President’s Corner Get ready for National Night Out By John Larkin President, CCoBLNA Howdy, folks! Well, we had one heck of a neighborhood parade and picnic on the 4th of July, and it’s already time to start thinking about National Night Out (NNO), which will take place Tuesday, Aug. 1. The intent of NNO is for us to get off our couches and outside to meet and greet our neighbors, create relationships, and develop an awareness of each other so that we can foster a closer-knit community. Healthy by-products are, well, getting to know your neighbors and also developing an awareness of people and situations that are out of context. Usually, members of Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, and elected officials or their representatives will drop by to chat and provide pointers on establishing effective neighborhood watches, the proper protocols for engaging APD and AFD, and local, state, and federal community services that you may find useful. In the four years Megan and I have participated, we’ve found that NNO is a great way to catch up with old friends, meet new neighbors and strengthen our little slice of Americana. So, figure out who’s hosting the event on your street (it might be you!) and start planning now. Our neighborhood association will contribute up to $50 to reimburse you for hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks, and I will be inviting APD, AFD and one or two of our elected officials to drop in and visit with us as we visit with each other. For more about NNO, see www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/nno.htm. Be safe and here’s looking to a wonderful summer for you and yours! July 4 Parade & Picnic

    Only you can prevent water waste Cherry Creek neighbors can help stop water waste this season. Austin has a water waste ordinance in effect year-round. If you see any of the violations below, please call the anonymous Water Waste Hotline at 974-2199.

    1. Failing to repair a controllable leak including a broken sprinkler head, a leaking valve, or a leaking faucet;

    2. Operating a permanently installed irrigation system with the following:• a broken head, • a poorly adjusted head that sprays pavement or

    street, or • a head that is misting due to high water

    pressure3. During irrigation:

    • allowing water to run off a property, causing a trail of at least 50 feet, or

    • allowing water to pond in the street or parking lot to a depth greater than one-quarter of an inch.

    From May to September, commercial entities are prohibited from watering from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you see a commercial property watering during these times, please call the Water Waste Hotline.

    Cherry Creek ChroniclesJuly 4 Parade & Picnic Rover & Fluff should be good neighbors

    When it comes to walking your dog, having an “I don’t give a poop” attitude can be a good thing. Some neighbors have noticed a less-than-neighborly attitude when it comes to dogs leaving “clues” in their yards while being walked. We’d like to ask everyone to be prepared to pick up after Rover. Cats, likewise, should be kept under control and not allowed to run loose. Numerous cats have been lost in Cherry Creek in recent years, some to the coyotes who inhabit the brush around us. “Fluff” will be safer if you take steps to keep her from being a snack for the pack. Of course, if you have a nighttime barker, you’ll earn the respect of your neighbors – and avoid unwanted attention from the police – if you find a way for your pet to keep the volume down, especially while you might be out of town. These recommendations are from the Town Lake Animal Center:

    • Pets should always wear collars with current identification tags and be kept safely indoors or in a securely fenced yard.

    • When outside the yard, pets should be on a leash, controlled by a responsible person!

    • Cats are best off if kept indoors or carefully supervised and/or leashed when outdoors.

    • Pets need regular veterinary care, with check-ups every year.• Dogs must have some obedience training to be good pets, and do best if they get plenty

    of exercise as well as time indoors with their human families.• Pets should be spayed or neutered. They’ll live longer, healthier lives and won’t

    accidentally add to our problem of too many cats and dogs. For more information on pet care, please visit the Town Lake Animal Center online at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/tlac/, or the Austin Humane Society at http://www.austinspca.com.
