1. WHAT IS A MUSICAL?
• A musical is a film genre in which songs are sung by the characters.
• The songs are transitioned from a narrative and dialogue to a song which advances the plot or develop the film's characters.

• The musical film was a natural development of the stage musical after the emergence of sound film technology.
• Typically, the biggest difference between film and stage musicals is the use of lavish background scenery and locations that would be impractical in a theater.

3. A BIT OF HISTORY
THE 1920s.• The musical genre became very
popular during The Great Depression and was a way to escape from hard times.
• The late 1920s was the birth of the musical films.
• The first ever film with sound was the first ever film with music; the film was “The Jazz Singer”.

THE 1940s AND 1950s.• By 1940’s and 1950’s studios had
created a smooth transition from song to dialogue.
• Musicals were now used to move the story along.
• Films of such decade were Singing in the rain, Meet me in St. Louis, The Bandwagon, an American in Paris, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

THE 1960s• The 1960’s brought the
Vietnam War and the peace movement. These global issues were reflected in the films.
• Good examples are: West Side Story (1961), Mary Poppins (1964) or The Sound of Music (1965)

THE 1970s• The musicals of the 1970s were
more realistic but at the same time were also more expensive to produce.
• The musicals of this period also reinvented itself in hopes of capturing the audiences. A notable name was who Bob Fosse gave film audiences the socially relevant and well- made Cabaret (1972)

THE 1980s AND 1990s• In the 1980’s musical had
already become a dead genre.
• It was in the animated Disney films that the musical survived the 80’s and 90’s

THE 2000s• The musical film began to rise in popularity once more,
– with new works such as Moulin Rouge!, Across the Universe, and Enchanted;
– film adaptations of stage shows, such as Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Fame, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Dreamgirls, Sweeney Todd, and Mamma Mia!;
– and even film versions of stage shows that were themselves based on non-musical films, such as The Producers, Hairspray, Reefer Madness, and Nine. Across the Universe.
