INITIATION

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)

“Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!”

In both the First Reading and Gospel, we are presented with situations between outsiders and the inside group. Both do good works, but members of one group question Moses or Jesus about whether the other group should be allowed to continue. Moses answers in the affirmative expressing the wish that all the Lord’s people should show such zeal.

Not only does Jesus also admonish his disciple for wanting to stop the strangers doing good works in his name, he goes on to turn the criticism inward. If any part of your body holds you back from doing such good works, you should cut it off!

Shocking as those words may be, the Second Reading helps provide better context. There will come a time when what is good and what is not will be judged in the world to come. It is best not to be misled by the names of groups but to instead know what is good and everlasting now and into that time of judgment.

Lord, help us to know and do the good not just in titles and names but in how it draws us together in your love and mercy,

casting out what prevents us from becoming the good you wish.

Do you wish for God to bring out what is good and everlasting in you? If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic and celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and Communion, or if you are from a different denomination and interested in knowing more about being Catholic, please contact Jay Cuasay, Director of Christian Formation at 703-430-0811 ext. 130 or [email protected].

A word from the PAstor… What does it mean that Fr. Moretti and I are diocesan priests? Diocesan Priests are priests who instead of joining a religious community or religious order, instead choose to serve in a certain location or area, called a Diocese. The diocesan priest is responsible to do everything in our power to help the flock entrusted to our care to get to heaven. This zeal for shepherding is not unique to diocesan priests, for all priests have this essential character; but diocesan priests are called to care for souls systematically. After His resurrection from the dead and before He ascended into heaven, Jesus entrusted the care of his flock, the entirety of the world, to the hands of His Church, most specifically to St. Peter the first pope. Jesus said to Peter, “Feed my lambs … tend my sheep… feed my sheep.” (Jn 21:15-17). Every pope, from St. Peter to Pope Francis has been entrusted with the responsibility of caring spiritually for every single soul living in this world. This means that Pope Francis is responsible for doing all in his power to get 7.26 billion souls to heaven, and this is true whether he comes into contact with them or not, whether they are Catholic or not. Does that sound overwhelming? You can see why it is so important to pray for our Holy Father! We know the Pope prays and sacrifices for all these souls; but practically speaking, how does he ensure that everything possible is being done to help each of these souls to get to heaven? He divides the flock into smaller, more manageable chunks, or dioceses. Canonically, a Diocese is defined as a portion of the people in the world. Every place on the planet is part of a diocese; there are around 3,100 dioceses all over the world! For each diocese, the Holy Father designates a Bishop to be their shepherd, to be responsible for the care of every soul in his diocese. Bishop Burbidge, for example, is responsible for the souls of the 3.6 million people living in the Diocese of Arlington. Whether he comes into contact with them or not, whether they are Catholic or not, he is responsible for helping them get to heaven. You might be thinking, “That still sounds pretty overwhelming,” and you’d be right. Now you can see how important it is to pray for our bishop! To assist him in this task, the Bishop divides the diocese into parishes. Canonically a Parish is defined as a portion of the people of a diocese. The bishop entrusts a pastor with the care of every soul living within the boundaries of that parish. He is responsible for each and every soul, not just those who attend Mass or register in the parish, whether he ever comes into contact with them or not, whether they are Catholic or not. This is why parishes do outreach to the poor, marginalized, elderly, homebound, youth, etc. It is why the pastor works with ecumenical and civil groups to aid him in the service of all those living in his parish. Through this systematic division of the entire world into dioceses and parishes, the Church ensures that every single soul living on this planet has three people, who are invested in getting them to heaven; their pastor, their bishop, and the Holy Father. This shows us very clearly the real spirituality of the diocesan priest, he is called to serve in the systematic care of souls of a place, a particular portion of the people of God, to ensure that no sheep is lost, that no one is left without a shepherd, and that we together can get to heaven.
