Summer is soon ending and we at
CHS hoped that everyone had an
enjoyable summer holiday.
We are excited to share with you
some exciting events – mark your
calendars for the following:
BOOK TALK WITH JOHN JUNG
2 PM, Saturday 9/14/19
Memphis Central Library
Memphis Room (4th floor)
Join John Jung, retired professor of
psychology and now “historical
ethnographer” at Benjamin F. Hooks
Central Library, 3030 Poplar, at 2:00
pm, September 14. His discussion will
focus on the Chinese immigration of
the American South with a
connection to the history of the
Chinese in Memphis. This is a great
opportunity to meet John Jung and
have him sign your book. Think
Christmas!!!
MEMPHIS MOON FESITIVAL
5-8 PM, Saturday 9/14/19
Shelby Farms Park
Visitor Center
The Greater Memphis United Chinese
Association (GMUCA) is inviting
everyone to the Moon Festival to be
held at the Visitor Center at Shelby
Farms. The view from the Visitor

Center is awe-inspiring and will offer
impressive views of the moon. Enjoy
the moon cakes, BBQ, and home-
made Chinese food – all for $10.00.
Entertainment is by the Zhou Family
Band, who has been musicians for
seven generations. Based in Anhui
Province, the band plays traditional
folk music on traditional Chinese
wind and percussion instruments.
Bring a blanket or chairs to enjoy the
Mid-Autumn Moon Festival from 5 to
8 pm on September 14, Saturday.
Free admission and free parking.
MEMPHIS CHINESE HISTORY AND
CULTURE FESTIVAL
2-5 PM, Sunday 9/15/19
Handy Park on Beale Street
Downtown Memphis
Cap off the weekend with the
Memphis Chinese History and Culture
Festival at Handy Park, Beale Street,
on September 15 beginning at 2:00 to
5:00 pm. Learn the art of knot tying
to make a bracelet or practice your
calligraphy. Other arts and crafts
activities are coloring and learning
about your Chinese horoscope – all
beginning at 2 pm followed by
performances of Tai Chi Sword
demonstration, Tai Chi Fan Dance
and the Zhou Family Band. The
Dragon Dance will lead us to the
unveiling ceremony of the historical
marker that commemorates Chop
Suey Café and the Chinese Merchants
on Beale Street. Join us for this
momentous event to pay homage to
our Chinese pioneers!
OPENING OF MUSEUM OF CHINESE
IN AMERICA
Thursday, 10/17/19
215 Centre Street, New York
MOCA – Museum of Chinese in
America – in New York invited CHS to
participate in an upcoming exhibition:
Gathering: Collecting and
Documenting Chinese American
History. There are sixteen other
participants, including the Mississippi
Delta Chinese Heritage Museum of
Cleveland, Mississippi. We submitted
posters of past events and photos of
the Lung Kong Tin Yee historical
marker, including a rubbing of the
plaque. The curator, Herb Tam, was

very complimentary on our
submissions. The opening of the
exhibition is October 17 at 215
Centre Street, NY. MOCA’s mission is
to preserve and present the history,
heritage, culture and diverse
experience of the Chinese Americans.
We are truly honored to be a part of
this exhibition.
