Hope everyone had a relaxing spring break. You will need it because we are racing to the end of the school year! These are crazy months for PTO, too. In April, we will be carefully reviewing the staff grant requests in order to select beneficial programs, materials and equipment that support a wide variety of students. Have you seen the new
PTO Grant Program. Beautiful! We are also throwing an amazing After-Prom Party (April 20-21). After-Prom! More information can be found later in the newsletter. But we need help -- we can't do After-Prom without YOU! Email After-Prom Volunteer Coordinator, Beth Anne Simon, [email protected], to get involved.
Our next PTO meeting is Wednesday, April 3rd, at 12 noon at Canon School. We will be voting on the slate of PTO Officers for next year. Special thanks to Linda Samelson for heading the efforts to find such a great group! Our May meeting is always a potluck luncheon and, this year, will be held at the home of Melissa Coale on May 1st. We invite everyone who has been involved in any of our PTO activities this past year to come and celebrate. Please email Melissa at [email protected] for information. Our Weishaar, will be April 23rd at 9:30 am at Canon School. This is not only a chance to hear what is going on and ask questions, but also to say thanks and goodbye to Dr. Weishaar. I encourage everyone to come. Happy Spring!

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL DISTRICT 12 - Cheyenne Mountain High School Smoke Signals - April 2013
Students and Parents! Please note: Now that the winter months are upon us, there is always the possibility that school might have a 2 hour delayed start in the morning or that school may be canceled for the day. Please listen to the radio or watch a local TV station for the
decided to start school 2 hours late, that means school starts at 9:40 a.m. rather than 7:35 a.m. for 1st period, 9 a.m. for zero hour. Please allow yourself enough time to be at school at the appropriate time, taking into consideration the adverse driving conditions -- thus the 2-hour delay. We expect all students to be here at the designated start time.

I hope all is going well in your life and your health is at a premium. The time draws closer to graduation, and our seniors prepare for another transition. As the days pass and this year ends, I think of my four years at CMHS and cannot believe the time has gone so quickly. It seems like yesterday that I greeted all of the class of 2013 as freshmen, and led cheers in our first experience together. Now, we are planning for them to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. I am caught in a whirlwind of emotions--being part of this wonderful school and community has been such a blessing for me, and will most certainly be on the highlight reel of my life when things draw to a close. Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives. I hope that our students' education has been meaningful, relevant, and an excellent preparation for their future challenges. After forty plus years in this awesome business, I still remember and have contact with those with whom I crossed paths. Whenever I find time to withdraw into a quiet and solitary corner, I wonder how they fashioned their lives, and what nuggets of inspiration they used to make decisions. As I draw close to the end of this awesome career, I want to share a few thoughts that I hope our students take with them in life after they leave CMHS. -Continually take a reading on your compass, and stay on course to your True North. -or event with high standards. -Remember that preparation is paramount to meet the challenges ahead. Chance favors those who have prepared. -Live the thrill that life has in store for you. -Remember that the good news is that your life is in your hands, and the bad news is that your life is in your hands. Choose wisely, my true and trusted young friends. -comfort and convenience, but where he stands at time of challenge and controversy. In the end, we will remem-ber not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." -moral purpose, exposing the things a man chooses and those things a man avoids." -The winner in the fight between the two wolves that live within us is the one that we constantly feed. - These ideas can inspire all of us, and I hope they will endure in the hearts and minds of our students. Being at CMHS has truly been the capstone to my career. I thank you so very much for all you have meant to me and for all I have learned in my time with you and your families. What starts at CMHS changes the world. All the Very Best, John Weishaar Principal

