The Keene Koinoia Keene Evangelical Free Church Newsletter August 2011 Pastor’s Corner  Now That Is Talent! I admit it! I am practically addicted to watching t alent shows [mainly Britain’s Got Talent and Australia’s Got Talent with a little of A merica’s Got Talent]. I love to watch the goofy things people come up with and call it “talent.” I cringe at those who think they have talent and go on stage and make a fool out of themselves. But, above all of that, I love when a person comes out and the judges write them off as a disaster until they open their mouth and pure beauty and amazing talent co me spilling forth. To watch the  judgesfaces and see their utter shock is the best! I got to thinking…what if we treated people like that? What would happen if we began to watch for the talent in people? Not just the outward, easy-to-spot talent, but the real God-given talents that so many people have. First, would our eyes be open t o it? Second, would we stand in amazement at their abilities? We talk so much about the talents that God has given us [using the parable in Matthew 25 usually] and the faithfulness that each of us need to have in using those talents for the master’s glory.  That, however, becomes so inward focus and we are much like those who think they have a certain talent but really don’t and therefore struggle through a “performance.” [In saying that, everyone has been given talents, gifts, from the Lord…it is the figur ing out what exactly it is that can take time and discernment]. Rather than being inward focused let me challenge all of us to look for the t alent in others. Most times they don’t even see the talent. On the shows, the  judges are most impressed with those who don’t even realize how good they really are. We need to be the one who says, “wow, you do that amazingly!” or “I didn’t know you had that in you…you should use that ability in such and such a way.” So on and so forth… I’ll give you an example…listening…now there is a rare talent. Next time someone really listens well to what you have to say…thank them! Trust me, I have a lot of people to thank! Go find some talent! VBS Praises and Thank YouInside Out & Upside Down on Main Street: Where Jesusmakes a difference every day was the theme for this year’sVBS Week! Each day at Main Street the kids participated in theexcitement of Sidewalk Celebration, experienced Jesus’parables at Parable Productions, created service and craftprojects at Fun Factory, enjoyed snacks and learned moreabout the Word on the Street at the Brown Bag Bistro, and

played great games at Firehouse Fitness! And, through it all, they learned that Jesus’ life and loves makes a differenceevery day!

New wacky friends at Main Street – Heidi Claire, Chef Pierremon Frère, and Justin Time – helped kids learn why MainStreet had been turned inside out and upside down. Kidsexplored and experienced stories Jesus told about everydaypeople in everyday situations. But His stories were anythingbut ordinary! Kids were challenged to retell Jesus’ stories, take a new look at what the Bible says about gratitude, compassion, forgiveness, grace ,and faithfulness, and letJesus make an amazing difference in their everyday lives.
