The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second largest event in the Chinese calendar after our New Year celebrations and I’m delighted that my third event this year, as the chair of the CFC-B is such a momentous one.

The festival encapsulates what Birmingham Chinatown is all about – family and togetherness. Despite the drastic funding cuts Birmingham City Council has made, the committee has strived to raise the necessary funds to continue the celebrations. On Friday 25th September, Southside will be bursting with life and colour with lanterns everywhere as we gather to celebrate the full moon.

This year’s festival inside the Arcadian will feature traditional Chinese entertainment including lion dancers and marital artists, as well as hosting a street food market, which will be serving up an array of Far Eastern delicacies, making it a truly family-friendly affair.

I’d like to thank everybody involved in organising the festival including my fellow committee members, The Arcadian Centre and Southside BID.

All there is left to say is that on behalf of the Chinese Festival Committee, we hope that you enjoy the festivities and continue to support us.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Chung Chow Fai Lok! 中秋快樂!

But what would a festival be without food? Street Food INC and Southside restaurants will be serving up a range of Far Eastern delicacies and other foodie surprises.

The celebrations – the city’s biggest Chinese festival after its annual new year celebrations – have been organised by the Chinese Festival Committee – Birmingham.

They will conclude at 9pm with a spectacular fireworks finale and lantern procession as onlookers view the new full moon (weather permitting of course!).

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of China’s largest traditional festivals, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar when there is a full moon.

Similar to America’s Thanksgiving, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for families to celebrate the rich harvest of fruit and crops.Families gather together to celebrate with a banquet, exchanging gifts and eating delicious moon cakes. The traditional moon cake symbolises family unity and the full moon. However, over recent years new varieties of moon cake have emerged focusing on current tastes.

Legend has it that the full moon is the return of the Moon Goddess. On this day families burn incense and place a fruit offering at temples and shrines wishing for good fortune and peace.

Ingredients

Dough4 cups of plain flour¾ cup of dried milk powder1 tablespoon of baking powder1 teaspoon of salt3 large eggs1¼ cups of sugar¾ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature1½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Filling420g lotus seed paste 1 tbsp of rose-flavoured cooking wine

Method

Step 1In one bowl, mix the flour, milk powder and salt together.

Step 2Break the eggs into another bowl. Add the sugar and beat together for up to five minutes. Pour in the melted butter and vanilla extract. Fold through all the ingredients.

Step 3Add the sifted, dry ingredients to the liquid mixture. Fold in to create a dough.

Step 4Tip the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Once smooth, the dough is ready. Roll a log shape from the dough. If possible, at this point it is helpful to let the dough sit in the refrigerator overnight as this will make it easier to work with. Cut into evenly sized rounds. There will be approximately 15 to 20 pieces.

Step 5Preheat the oven to 375c /Gas Mark 5. Prepare two baking sheets by covering them in greaseproof paper.

Step 6Press each dough piece into a three inch circle. When stretching the dough, make the edges thinner and the centre thicker.

Step 7Add the filling, pressing it into the middle of each circle. Gather the edges over to enclose the filling and pinch closed. Roll into a ball, then flatten.

Step 8Shape the cake as round as possible and use a fork or skewer to draw a design. It can be as simple as making a cross or a series of lines. If you’re feeling

creative you can draw something more elaborate.

Step 9Brush each moon cake with egg wash. Place each cake about one inch apart on a baking sheet. Once each baking sheet is filled, put them into the oven.

Step 10Bake for 30 minutes or until the moon cakes turn golden brown

Step 11Remove from the oven. Leave to cool on a wire cooling rack. Once cooled they are ready to serve.

Step 12Enjoy!

The Chinese Festival Committee – Birmingham (CFC-B) is a voluntary, non-profit making organisation dedicated to the organisation of Chinese festivities in Birmingham.

Over the past few years the flagship Chinese New Year Festival, held at The Arcadian, has become the largest celebration of its kind in the Midlands, attracting over 20,000 people throughout the day.

Following the continued success of the new year celebrations, the committee brought the first Mid-Autumn Festival to The Arcadian in 2011. The family-friendly day has continued to grow and

captivate audiences with mesmerising acrobatic and cultural performances, street food and traditional crafts.

Despite the growing success of both festivals, this year the council announced it would no longer be able to fund the Chinese New Year or Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. As a result the committee and its partner, Southside BID, are working hard to attract sponsorship and fill the funding gap to ensure the festival remains as popular in years to come.

If you are interested in supporting the committee in its fundraising campaign please visit www.cnybirmingham.org.uk

The Year of the Goat was welcomed in with true style in February as over 20,000 visitors attended celebrations in Chinatown and The Arcadian. With an intention to make the Year of the Monkey even more spectacular, the Chinese Festival Committee is hard at work planning the 2016 festival, which takes place on Sunday 7th February 2016.

Celebrations will spill out onto the streets with the surrounding Hurst Street and Inge Street lined with tantalising street food vendors and traditional market stalls selling their wares.

The main programme of events however will take place in The Arcadian where between 12.30pm – 5.00pm the space will be filled with an array of exotic colours, sounds and smells as performers entertain tens of thousands of visitors throughout the course of the day.
