From the Desk of Father Jonathan

The other day I caught myself complaining to one of our parishioners about the nasty month of February...."Even though it only has twenty-eight days", I told her, "it seems to be the longest month...like it never ends!" Her response was much more positive and holier than mine, "Oh, no, Fr. Jonathan", she said. "February is a great month. It means we have already made it through most of the cold months. Spring is closer to us now than it was in November!". That kind of positive perspective can change the way we experience life's challenges. This last week was rather cold, but because of what this good woman taught me, I lived the cold days with hope rather than dread. The same thing is true for more serious challenges. On one of my hospital visits this week, I brought with me three members of our high school youth group (with permission from their parents). We visited a young woman who was suffering depression. These three young people talked to her openly about their own struggles. They told her she was not alone. I watched in happy awe from just outside the hospital room as they also laughed and joked with her and listened together to their favorite songs from their phones. The young woman didn't get all better that day, but she sure was better than when we arrived. She had hope. She had perspective. As we move toward the Spring, let's not forget that just as we know that warmer weather is on its way, so also we know that God will be with us during our other hardships. We have no reason to fear; God is with us and has already won the victory.

God bless! Father Jonathan

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Sunday Gospel: (Matt 5:13-16)

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke.

Prayer

Be blessed, O most pure Virgin, for having vouchsafed to manifest your shining with life, sweetness and beauty, in the Grotto of Lourdes, saying to the child, St. Bernadette: "I am the Immaculate Conception." A thousand times we congratulate you upon your Immaculate Conception. And now, O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of mercy, Health of the sick, Refuge of sinners, Comforter of the afflicted, you know our wants, our troubles, our sufferings deign to cast upon us a look of mercy. Amen.

REFLEXIONEMOS LA PALABRA DE DIOS Evangelio del Domingo: (Mat 5, 13-16)

MI PEQUEÑA LUZ Cuando éramos niños cantábamos efusivamente la canción Mi pequeña luz (This Little Light of Mine).

MOVIMIENTO JUAN XXIII

RETIRO PARA MUJERES 17 - 19 de Febrero

Iglesia San Anselmo 685 Tinton Avenue, Bronx
