THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT So, exactly how does the Holy Spirit work in our daily lives? Well, let's see what His Word tells us. The Spirit begins His work in us when we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19) for the remission of sins, thereby receiving the gift of the Spirit (Acts 2:38). In this way we are born anew of water and the Spirit and enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3 and 5); we are baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:13); and we are raised to serve in newness of life in the Spirit (Romans 6:4 and 7:6). Thus we are washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus by the Spirit (I Corinthians 6:11), and we are saved by God according to His mercy through this washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). This is how the Spirit comes to dwell in us (Romans 8:11) and gives us life (John 6:63); therefore God has sealed us and has given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guar- antee of our inheritance (II Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 1:13 and 14). Now that we are led by the Spirit, He bears witness that we are sons of God, children of God, and joint heirs of God with Christ, having been adopted by the Father (Romans 8:14 through 17). When we live in the Spirit and walk in the comfort of the Spirit (Acts 9:31), then we have the love of God in our hearts (Romans 5:5), and we produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22 through 25). It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we have hope (Romans 15:13), strength (Ephesians 3:16), fellowship (Philippians 2:1 and 2), and unity (Ephesians 4:1 through 3). So then, we worship God in spirit and truth because God is Spirit (John 4:23 and 24), and we are the temple of God because the Spirit dwells in us (I Corinthians 3:16). Through Christ we now have access to the Father by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18), and when we pray according to the will of God, the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us as He searches our hearts (Romans 8:26 and 27). Therefore, Jesus has told us that we must hear what the Spirit says (Revelation 2:7), and we learn what the Spirit says by coming to know His Holy Scriptures (II Timothy 3:14 and 15). —Jim Crooks Church News August 16, 2020 Yucaipa Church of Christ 33981 Yucaipa Blvd. Yucaipa, CA 92399 Office: (909) 797-1919 Email: [email protected] Website: Yucaipachurchofchrist.org Services have been modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT

So, exactly how does the Holy Spirit work in our daily lives?

This is how the Spirit comes to dwell in us (Romans 8:11) and gives us life (John 6:63); therefore God has sealed us and has given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guar-antee of our inheritance (II Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 1:13 and 14).

—Jim Crooks

Spanish Congregation Brothers and Sisters please note:

Our Spanish brothers and sisters will not be meeting for Sunday service for the next two weeks as a precaution, as one of their members had been diag-nosed with Covid-19. He is now virus free and continues to self-isolate at home. He did not attend worship service last Sunday but it was decided that there would be no Sunday worship service for the next two weeks as a precau-tion.

=My Giving= Our Lord needs nothing because He possesses everything, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Psalm 24:1. It is curious that God wants gifts from those who serve and adore Him. God wants us to give to Him because He wants our spiritual service, and giving is a way of serving Him. Giving is a part of our worship and devotion as well as it is our will-ingness to sacrifice for the cause and work of His son Jesus. It is also a good measure of our relationship with Him and our obedi-ence that it is within our hearts. Jesus said: “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21). Consider these truths about our giving from God’s perspective. Giv-ing gifts of offerings to the Lord goes as far back as the sacrifices Cain and Abel. (Genesis 4:3). God called for an offering when the tabernacle was constructed; in the same manner, He instructed His people to give a tenth to Him. In the present time, our offering makes a statement about how we Christians feel about God; giving is a personal thing, however, it is also a matter of obedience and submission to His word, not a matter of convenience. Apostle Paul commanded the church at Corinth to give on the first day of the week (I Corinthians 16:1, 2), he also taught the churches of Galatia to do the same. He did not tell how much to give but he was clear saying to give out of a generous heart, not as an obliga-tion, “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully, will also reap bountifully.” (2 Corinthi-ans 9:6), meaning sowing in expectation of reaping eternal life, (Galatians 6:6-9). We are laying up treasures in heaven. As we give we have participation in every good work done by the church. The Macedonian churches were eager to participate in giv-ing for the poor and Christians in need of Jerusalem (Romans 15:26; 2 Corinthians 8:4). Giving with a generous heart means giv-ing more than one legally or morally must, this kind of giving will actually benefit the cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6). The contribution of the church belongs to God, not to a preacher or the ones who administer it, the money should be cared for in a way that it is “honorable.” “Avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us, providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men”, (2 Corinthians 8:20, 21). — Rene & Rosa Hernandez
