The Lesson TeeAs we enter the cooler months, it is imperative to properlywarm up prior to your round. This will not only be a benefit toyour golf game, but will benefit your health and well-being.While stretching, it is very important to isolate the muscles youintend to stretch as to not pull other muscles and injure yourself. The best method to isolate muscles is to lie on your back; thiswill keep you from pull the dreaded lower back muscle. Whilelying on your back, you will be able to stretch many musclegroups including the hamstrings and the hip flexors; two veryimportant muscles relative to the golf swing.
Important: When stretching, you must hold each stretch a minimumof 15 seconds. Be sure not to bounce while stretching as thismay cause severe injury. You should allow at least 5 minutesprior to your round or practice session to effectively stretchyour muscles. Effective stretching results in more energy, endurance and more importantly, better golf shots!
Please contact Tennis & Fitness Director, Chad Anderson, at theFitness Center for more information on stretching routines.

Fitness10 Easy Ways To Make Exercise A HabitLet’s face it: it’s not all that difficult to start a fitness routine. After all, mostof us have done it more than once.
The trouble, of course, comes with sticking with it. All too often, our initialenthusiasm and energy wanes, we get distracted by other things going onin our lives, or we don’t think we’re seeing results quickly enough - and wethrow in the towel.
Yet many people do manage to hang in there, and would no sooner skiptheir regular workout than their morning shower. What’s their secret?
Here’s how the fitness faithful ranked their motivators:• Fitness • Feelings of well-being • Pep and energy • Enjoyment of the exercise • Making exercise a priority • Sleeping better • Feeling alert • Being relaxed • Weight management • Appearance So, once you have your priorities in the right place, how can you becomeone of the fitness faithful?
1. Do a variety of activities you enjoy. Having a variety of activities - weightlifting, walking, running, tennis, platform tennis, cycling - will ensure thatyou can do something regardless of the weather or time of day.
2. Commit to another person.
3. Make exercise a priority. There’s an advantage to making exercise non-negotiable. Friends and family members learn that it’s part of your identity, and give up saying things like, “Why don’t you take it easy today?”
4. Exercise first thing in the morning. Experts agree that a morning scheduleis best.
5. Or, exercise on your way home from work.
6. Exercise even when you’re “too tired.” Chances are, you’ll feel betterafter exercising.
7. Log your activity. Write down the things that are important to you. Itcould be how much time you exercise each day, how many steps you walked, how far you ran or cycled, what you weighed, etc. Some people make agame of it. You may have heard of runners calculating the miles it wouldtake to run from their homes to Boston (home of the famous marathon), figuring how far they run in an average week and setting a target date for“arriving” in Boston.
8. Be aware of all the indicators of progress. It’s great when your clothesfit better and you can lift heavier weights or work out longer without gettingexhausted. But there are a slew of other progress indicators, such as:• Getting a good night’s sleep. • Thinking more clearly. • Having more energy. • Realizing your muscles aren’t screaming after you’ve helped a friend
move furniture. • Seeing your resting heart rate drop over time. • Hearing your doctor congratulate you on improved cholesterol, blood
pressure, one density, triglycerides, and blood sugars.
9. Walk
10. Reward yourself. Experts say that making behavior changes is hard, and rewards motivate. So decide on a goal and a reward, and work towardit. You might buy yourself a video you’ve wanted after you stick to your fitnessplan for one month, or buy new walking shoes when you achieve 5,000steps a day. Do whatever works for you.
RacquetsNet Positioning - Gerri ViantPlatform Tennis Magazine - September 1999One of the most common mistakes I find at all levels of paddle is in netpositioning. Many club players play the net “your half, my half”, which leavestoo much room for their opponents to find holes and lob into spaces that forcebackhand overheads. Knowing how to correctly play the net in thirds canaid a weaker team to beating a more advanced team.

A Champion Was MadeOver the course of the 2007 summer tennis season junior tennis playerscompeted in a season long race to a championship called the junior grandprix. The three month long tournament allowed players to accumulate pointsat each event. Those points were added together from each event to determinea season winner. In the first year of the Grand Prix, we had three differentlead changes ultimately resulting in a come from behind victory by BradleyZulpo. Congratulations to Bradley on his victory and thank you to all whoparticipated.
October Fitness Center HoursMonday through Thursday 5:30 am to 9:00 pmFriday 5:30 am to 7:00 pm Saturday and Sunday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
The backhand overhead is one of the toughest shots in paddle because it is hard to controland place the ball back deep into the court. If the opponent lobs deep, it pulls you back.
Frequently you have to lunge and leap to reach the backhand overhead. The tendency is tosnap your wrist, which sends the ball fast and short in the court. That puts you off balance
and out of position for the next shot. which opens an easy shot for your opponents to attack, with you off the net!
When playing an overhead hit out of the backhand corner, (ad court), the net players shiftposition. One player covers the alley and the second player covers the middle of the court.
By playing the net in a 2:1 ratio you avoid the possibility of having to hit backhand overheads.Your team is balanced so the correct player takes the most effective overheads, and you canplace the ball where it can’t be attacked - deep in the court with controlled speed and spin.
This way you remain a balanced, controlled and ready position, with the highest percentageof court covered as a team.
