This one is for Catholic Relief Ser-vices. Time was when many, if not most, Americans believed our prosperity and our simple humanity required us to act with generous mercy to crisies not only at home but around the globe. CRS was created to provide an avenue for American Catholics to re-spond. It is easy to become confused and even dis-missive by the various requests for support. Last month’s special collection was to provide the Holy Father with the means to respond, through the Vatican’s embassies, to human emergencies where, ordinarily, civil governments become entangled in red tape. The collection taken every November, which has gone by various titles over the years, is the American Church’s national relief agency for the needs of our own Catholic people here in the USA. In an isola-tionist climate, CRS allows us to respond to urgent needs elsewhere in the world specifically as the American Catholic faithful. We will “tithe” a percen-tage of next weekend’s Offertory to this cause. Your own donation, using the envelope in your boxed set, will help. AVE MARIA GUILD_____ Ave Maria Guild members attend Mass on Sunday, March 15. The Spring season begins with this month’s meeting. On Monday, March 16, the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 followed by the regular monthly meeting at 7 PM. On the agenda: our Spring and Summer calendar. New members are always welcome. ASH WEDNESDAY ATTENDANCE_____ It was a disappointment -- but not a surprise -- that attendance for Ash Wednesday Masses, just like that of our Sundays, trended downward. With 35 wor-shipers at the 8 AM Mass, and 85 at the 7 PM, both were five below average. The total of 120 was 15 people below average and the lowest attendance of the last five years. There were some bright spots, however. A number of families brought their children to Mass. There were some new faces in the pews. COLLECTION REPORT: FEB. 29 & MARCH 1_

MASS ATTENDANCE COLLECTION ___ 5 PM 52 $ 584.00 9 AM 95 $ 840.00 11 AM 63 $ 1,299.00 Totals 210 $ 2,723.00

There’s really no explaining the disasterously low attendance for the First Sunday of Lent -- tradition-ally a time when people return to church. In four of

the last five years -- 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2015 -- we had terrible weather. In 2018, a sunny, mild Saturday came after a mid-week nor’easter left all the area except the Village of Wurtsboro still without power on Sunday. 2015 brought us 6” of snow; and there was snow right after the 11 AM Mass in 2019. Last weekend held merely typical wintry chill and bright sunshine. The Offertory suffered apace, the second lowest in six years.
