From the Pastor’s Desk

We are celebrating the Ascension of the Lord. Forty days after his Resurrection Christ returns to the Father, culminating his work of redemption. With great longing his disciples await the coming of the Holy Spirit which will occur on the Feast of Pentecost. We are blessed to be able to experience these mysteries of our Christian faith through our participation in the Mass this weekend and next. With the grace that he pours into our hearts during the liturgy, Jesus is preparing us to receive his Holy Spirit and, ultimately, follow him to heaven at the end of our lives here on earth. On a less sublime note, two construction projects will begin at our church this week. The bathrooms in the living quarters of the convent are being renovated. This renovation is long overdue – just ask the sisters! Unfortunately it will take more than two months to complete. Please pardon the dust during this time, particularly in the west side parking lot. The other project is the installation of security cameras around the church. This will be a tremendous help in keeping us and our property safe at Christ the King. Lastly, I would like to thank all those who have already made their pledge to the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Please know how grateful I am for your generosity. If you have not yet made a pledge, I encourage you to do so. We need your help in order to reach our parish goal of $109,000. As always, if we exceed our goal, funds will return to the parish for future capital improvements. May the Lord bless you throughout the upcoming week.

Ms. Amy Bittner will be available for free legal counsel in the church vestibule this Monday, June 3, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Ms. Bittner deals primarily with issues pertaining to immigration. This is first come, first serve. Ms. Bittner also offers free legal counsel every Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center on the west side. (This event is in Spanish.)

This Friday, June 7, we will have a special opportunity for prayer with the Blessed Sacrament. From 8:00 p.m. until 10:00

p.m., we will offer prayers for immigrants and families. All are invited. Estamos celebrando la Ascensión del Señor. Cuarenta días después de su resurrección, Cristo vuelve al Padre, culminando su obra de redención. Con gran anhelo, sus discípulos esperan la venida del Espíritu Santo que ocurrirá en la fiesta de Pentecostés. Somos bendecidos al poder experimentar estos misterios de nuestra fe católica a través de nuestra participación en la misa este fin de semana y el próximo. Con la gracia que derrama en nuestros corazones durante la liturgia, Jesús nos está preparando para recibir su Espíritu Santo y, en última instancia, seguirlo al cielo al final de nuestra vida aquí en la tierra. Pasando a otra nota, dos proyectos de construcción comenzarán en nuestra iglesia esta semana. Los baños del convento estarán siendo renovados. Esta renovación ha sido muy necesaria - ¡les pueden pregunte a las hermanas! Desafortunadamente, tomará más de dos meses completarlo. Why do Catholics believe the Church is holy?

The Church is holy, not because of her individual members, but because God, who created, guides, sustains, and puri�es her, is holy. She also has the means to grow in holiness: the sacraments, the Ten Commandments, prayer,

and the virtue, charity. This holiness comes from the lives of the saints, who followed Christ faithfully and practiced heroic virtue. “The Church, then, is ‘the holy People of God,’ and her members are called ‘saints’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), 823).

The world tells us that sin doesn’t really exist and we should just try to be good people. Frankly, that isn’t enough. Sin results when we don’t follow God’s laws. Dealing with sin is uncomfortable but the consequences are eternal. God’s rules rule. While we may think we are “good” and others may look up to us, eventually God will decide if we have been what he considers “good.” Since his opinion is the one that matters, his rules rule. Sin is real. The world tells us that sin doesn’t exist but Catholics know that “sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God” (Catechism of the

Catholic Church). The law can be found in the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and in Scripture. The law says sin is real. No guilt, no

forgiveness. Unconfessed sin separates us from God. “For you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us up to our guilt” (Isaiah 64:6). Avoiding guilt means losing God’s forgiveness. The plan. Each evening,

examine the day’s actions and ask if they please God or not.

Resolve to do better and take steps to change. Seek absolution through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Then when you meet God he will say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

St. Joseph’s way In St. Joseph’s life, God found the silence he needed to be heard over the noise of a carpenter’s routine and was able to establish an immediate rapport. When God spoke, St. Joseph immediately obeyed. God will speak to us, too, in the silence of our lives.

Popular culture often refers negatively to “Catholic guilt,” implying that Catholics are weighed down by a regretful awareness of having done

wrong. Actually, guilt has a

purpose. Our conscience is like the

compass in our car, and guilt is what tells

us we’re going the wrong way. It helps us to

get back on the road—in this case, to Heaven. There’s good guilt and bad guilt. Good guilt is what someone feels if he did something he knew was wrong on purpose, i.e. if he sinned. Sin hurts our relationship with God and is harmful to us. “Healthy” guilt calls for a contrite heart and a change of behavior. For Catholics, guilt should disappear when we’re forgiven in Confession. However, guilt with no corresponding sin, or lingering guilt over confessed sins, is bad guilt. This “useless” guilt denies God’s goodness, mercy, and power to save. It also robs us of peace and joy. If you struggle with bad guilt, talk to a priest, counselor, or trusted friend for help.

