At the end of last term we said farewell to our graduating class of Year 12 2016. The hall was filled to capacity with family and friends plus all of the High School, Year 6 and Kindergarten to celebrate the end of their school years and look with anticipation to what the future holds.

This week’s newsletter is published at the same time as the first of the HSC examinations and I want to assure our Year 12 students of the prayers and good wishes of all our staff as they complete this final step of High School.

In this Year 12 Graduation edition of the newsletter we have included extracts from the Principal’s address, the school captains' speech and the response on behalf of the parents - delivered by Mrs Julie Burge. Mrs Burge is the first ex-student of William Carey to be the parent of a graduating student.

From your

High School Deputy PrincipalsA Time for Celebration. Our last term finished with great excitement as we farewelled the 2016 Year 12 graduates. The last week began with the Year 12 breakfast. This is a time where the graduates and their teachers can celebrate together the end of formal lessons for the HSC and look forward to what the future may hold for each student. The celebrations continued with the usual staff verses Year 12 soccer match. The relative merits of each side’s performances at the match will be argued over at every William Carey BBQ for years to come. Thursday of this last week then brought the families of these students and our high school community together to formally recognise the achievements of these young men and women in their Graduation Assembly. This particular cohort have faced many significant life challenges together, indeed even a number of catastrophic events during their time at school. The bonds they have developed were evident in the free flowing emotions with both tears and elation being expressed by many of our students on the day. The hall was filled to absolute capacity and the Captain’s address by Millie and Liam encouraged Year 12 (and all present) to seek God and to continue to pursue the faith to which we have been called.

A Time to Act Like a Movie Star. The Year 12 formal was held at Panorama House Bulli on the last Friday of term with all the glitz and

glamour you would expect. As with all of the graduation events, this too was a time of respectful and joyous celebration. It was particularly meaningful to see the reunion of students who had left the school (on good terms) partnering with current members of the year to join in the celebrations together on the night.

A Time of Sorrow. It is with much sorrow that I announce Alyce Campbell (graduate of William Carey in 2014) passed away on Sunday 25th September. Alyce had been battling cancer for some months. The school acknowledges and remembers with great fondness the life of Alyce, and we offer our deepest sympathy to the family and friends who mourn at this time. The funeral was held at St Paul’s in Camden and was well attended by both present and past school staff as well as a significant number of the student body and alumni. The service was a time of both sorrow and thanksgiving as we said farewell to Alyce while trusting in God for his promise of eternal life for her as his child. We were clearly reminded that “God calls his sheep by name” and that Alyce was a child of God.

Psalm 62:5-8 (NIV) reminds us, “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honour depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

From your

Primary School Deputy Principal

Term 4 is always a very busy term. When I was finalising the calendar for the term, I noted there are only two days that don’t have an activity or event of some sort. It is also the term where we farewell our Year 6 students, as they head towards high school.

MEGA DayMega day is coming up very soon. There is some information later in this Newsletter on Page 7, as well as some notes that have been sent home. There are a lot of activities planned, both inside and outside classrooms, as well as numerous opportunities to sit and eat with the children (pre-ordering essential please). I would ask people to plan ahead regarding parking, as the carparks will be very crowded. Where possible, try to limit the number of cars coming and please be patient when parking.

SportA number of students have participated in some very special sporting events recently. Anthony R. from Year 6 spent some of his holidays competing for the Metro South Soccer squad in the NSW State Titles. To even be part of this team, Anthony had to trial against over 200 other contenders. It was a wonderful experience for Anthony and he achieved some great results in the titles.

Lachlan H., also from Year 6, has just returned from Darwin, where he competed in the Swimming Nationals. Lachlan competed in at least 10 events, with results ranging from first through to fifth place. Along the way he broke numerous records in his division. Lachlan, along with Jamison J., is also competing in the PSSA Athletics Carnival and I will update you with their results next Newsletter.

It’s a Girl! For those who haven’t heard, Mrs Connellan was blessed with the safe arrival of a little girl last week - Aria Elizabeth. We praise God for this wonderful news.

UniformJust a reminder that we are again building up a pile of lost property, particularly as students take off jackets throughout the day and leave them behind. Please ensure names are on everything. Also a reminder to note which shoes and sneakers are acceptable uniform. Students wearing incorrect sneakers for sport will not be allowed to participate.

Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unploughed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12

Captain’s Graduation Speech

We have had the privilege of attending William Carey Christian School from Kindergarten to Year 12 and have had the opportunity to be a part of the ever-changing class of 2016. Over the years we watched faces come and go, but on this day, we celebrate those who have endured till the end.

13 years of schooling has ultimately come to an end on this day. The graduating class of 2016 have spent countless hours: reading, writing, thinking, talking, laughing, crying, weeping, procrastinating, but ultimately learning and growing.

Learning not only our subjects, but how to thrive in the world around us. Learning how to make friends … or be one.Learning how to fit in … or include others.Learning how to prioritise work … or cram the night before.Learning how to tie a tie, or learning the consequences of not wearing one.

