Spiritual Thought

Isaiah 1:18Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

OEP#2 Problem Statement

Open Ended Problem #2 SupermanIndividual work only, Due 9/16/20 at beginning of class

(Don't be afraid to "Google" for reasonable assumptions; just provide references!)

Kryptonian Data CrystalsThe Citizens of Krypton had some amazing technology, despite their dying planet. In fact, they were able to store petabytes of data on the tiniest of crystals, thus allowing the parents of superman to send him a loving reminder of who he was and what Krypton was all about. In essence these crystals work because they formed a crystal lattice of an unknown metal (similar to iron, but it’s transparent in crystal form), and the data was stored in the atoms themselves for this crystal lattice. Considering that the Kryptonian crystals use the highest possible atomic packing fraction and atoms per unit cell in their crystal makeup, what is the crystal structure of this material? What is the vector of the highest linear atom density? What is the density of this crystal material?

So what

• When you sinter a ceramic, you have pores, which make it less dense

• You can compare manufactured density to theoretical density for process quality

Crystallographic planes are typically identified with which of the following:

A. Direction indicesB. Planar DirectionsC. Miller Indices

17

18

Crystallographic Planes

• Miller Indices: Reciprocals of the (three) axial intercepts for a plane, cleared of fractions & common multiples. All parallel planes have same Miller indices.

• Algorithm1. Read off intercepts of plane with axes in

terms of a, b, c2. Take reciprocals of intercepts3. Reduce to smallest integer values4. Enclose in parentheses, no commas i.e., (hkl)