June 5 - St. Boniface (754). The “Apostle of Germany,” St. Boniface was a monk dedicated to spreading the Gospel in Germany. He converted many to Christianity and restored dioceses in Bavaria, Thuringia, and Franconia. June 17 – St. Emily de Vialar (1856). Born into the French aristocracy, St. Emily used her inheritance to found a religious order—the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. They cared for the sick and started schools in Europe, Africa, and Asia. June 23 – Corpus Christi Sunday. On

this solemnity, we celebrate the transformation of the bread and wine into Jesus’ Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist. This solemnity was established by Pope Urban IV in 1264 in response to the need for a Eucharistic feast day. June 29 – SS. Peter and Paul (1st century). Peter, an ordinary �sherman made extraordinary by God’s grace, was chosen by Jesus to lead the Church. An early persecutor of the Church, Saul became the Great Apostle Paul, also transformed by grace.

The parish priest is celebrant, teacher, counselor, and �nancial manager. He works more than 60 hoursweekly, doing everything from administeringSacraments to taking out the trash, yet nine out often priests report being happy in their ministry.Our support can help them stay strong: Pray for a priest every day. Let him know, and the knowledge of your prayers will strengthen him in dif�cult times. Express appreciation. Tell your priest when something he has done or said makes a difference to you.

Send an encouraging note or e-mail, or mention it after Mass.

Wait for the facts. A priest’s visible position can attract misunderstanding. Until you have the facts, give your priest the bene�t of the doubt.

Roll up your sleeves. A priest’s job is easier if we each use our gifts in our parishes. Ask how you can help.

Attend Mass. The best way to support our priests is to attend Mass every weekend and Holy Day.

Acting in the person of Christ is the greatest job bene�t.

What is “Catholic guilt?”

This Gospel passage is all about the requirements of discipleship. The �rst man, �lled with enthusiasm, blurted out his intention to follow Jesus. Jesus reminded him that he had no home, no family, and no place to sleep. The dif�culties of having to “let go” and, if needed, “do without” to follow Christ have turned many away. For the second man in the story, the problem was priorities. Jesus called him personally, but instead, the man wanted to ful�ll his duty to his dying father �rst. Whenever God invites us to follow him, we can’t delay him. Our

duty, as disciples, is to obey. The third man wanted to say farewell to his family at home before

leaving. Jesus knew that looking back while plowing can ruin the job. He used that example to help the third man

understand that, if we are serious about

following Christ, we can’t constantly be changing our decision. We will have to make sacri�ces to follow Jesus, but he promises us that the rewards will be worth much more than anything we leave behind.

¿Es real el pecado?

¿Por qué creen los católicos que la Iglesia es santa?

La Iglesia es santa no sólo porque algunos de sus miembros lo son, sino porque Dios, que la creó, la guía, la mantiene y la puri�ca, es santo. La Iglesia dispone de los medios para crecer en santidad: los sacramentos, los Diez Mandamientos, la

oración y la virtud de la caridad. Esta santidad procede de la vida de los santos que siguieron con fe a Cristo y que practicaron la virtud con heroísmo. “La Iglesia es, pues, ‘el Pueblo santo de Dios’ y sus miembros son llamados ‘santos’” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, #823).

El mundo nos dice que el pecado no existe y que sólo tenemos que tratar de ser buenas personas. Esto no basta. El pecado se produce cuando no seguimos las leyes de Dios. Hacer frente al pecado es incómodo, pero las consecuencias son eternas. La ley de Dios es la ley. Aunque pensemos que somos “buenos” y que otros nos toman como ejemplo, es Dios quien a �nal decidirá si hemos sido “buenos”. Como lo que cuenta es su opinión, su ley es la ley. El pecado es real. El mundo nos dice que el pecado no existe, pero los católicos sabemos que el pecado es una “falta deliberada en pensamiento, palabra, obra

u omisión contraria a la ley eterna de Dios” (CIC). La ley se encuentra en los Diez Mandamientos, las Bienaventuranzas y en las Escrituras. La ley dice que el pecado es real. Sin admitir la culpa no hay perdón. El pecado no confesado nos separa de Dios. “Pues encubriste tu rostro de nosotros, y nos dejaste a merced de nuestras culpas” (Isaías 64:6). Al no reconocer la culpa perdemos el perdón de Dios. El plan. Examine cada noche

los actos del día y pregunte si agradan o no a Dios. Decídase a

mejorar y dé los pasos necesarios para cambiar. Busque la absolución mediante el sacramento de la Reconciliación. Luego, cuando se encuentre con Dios, él le dirá: “Bien, siervo bueno y �el” (Mateo 25:23).

San Juan Fisher Nacido en Beverley, Inglaterra, san Juan

Fisher fue un reconocido estudioso y obispo. Sirvió como capellán de la madre del rey Enrique VIII. La relación con la familia real se deterioró cuando san Juan denunció que el rey se divorciara de la reina Catalina y se negó a reconocer al rey Enrique como cabeza de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Fue detenido dos veces pero permaneció �el a la Iglesia católica hasta su martirio. Comparte festividad con santo Tomás Moro.

