Introduction
Nanowire Lasers Applications
Potential solution for a laser integrated on silicon
Nanowires act as a natural laser cavity Nanowire facets act as mirrors Nanowire itself guides light This makes a nanowire a natural Fabry-Perot Cavity
Chris Chase, EE235 3
Fabrication Process
Deposit Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) on glass substrate
Place against porous alumina membrane Anneal for 2 hrs at 250 C, where polymer melts into
holes in membrane Dissolve membrane in NaOH Resulting nanowires are generally between 250 and
350 nm in diameter and on average 6 µm in length Nanowires have a PL peak at ~460 nm, which is
similar to the bulk PL.

Waveguiding
Scale bar is 5 µm
Calculations show that ~85% of fundamental mode should be confined
