Vol. 9 Issue 10 October 2012
We meet the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL. 34237 Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm.
Chris Randall was born and raised in Las Vegas,
Nevada, the entertainment capital of the world. His
impressive upbringing lead him to be one of the top
sleight of hand artists in the world today. He spent
his childhood on the back stages of the Las Vegas
Strip, developing a love of this craft from the
masters of Las Vegas entertainment. While most kids were playing sports and
video games, Chris was learning about Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and the history of
the legends of Las Vegas entertainment. As a teen he attended the Las Vegas
Academy of Performing Arts, majoring in Theater, Dance, and Technical
Theatre. He studied during the day, but at night he became the house magician
of the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino, or was hired for private parties or
corporate events on the Strip. After graduation he began traveling the world
with his unique brand of magic, introducing Las Vegas History with cutting edge
magic technique.
Over the next 15 years Chris brought his magic to the world. He toured
Lebanon, Egypt, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Athens, Cypress, and across the United
States appearing in review shows, on cruise ships, and television. He is also the
creator of over 50 magic effects which have been published in Magic Magazine,
MUM, the Penumbra, and released on the DVDs; Sweet, Live at the Magic
Castle, Sugar High, and Magic at the Bar. Chris presents many lectures across
the globe and has been featured at the famed Magic Castle in Hollywood. He
has also acted as a consultant to top magicians and shows including The World’s
Greatest Magic show in Las Vegas, Las Vegas Illusion in Tokyo, Japan, The Art
and Illusion Magic Festival in Athens, Greece, and The Masters of Illusion
television series on the My Network.
Chris’s creative and original sleight of hand magic has gained him the reputation
as one of magic’s rising stars.

Greetings Everyone,
Wasn't that a fantastic lecture last month?
I would like to invite you (and tell any interested magic friends) to join us at
the next meeting on Thursday, October 4th. Our meetings are a great
opportunity to either reconnect with friends or to discover for yourself just
how magical (and fun) the Ring is.
We have so much up our sleeve. Another great lecture in October. An
opportunity for you to participate in performing at our booth at the
International Chalk Festival at the end of October and beginning of November.
Teach-Ins before the monthly meetings, member performances, and even a
few magic contests thrown in. We even have an annual Flea Market and are
planning for Gala Show.
More than anything else...... we're a very special group of magicians -- who
range from beginners to professionals -- but we're all tied together in
friendship, fun and love of the art.
If you haven't been to Ring 81 meeting in a while, I invite you to re-
discover Sarasota's club for magic. If you have any questions, please feel free
to write to me at [email protected] or call me at 941-924-2754.

September saw a change in our meeting site. The place remained the same, but
we changed from meeting in the banquet room to meeting in the small chapel.
The new locale was great, making it easier to see during lectures and easier to
talk to one another . For some reason, more intimate.
The president, Gale Molovinsky, opened the meeting with a gag that suckered
many of us, or maybe just me. He claimed the microphone he was using was
donated by a member of the Ring and it didn't work. Then he threw it into a
paper bag and crushed it. Of course it was a fake, but who knew? Gale, in a
more serious mode, turned the program over to David Pitchford so that he
could perform a version of the Broken Wand Ceremony.
As many of you know, our past president, Alfred Loeffler, died recently. At
the memorial service for Al, David performed a short version of the ceremony
and repeated it at our meeting for those who could not attend the earlier
service. The wand is a symbol of mystery and since ancient times has a
personal relationship to the magician. When the magician dies, the wand is
broken never to be used again by another. The longer version is well worth
reading. The sentiments are deep but
understandable by everyone.
The largest part of the evening was
filled with the magic of Dan Garrett.
Aside from his manipulative skills and
engrossing patter, you can't take your
eyes off his perfectly groomed wax
mustache. He is a master at telling
stories that fit naturally with his magical
performance. He offered: "Forward into
the Past," "Flatworm Cards" and "Tilt for Star Trek." But most appreciated by
me was his clear explanation of how to predict the first words in a book if
given the page. I am pleased to say he made a number of sales that night as
well as increased his number of fans.

Trick of the Month. 242 Poker Deal Richard Volmer & Joshua Jay
Setup: Take deck toward yourself and pick out the following cards, the 4 Jacks, 3-7th, 3
Aces. You may substitute any other combination but they have to be 4of a kind, 3of a
kind and another 3 of a kind.
When the cards are in the hand, face up, they should be the 4 of a kind, followed by the
3 of a kind and the other 3 of a kind. Turn cards down and place on top of deck.
Performance: Explain to spectator that we will play a two handed game of poker for
which will need ten cards. Count of ten cards to the table. This reverses their order.
Pick up the ten cards. Following is the only move needed to make this trick work. It’s
Called 242 hence the title.
Using an overhand shuffle remember “242”. Deal off two cards and throw the
remainder of the cards on top. Deal off four cards and throw remainder of the cards on
top. Deal off two cards and throw remainder of the cards on top. That’s it.
Check point while learning. (Face down packet. A pair of the 3.A pair of the 4.A pair of the 3.A pair of the 4 and one of each of the 3s. Explain that no one plays with you because you always win but you are willing to
give it a try. Deal two cards to the table, face down, and instruct spectator to slide any
one of them, face down for himself. The cards in your hand are placed on top of the
remaining card. Pick up packet. Again deal out two cards and repeat the above procedure
but have him slide one of them to you. Do these same moves again with him taking the
first card and him giving you the second card.
Deal out three cards and instruct spectator to take any two for him and drop
remaining cards in hand on the one remaining. Deal out three more and instruct
spectator to select two cards for you. There is one card on the table and one in your
hand. Explain that to make things fair you will reveal these two cards. Turn them over
one at a time.
Explain that to make it even fairer the spectator can look at his cards and select
the one that would be best for his hand. You pick up the remaining card and add to your
hand.
Ask spectator to reveal his hand. It should be a fairly good one, but yours is
better. Here you emphasis that the participant
made all the choices of which cards go where. If you need further help with this effect,
ask me at the meeting and I’ll go over it
with you.

that?" ——
