Ask the PharmacistQ: Do antidepressant drugs cause weight gain?

A: Most antidepressants and mood

stabilizers do have weight gain as a side effect,

although this may not occur at the beginning

of use.

Bupropion (Alpenzin, Wellbutrin and

Zyban) can act as an appetite suppressant and

may have less of a weight gain than oth

types of antidepressants.

Within all anti-depressant classes (refer to

prior publications of The Tablet), there are

varying degrees of weight gain associated with

different drugs. The patient should discuss the

options with their prescribing physician

psychiatrist and let him/her know that weight

gain is an important concern.

Patients who have experienced weight

gain due to antidepressant use should have

regular medical check

diabetes and cholesterol elevations, which

may be the result of the weight gain.