Al modo de san José En la vida de san José, Dios encontró el silencio que necesitaba para ser escuchado por encima del ruido del trabajo de un carpintero y fue capaz de establecer una inmediata relación. Cuando Dios hablaba, san José obedecía al instante. Dios nos hablará también a nosotros en el silencio de nuestras vidas.

“Si reconocemos nuestros pecados, �el y justo es él para perdonarnos los pecados y puri�carnos de toda injusticia” (1 Juan 1:9).

La cultura de masas se suele referir negativamente a la “culpa católica”, dando a entender que los católicos se sienten abrumados por su conciencia pesarosa de

haber obrado mal. Lo cierto es que la

culpa tiene una función. Nuestra

conciencia es como la brújula en nuestro auto y

la culpa es lo que nos dice que vamos por mal camino.

Nos ayuda a recuperar el rumbo en este caso hacia el Cielo. Hay culpa buena y culpa mala. La culpa buena es la que sentimos cuando hacemos algo a propósito a sabiendas de que está mal, es decir, si pecamos. El pecado daña nuestra relación con Dios y es perjudicial para nosotros. La culpa “sana” requiere que el corazón se arrepienta y que cambiemos de comportamiento. Para los católicos la culpa debería desaparecer cuando se recibe el perdón en la confesión. Sin embargo, la culpa que no se corresponde con el pecado, o seguir sintiendo culpa por los pecados ya confesados, es culpa mala. Esta culpa “inútil” niega la bondad de Dios, su misericordia y su poder para salvar. También nos quita la paz y la alegría. Si usted forceja con la culpa mala, pida ayuda a un sacerdote, a un consejero o a un amigo en quien confíe.

5 de junio – San Bonifacio (754). Conocido como el “apóstol de Alemania”, san Bonifacio fue un monje dedicado a predicar el evangelio en Alemania. Convirtió a muchos al cristianismo y restauró diócesis en Baviera, Turingia y Franconia. 17 de junio – Santa Emilia de Vialar (1856). Aristócrata francesa, santa Emilia usó el dinero de su herencia para fundar una orden religiosa, la Congregación de las Hermanas de san José de la Aparición. Cuidaban a los enfermos y fundaron escuelas en Europa, África y Asia. 23 de junio – Domingo del Corpus

Christi. En esta solemnidad celebramos la transformación del pan y el vino en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo en la Eucaristía. Esta solemnidad fue establecida por el papa Urbano IV en 1264 como respuesta a la necesidad de un día festivo dedicado a la Eucaristía. 29 de junio – Santos Pedro y Pablo (siglo I). Pedro, un humilde pescador transformado en algo extraordinario por la gracia de Dios, fue elegido por Jesús para dirigir la Iglesia. Saulo perseguía a la Iglesia en sus primeros tiempos, pero se convirtió en el gran apóstol Pablo, transformado también por la gracia.

El párroco es celebrante, maestro, consejero y director �nanciero. Trabaja más de 60 horas a la semana, ocupándose de todo desde la administración de los sacramentos hasta de sacar la basura, y a pesar de esto nueve de diez sacerdotes dicen que son felices con su labor. Nuestro apoyo puede ayudarlos a mantener su fortaleza: Rece por un sacerdote cada día. Dígaselo pues saber de sus plegarias le dará fuerza en momentos difíciles. Exprese su agradecimiento. Dígale a su párroco cuando algo que ha hecho o dicho le ha sido útil a usted.

Envíele una nota de ánimo o un correo electrónico, o mencióneselo después de la misa. Espere a conocer los hechos. La visibilidad del sacerdote

puede llevar a malentendidos. Concédale al sacerdote el bene�cio de la duda hasta que se conozcan bien todos los

hechos. Arremánguese. El trabajo del sacerdote es más fácil si cada uno usamos nuestras habilidades en nuestra parroquia. Pregúntele cómo puede ayudar.

Vaya a misa. La mejor forma de apoyar a nuestras parroquias es asistir a misa cada �n de semana y día de precepto. Actuar en la persona de Cristo es el bene�cio mayor del trabajo.

¿Qué es la “culpa católica?”

Este pasaje del evangelio expone los requisitos del discipulado. El primer hombre, lleno de entusiasmo, expresó su intención de seguir a Jesús. Jesús le recordó que no tenía hogar, familia o lugar para dormir. Las di�cultades de abandonar lo que se tiene y de prescindir de las cosas para seguir a Cristo han disuadido a muchos. Para el segundo hombre de la historia, las prioridades eran el problema. Jesús lo llamó personalmente, pero el hombre primero quería cumplir con su obligación hacia su padre moribundo. Cuando Dios nos invita a seguirlo, no podemos decirle

que espere. Nuestra obligación como discípulos es obedecer. El tercer hombre quería despedirse de

su familia antes de partir. Jesús sabía que cuando un campo se labra, mirar hacia atrás puede torcer el surco. Usó ese ejemplo, para que el tercer hombre entendiera que si de

verdad queremos seguir a Cristo, no podemos

cambiar constantemente nuestra decisión. Tendremos que hacer sacri�cios para seguir a Jesús, pero él nos promete que las recompensas valdrán mucho más que lo que dejamos atrás.