Presents: FREE Movie Night!
Play Again
Tuesday, April 9, 6:30 pm Cheyenne Mountain H.S. Auditorium
For Parents and Students of all ages! At a time when children play more behind screens than outside, PLAY AGAIN ex-plores the changing balance between the virtual and natural worlds.
New media technologies have improved our lives in countless ways, but what are we missing when we are behind screens? How does this impact our children? PLAY AGAIN unplugs a group of media-savvy teens and takes them on their first wilderness adventure, documenting the wonder that comes from time spent in nature and inspiring action for a sustainable future. This film encourages individuals, families, schools, and communities to examine their relationships with both screen technology and nature, and inspires them to take action to reconnect children to the natural world.
Watch the Trailer! www.playagainfilm.com
Preparing Kids for Future Success
Do you wonder whether your teen is headed for success, or something else entirely? Have you asked yourself what battles are worth fighting with your teen? Or have you wondered what else you could do as a parent to be more effective? Oh, and what is being an effective parent anyway? Well, be reassured there is research that identifies the key elements we all have in our lives that help us be more effective parents and give our kids more opportunities to be successful. Corey Jones, a specialist in the area of 40 Developmental Assets, presented this topic, on parenting and helping our teens be successful. As a parent and step-parent, Corey gave credibility to his expertise and his first-hand experience when he dis-cussed and involved our CMHS parents in a very lively and interactive evening that had them laughing, sharing, and asking for more by the end of the evening.
FAN events are sponsored by the school and intended to offer CMHS parents and students topics that enrich and educate. Mark your calendar for our next program on April 9th, and come to the film, PLAY AGAIN, which champions the need to get kids away from their screens and out into the world of nature.

DEPARTMENT NEWS
Cheyenne Mountain High School Drama Dept. is proud to present
THE DIVINERS by James Leonard Jr.
April 11, 12 at 7pm and April 13 at 2pm in the Black Box Theatre
Everyone in Zion, Indiana remembers the day a stranger named C.C. Showers (Nick Scroggins) passed through town looking for work and food and ended up befriending the Layman Family. Buddy Layman (Justin Mayes) is a 14-year old boy with a fear of water due to an accident near the river that took his mother's life and nearly took his when he was only 3 years old. Buddy's father, Ferris, (John Groom) and sister, Jennie Mae, (Gabby Papa) do their best to raise the now mentally challenged boy who has the special gift for divining - finding sources of water under the earth that can be tapped for wells. C.C., a former preacher from Kentucky, is able to relate to Buddy in ways that most people aren't and the he soon finds himself as Buddy's mentor and teacher. Owner of the local dry-goods store, Norma Henshaw, (Kendall Moran) believes C.C. is the answer to her prayers despite the fact that C.C. tells her he has given up preaching. In a town where the church burned down over 10 years ago, Norma dreams of the whole town coming together for reading and reviving with C.C. leading the way. Even the skeptical
farmer's wife, Luella, (Julia Pitel) and the sassy owner of the Dine-away Cafe, Goldie, (Megan Doughty) start to see the "signs" that God is working through C.C. A series of unfortunate misunderstandings leads to a horrible tragedy that changes the
townspeople of Zion forever. This beautifully told memory play includes many laughs and charming "real-life" characters you will recognize right away. Other cast members include: Kenney Collier, Reagan Taylor, Ben Roberts, Logan Crank and Jon Miller. Technical Designers are: Will Onstott - Light Design, Michael Trione - Sound Design, and Fran Mahon - Set Design.
Tickets are $7 for students and $9 for adults.

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN EQUESTRIAN TEAM The Cheyenne Mountain Equestrian Team has concluded another amazing season. Thirteen teams are now involved in Zone 8 and competition is tight. After a 6 show season, the high school team qualified for the Zone 8 Finals at Fountain Valley School on March 9, competing against the other 5 high school teams that qualified as teams. Scottsdale and Fountain Valley went neck in neck for the 1st and 2nd places, but our CMET riders put in consistent rounds. Though we could not catch the other two teams, our CMET High School teams brought home the Third Place.... Very respectable!!! Individuals riders competed in 5 shows this season to get their zone points, and we had several of our riders make it. These girls competed against the best that the 13 Zone 8 teams could offer. Some divisions had as many as 23 riders. Kelly Ahearne brought home a 4th place. Christy Schuster, co-captain, did not place this year, but should be congratulated on her Zone qualification in the toughest, largest group. Sophie Kilroy, Mr. Kilroy's daughter, came in with a 2nd in her individual round. The Middle School team did not qualify this year, but many individual riders competed on Sunday, March 10 and did their team proud!!!! A special thanks goes to Raeghan Baker, co-captain senior, who kept the team rolling along with Christy. This was a happy season overall and Tracey Powers, coach, and sponsor, Ruth Gibson, are very proud of the team's accomplishments!!!!!
