Child labor during the industrial revolution
MARTINA BROADY HISTORY
The American Revolution was a political upheaval that took place between 1765 and 1783 during
which colonists in the Thirteen American Colonies
Starting in 1765, members of American colonial society rejected the authority of the British
Parliament to tax them without colonial representatives in the government. During the
following decade, protests by colonists—known as Patriots—continued to escalate, as in the Boston
Tea Party in 1773 during which patriots destroyed a consignment of taxed tea from the Parliament-
controlled and favored East India Company
The British responded by imposing punitive laws—the Coercive Acts—on Massachusetts in 1774, following which Patriots in the other colonies rallied behind Massachusetts. In late 1774 the
Patriots set up their own alternative government to better coordinate their resistance efforts against
Great Britain, while other colonists, known as Loyalists, preferred to remain aligned to the
British Crown.

GRACE ABBOTT: Advocate for Equality during the Industrial Revolution
Grace Abbott led a life
of advocacy. She was an educator, government leader
and campaigned for equal rights for every member of society focusing much
of her work on women, children and immigrants. She was nurtured by the
Chicago-Hull House, a setting in which women were safely allowed to voice
their opinions about the restrictions to basic human rights being forced on
women and children. Justice for all children is the high ideal in a democracy-
Grace Abbott That was Abbott's foundation and philosophy for her efforts
regarding child labor. She believed
strongly in the fundamental principle that children, like any other member of
society must be protected under a government enforced set of laws. Abbott
created controversial laws that ultimately spoke volumes about her
revolutionary ideas towards human rights. Most remembered for her work on
the Children's Bureau during its prime she created many social reforms and
launched a career alongside her sister Edith Abbott as one of the greatest
women to engage in the business of
justice. She contributed her talent and passion for equality in an array of
different subjects including: women suffrage, the rights to women in industry,
prison reform, the right to safety for women during child bearing and shed
light on the evils of child labor. Her work of social justice led to the creation
of both the Keating-Owen Law and the Child Labor Tax Act. The reenactment
of Grace Abbott I have done today does very littl
e justice to the type of
woman she truly was. Intelligent, self-less, humanitarian, passionate and
fearless leader are all characteristics that can describe who Grace Abbott
truly was and how the things she fought for then, have shaped our society
today and provided us with the equality and freedom we posses.
EARLY ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, children were seen as a cheap labor source, and to help out their families financially, many children were
forced to work in factories, mines, and elsewhere, under dirty and dangerous conditions, for very low wages.
In this learning activity from SIRS Decades (free trial), discover more about the destructive impact of child labor during the 19th and early
20th centuries.
Child Labor in the U.S. and Britain during the Industrial Revolution
Its been a long day, as it is every day. Day in and day out we work. Each day is so similar. Get up, rush to work, try and find food to eat work
some more and go to sleep. Each day seems to blend into one another, as if it were one long, never ending day of misery and pain.
I’m sick.

Child labor is defined by UNICEF as "work that exceeds a minimum number
of hours, depending on the age of a child and on the type of work." This
work consists of hazardous conditions that negatively affect the health of the child. Child labor is a practice that has existed for centuries and continues to
be exercised throughout the world today. Millions of children are
employed illegally. Approximately 215 million children were working illegally in 2008. Of this massive amount, 14% of the children were under 18. Here is
a chart from UNICEF SOWC 2010, which displays the percentage of
children, that ranges in the ages 5-14, in child labour by region:

POEMS
by John Leech
It is gratifying to know that though there is much misery in the coal-mines, where the "labourers are
obliged to go on all-fours like dogs*," there is a great deal of luxury results from it. The public
mind has been a good deal shocked by very offensive representations of certain underground
operations, carried on by an inferior race of human beings, employed in working the mines, but
Punch's artist has endeavoured to do away with the disagreeable impression, by showing the very
refined and elegant result that happily results from the labours of these inferior creatures. The
works being performed wholly under ground, ought never to have been intruded on the notice of
the public. They are not intended for the light of day, and it is therefore unfair to make them the
subject of illustration. When taken in conjunction with the very pleasing picture of aristocratic ease to which they give rise, the labours in the mines
must have a very different aspect from that which some injudicious writers have endeavoured to
attach them. * Vide Mr. Horne's Report.
