top. take a look around. Do you see it? Color. Color all around you, everywhere you look. this season it is the hope of every performer, director, staff, Board member and volunteer at ArtsWest, that with each of the five shows we are going to share with you this year, we bring a Splash of Color into your life. We want to remind you to look at themes, issues and personalities through a different prism and to find a new hue for each day of your life.

This season’s journey includes two plays and a musical that use the words and themes of Shakespeare to view our current world, a family classic that has been entertaining for six generations, and a modern comedy that sheds light on a problem taunting Hollywood since the talkies came to shout — if not before!

Our season opens with the World Premiere of The Taming where red and blue states collide with wit and wisdom, based on the Bard’s The Taming of the Shrew, in a way only playwright Lauren Gunderson can bring to light.

this December, ArtsWest is pleased to present Little Women the Musical, which will warm your family’s heart with the rosy pink glow of love and tradition during the holiday season.

We kick off 2014 by busting down the door of the celluloid closet when Hollywood’s golden boy comes out to play in Douglas Carter Beane’s hilarious The Little Dog Laughed. then the violet winds of March blow in a violent Shakespearean storm of plagiarism and prejudice fit for King Lear in Wendy Wasserstein’s Third.

the 2013-2014 season closes with one of the most celebrated and colorful rock musicals ever to come from the Great White Way. in honor of the 45th anniversary of the Summer of Love, ArtsWest presents HAIR the Tribal Love Rock Musical, bringing with it all the colors of the 60s, — dark and bright, psychedelic and earth toned — for a celebration of where we have come, and a view of where we still need to travel.

Our Splash of Color season will offer some familiar faces on stage — Footlight Award Winners Kody Bringman and Heather Hawkins, audience favorites troy Wageman, EmilyRose Frasca and Cindy Bradder — as well as more new faces to be introduced. Our FREE special events, ON StAGE and SUNDAY tALK BACKS, will give you a chance to talk with the cast, crew and artistic staff of each production to continue the conversation in the hope that you will view the world from a different prism. this season take time to see the colors.

See you at the show,

From the author of Exit, Pursued by a Bear! The Taming’s moral is pretty simple. It’s about listening and behaving civilly, or else: 1) the country will suffer … and 2) you might end up being exactly like those people you despise. Based on The Taming of the Shrew, this comedy takes us on a journey into a world populated by misbehaving men and American politics, pitting two ideologically opposed and intensely committed players in a game of “who comes out on top.” touching on politics, history, feminism, religion, civility and dignified discourse, as well as a lack of women in power, the show is at once hilarious and sad, radical and sensible, political and by-partisan.The Taming is really about the golden rule … isn’t that simple enough?CONTAINS: strong language, political references, scantily clad females

Brimming with all the life of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women the Musical follows the adventures of the four March sisters and the men they enchant, as they grow up in Civil War America. this exhilarating musical explores the themes of family, ambition, poverty, and, well before its time, the fight for women’s rights to work as well as publish books in their own name. this poignant and timeless classic is the perfect holiday show for the entire family.

Playwright Douglas Carter Beane reveals the true nature of Hollywood in The Little Dog Laughed. No one is exactly who they say they are. No one reveals exactly what they want, except in private and under duress. to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, each has a price but none are sure of their own value. this hilarious scathing comedy, from the author of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and As Bees in Honey Drown, sheds light on the celluloid closet once and for all… or does it?

LITTLE DOGLAUGHED By wenDy wAsserstein

Directed by peGGy GAnnon

His name is Woodson Bull iii, but you can call him third. Professor Laurie Jameson is disinclined to like his jockish, jingoistic attitude. He is, as she puts it, a walking red state. Believing that Third’s sophisticated essay on King Lear could not possibly have been written by such a specimen, Professor Jameson reports his plagiarism to the college’s Committee of Academic Standards. But is Jameson’s accusation justified? Or is she casting third as the villain in her own struggle with her relationships, her age and the increasingly polarized political environment? Wendy Wasserstein’s final play is full of questions, humor and hard-hitting evidence that neither the world of education, women’s lib, nor America has come very far in the last 100 years.

this magical adaption of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Princess and the Pea is full of side-splitting humor and wonderful songs the whole family will enjoy. in a far-off land Prince Dauntless is in search of a wife, and until he finds a woman to be his bride, no one in the land is allowed to get married. it is his mother – the devious Queen Aggravain – who is against any marriage to her son. However, time is running out for Lady Larkin and Sir Harry who are expecting a child at any time. it is a cast of zany characters, including a jester, a minstrel, and the silent King himself, who prove an unexpected visitor, Princess Winifred (nicknamed Fred), is the perfect match for the lonely Prince.
