Children’s Museum for Science & Technology Grand Opening Report
By: Rameen Javid August 29, 2017
Thanks to a $7,000.00 seed grant provided by a district 5450 grant, sponsored by University Hill Rotary Club in
Denver Colorado, Afghanistan has opened its first Children’s Museum for Science & Technology in August 19, 2017 in
Taimani District of the capital, Kabul. Rotarian Rameen Javid of University Hill Rotary Club, who is also the founder of
the museum, traveled to Kabul in August 2017 to inaugurate the museum. This district grant was co-sponsored by
Rotary Club of Kabul City (RCKC) with a contribution of $500. RCKC’s bank account is: Afghan United Bank,
001202USD0923738, swift code AFGUAFKAXXX (intermediately bank, Standard Charted Bank, NY acc#:
ES7802198601090096601205 Banque Marocaine Du Commerce Exterieur International, S.A. 28006 Madrid Spain
Swift BMCEESMMXXX).
District grant was approved on August 13, 2017. The Rotary Club of Kabul City held a fundraiser to help raise $500 of
its obligation on August 15, two days before grand opening on August 17, 2017. RCKC is waiting to send the money to
where ever necessary. Mr. Hamid Stanikzai is the 2017-2018 President with an email address of
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
After visiting a small children’s museum Southern California, Rameen Javid thought such a museum can be built in
Afghanistan with very little funds. The purpose of the museum is to show in practice & hands on experience, the
lessons that are learned in school by children. Children’s Museum for Science & Technology focuses on 6 areas of
science including: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy & mechanics/electronics. Science classes start
from 7th grade in Afghanistan, with physics, chemistry & biology courses as independent classes. In grades 10th & 11th
students are taught geology. Astronomy is not part of the school curriculum independently, but are thought in
physics classes to some degree. Mechanics are taught in vocational schools & universities.
The museum is housed in a 3 story 11 room 4 bathroom basement in Taimani Project of Kabul. There are two
separate companies housed. One is Soft Power Solutions (SPS) belonging to Nadima Sahar, Rameen Javi’d wife, which
is a research company. They are the official tenants of this building. The other company is called LEAD, a woman
chamber of commerce that was recently given official status by the government & will be moving out at the end of
September 2017. The basement consists of a large room plus two adjacent rooms with an area of 1205 square foot
space. The larger room is 900 square foot, while the astronomy room is 180 square foot & biology room is 125 square
foot. The three story -building has 11 rooms, including a roof & backyard.
LEGAL STATUS
The museum is legally backed by a woman owned local NGO called ESOFA (Education & Services Organization For
Afghans) which is registered with the Ministry of Economy & a three campus teacher training institute called
Daneshwaraan-e Afghan (translates as Afghan Knowledge Seekers), which is registered with the Ministry of
Education. A bank account has not been set up, but can be in 48 hours with a local bank.
Due to limited funds, the museum will be completed in three steps; however, the stages will be completed when
funding is available & does not solely rely on this timeline alone. The doors would be kept open at this stage with
skeleton staff & minimal rent. Currently, the rooms are donated by Soft Power Solutions (SPS), Rameen Javid’s wife.
TEACHING METHODS
Due to a shortage of funding, the museum offers two kinds of field trips for schools only – for the moment. The
general public are not encouraged to come largely because the museum does not have the staff and confidence to
deal with the general public as of now. This will change in the future. The two kids of field trips are:
1. Science Specific – schools choose a specific area of science or experiment (how lasers work, black holes, etc)
and the museum will set up the experiments and bring the children for that particular experiment.
2. General – schools come to see what we have already without any special focus on any field.
We have two kinds of exhibitions
1. Behind the Glass – much like a museum, students get to see some of the exhibits from behind the glass and
learn of their properties.
2. Hands on – with the guidance and supervision of the museum staff the students get to experiment with one
of the six fields of science (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy & mechanics). The museum has at
least one experiment per field that is hands on.
Behind the glass
Hands on
Our philosophy in teaching is that we do not want to replace the teachers, but to compliment the school curriculum
with hands on fun science.
SHORT & LONG TERM PLANS
Step I – 2017 (short term)
Do research
Secure seed grant, perhaps $5000 - $10,000
Purchase basic equipment
Hire basic staff
Built in space
Grand opening
Basic functionalities in place to operate
Step II – 2018 (medium term)
Secure larger grant, perhaps $50,000 - $100,000
Purchase & implement STEM program
Hire professional staff
Offer short & long term courses
Look into opening a science school (grade 7 – 12) in Kabul next to the museum – the first of its kind
Create science societies
Start science fairs
Get its own not for profit status under museum’s name
Step III – 2019 (long term)
Secure large funds of $500,000 +
Work toward an endowment
Purchase professional level technology
Hire scientists
The museum so far has invited 7 schools in the month of August (2017) to visit, each one brining 10+ member. A
Rotary sponsored all girls school & brought over 50 girls. In total, the museum has served over 150 children & adults
in 2 days of exhibitions. The museum needs advertising to attract more customers.
So far, we had some moderate media coverage. Voice of America’s Dari programming actually covered us both in
radio & TV. AlJazeera also covered us in English language but have not aired their program yet.