And how could we forget to recognise all the efforts of our wonderful Year Advisors and Pastoral Care teachers? When Mr Jackson left us at the end of 2015, we were certainly not disadvantaged as we gained two more year advisors, Miss Morphett and Mr Hypatidis. Together with Mrs Muldoon, we could not have asked for better support. Secretly we believe Mr Jackson struggled to handle the mischievous grade that we are and had to go, so we appreciate you rising to the challenge! Mrs Muldoon, your sweet nature has always nurtured us. Miss Morphett, you have gone above and beyond to give us all support and care and Mr Hypatidis, you never fail to put a smile on our faces. To all of our loving PC teachers, we cannot thank you enough for all you have done for us over the years. We will greatly miss you.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all the book coverers, the assignment helpers, the uniform ironers, the lunch providers and camp packers. But above all, we would like to honour the permission

note readers and signers. The sheer amount of permission notes over the years is definitely something to be recognised and appreciated.

But in all seriousness, we would not be where we are today without the continuous dedication, patience and love shown by our parents and carers. Thank you for all the contributions to our education over the past decade and a bit. All credit to you.

Year 12, we want to leave you with this. There is a God who loves each one of you, and even when your soul gets tired, hard circumstances come your way, even if you let go, He will never let you fall as long as you are connected to His harness of love and salvation. The dictionary tells us that “climbers use abseiling harnesses when a cliff or slope is too steep and/or dangerous to descend without protection.” From experience we can tell you that Jesus allows you to climb places and reach dreams that are too risky or impossible without His grace. Matthew 11:28 says “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Year 12, loving Jesus isn’t about striving, it isn’t about being strong. It’s about sitting back into the trust that He will carry you through any situation - no matter how stuck or distant you get. As you face life's many challenges, we want to encourage you all that if you ever find yourself off track, all it takes is to simply let go and trust Him with your journey, and He will bring you straight back onto the plan He has for you all. Every single person in my group got down the cliff with the same harness. Year 12, it doesn't matter how afraid or courageous you are, the same grace can carry each and every one of you through your journey of life.

So on this journey of life, Class of 2016, we must remember our ABCs. No, not the English fundamentals of reading and writing our Preschool and Kindergarten teachers taught us, but the ABCs of life.

We should take the A and accept the challengeAnd B - believe in ourselves Then C - convert our thoughts into hopesAnd D - be determined to turn our hopes into dreams.

Parent ResponseMrs Julie Burge

We should E - expect some obstacles on the way upAnd F - fight, while being faithful and finish the course We should G - get God on our side And H - honour him in everything we do We should I - inspire someone else And J - take Jesus on our Journey We should K - keep on keeping on And L - be a leader.

We should M - make every day count And N - never give upWe must O - overcome our obstaclesAnd P - practice what we preachWe must Q - quit quitting

Good morning, it’s a great privilege to share the parent reflection for 2016. I began my time at William Carey in its founding year in 1984 and in 1994 I was a part of the school’s first graduating Year 12 class.

I loved my school life and even after leaving school I would talk fondly about my time at William Carey.People would often ask me, “What was it about William Carey that you loved so much?” Now, I don’t think that I could ever quite put my finger on what it was but I always answered, “I just feel like I’ve been a part of something really special.”

So when it came time to choose a high school for my daughter, there was no doubt in my mind about where I wanted her to go. I wanted her to experience what I had experienced. I wanted her

to feel loved and nurtured as I had felt – so we started her high school journey at William Carey Christian School.

Our children starting Year 7 feels like yesterday doesn’t it? It’s scary how fast the time has gone! It was all so exciting at first – new friends, new teachers, new environment… but before long it started to get rather busy. All the assignments and homework started rolling in, we were teaching our children how to study, how to prioritise their time, how to deal with relationships with their peers… and I remember thinking to myself, “This is actually really hard! However are we going to get through the next six years?”

Well thankfully we didn’t have to do it alone! I love the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, I love that idea of the family unit having a strong community of people around them- who encourage, support and pray for both the parents and the children in that family. Well, what a beautiful community William Carey has been to our families. What a wonderful support it has been to us all.

On behalf of the families of 2016, I would like to say thank you William Carey:

And R - run the race set before usWe must S - strive for truthWhile T - trusting in the Lord.

We should U - utilize our talents And V - value the time spent... At W - CCS.

X-raying our own livesWe should Y - yearn to achieve all that we canAnd Z - be zealous for what lies ahead.

Thank you,Millie Robertson and Liam Thompson.

Thank you for loving and nurturing our children.Thank you for educating them so well.Thank you for praying for them and encouraging them.Thank you for having fun with them.Thank you to all those staff members who always had their door open for our children to come and chat to them when they felt like they couldn’t talk to us.Thank you for celebrating with our families.Thank you for mourning with our families.Thank you for so beautifully counselling our children when life got messy and hard to understand. And thank you for year after year, continuing to point our children to Jesus - the one who is forever faithful, the one who can mend their brokenness, and the one in whom they can have great hope.

I mentioned at the start that when I was younger I couldn’t quite put my finger on what made William Carey so special. What I couldn’t see then, I can see so clearly now.

William Carey is special because God is here. He is working. He is changing lives and He is changing families from generation to generation. It has been an absolute privilege to watch the Lord grow His school and to see Him continually providing for its needs.

I feel so blessed to have been a part of the William Carey story and it brings me great joy that my children now share in that blessing also.

My hope and prayer for the students and families of 2016 is that you will look back fondly on your time at William Carey and that you too will feel as though you’ve been a part of something so incredibly special.
