AUGUST 27, 2017 TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY...

12
PASTOR’S CORNER Twenty-first Sunday of the Year – Every one of us is a sinner in need of God’s mercy and grace in our lives. As hard as we try, we will fail to live as God asks us to live at one point or another, and probably many more times as well. What is truly amazing for us is that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Father has bestowed on the world His gifts of reconciliation and forgiveness. The Church, founded on the rock of Peter, is the privileged mediator of these gifts. This week, give thanks to God for these gifts by going to confession or by asking for forgiveness for someone who may be affected by your sinful choices. Ready or not…here they come! – This week we welcome back the teachers of both Saints Peter & Paul School and Saint Boniface School. The priests and deacons will be hosting a welcome back lunch for them as well as all the members of the parish staffs during this week. Please keep our teachers, and all teachers, in prayer that they may be the best witnesses of Christ for our young people as possible. The presiders’ schedule – Thank you for your patience this summer as we have been working out a presider schedule that works, given the changes occurring throughout the course of the summer. I firmly believe now we have a rotation that is going to be sustainable. Over the course of three weeks (or six on Sunday mornings at Saint Boniface), you should see Fathers Cletus, Isaiah or me. During the week, we have worked it out so that each priest has one regular day off and the flexibility to cover for one another as needed. The Transition Team reminded me frequently that we need to prepare for the future with a schedule that is sustainable over the next five to ten years. I think we have created such a schedule—it just took a while to work out how the presiders fit in to it. Rich Spring Prairie Catholic Community AUGUST 27, 2017—TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CHURCH OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL - CHURCH OF SAINT BONIFACE - CHURCH OF SAINT JAMES Words of thanks – This weekend and the past two weekends have been filled with lots of activity in the Rich Spring Prairie Catholic Community. As we know it takes the hands and talents of entire parish to pull off such great events. Thank you for your support of your parish and the other parishes in the RSPCC. While the accounts and bills may take a few weeks to get settled, these events are always successful when we come together. Thank you for making the Annual Pork Chop Feed, Boni-Fest and Quilt Bingo successes. Prayers for a safe final weekend of (academic) summer As you and your family are making plans for the Labor Day weekend, let us hold each other in prayer that all may have a safe and festive time. Funerals and Daily Masses – With three resident priests we will continue to have the regular daily Mass when a funeral is scheduled. We recognize that not everyone can attend every funeral. Patience, apologies and gratitude – I am truly grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding with me and everyone as we have been working through our transition. I certainly recognize not everything has gone as smoothly as I had hoped, and I have made several mistakes along the way. I am truly sorry for these oversights on my part. It was not an intentional statement on any one or any parish. It was simply me falling into a familiar old pattern rather than embracing the new. Like all of you, I am working hard on changing. - Pat Marrin, Celebration.org

A driver’s license – represents far more than just the legal ability to operate a motor vehicle. A license is a privilege, a responsibly and an implied promise to obey the laws of the road. As important as it is, however, it can’t start a car - you need the keys for that. By extension, while the driver’s license is a symbol of what you can and will do, the keys are a symbol of freedom, maturity and authority. As Catholics, we know well the story of Jesus giving Simon “the keys” to the Church, changing his name to Peter and promising that hell would never vanquish us. What few people know, however, is something revealed to us in the first reading this week from Isaiah. This practice of giving the keys to a prime minister has its roots in the Old Testament. Here we see Eliakim, the prime minister, being given a robe and sash along with a key to demonstrate his authority. He controls the lock which both keeps intruders out and inhabitants safely in. Note, too, that earlier in the passage we hear although Eliakim is a leader, God says, “I will summon my servant.” Saint Paul is so overwhelmed by God’s creativity and promise to save the world through Christ, he has to write about it- which he does in the second reading. The psalmist, too, praises God for His mercy, fidelity and kindness. What we see in the institution of Peter as our first Pope is the plan that God had in the making centuries and centuries prior. We see God acknowledging our need for a servant leader to bring order to the the earthly chaos, to govern us with a heart for God, and to provide His Church - His kingdom on earth equals a firm foundation of truth and mercy upon which to be built. Those keys have been passed through an unbroken chain - a key-chain century after century, insuring that all have a chance to some to experience God’s mercy through His Church here on earth!

Rich Spring Prairie Community News

Q: What financial arrangements have been made between the parishes of the Rich Spring Prairie Catholic Community?

Many people in our parishes have asked this question in a variety of forms. As we have shared with you previously, at this time the only costs that are being shared between the parishes are the salaries and benefits of the three priests. Richmond pays 30% of each priest’s salary, social security, and health insurance; Cold Spring pays 50%, and Jacobs Prairie 20%. The Diocese requires that each parish pay a fixed sum for retirement and for a car allowance.

Each parish has adopted a budget prior to the official formation of the Rich Spring Prairie Catholic Community, and this process began before the announcement was made in March. Listening to those present at the Information sessions and the members of the Parish Councils, the Transition Team made the recommendation for a shared bulletin, shared youth ministry and other ministries. However, as the budgets did not reflect this, Father Matthew decided that each parish would spend what they had budgeted and that we would monitor the financial and personnel impact each of these shared ministries incurred, and we would make adjustments in next year’s budget. So, for the coming year, each parish will be spending what they had planned to spend.

With this said, we are still working on the personnel for youth ministry. We are planning to use the monies allocated by Richmond for youth ministry salary to supplement the youth ministry program. This ministry will be a true collaborative ministry of the parishes. One of the things that I am excited about is that there is already talk about sending a group of pilgrims from RSPCC to World Youth Day in Panama in January 2019!

Justice and Charity Social Ministry Team

Friends in Faith

Join the Small Group experience!

Small Groups are where Our great big church becomes

A great small church

Small Groups discuss God's Word on a topic, and approach it through the issues and challenges of daily life. Small Groups challenge each other to pray, being authentic and committed in a safe and supportive environment journeying together. Members pray for one another, care for one another, and develop friendships as growing disciples. It is in the sharing of our faith journey with others that ultimately changes our relationship with Christ.

Small Groups are places where you will … …pray but they are not a prayer group. …read the Bible but they are not a Bible Study. …go deep but they are not a therapy group. …grow deeper in your faith with others but they are not classes. …change your relationship with Christ.

For more information contact Sherry at 685-3280 x604 or [email protected]
